And who are they fooling? A divorced woman is supposed to become financially independent by the time iddat period is over ! What about the educational background? About emotional trauma? I don't support the concept of maintenance. When both the partners decided to end the relationship, why should a partner pay for the other. You don't want to live together, you don't want to be married but you just need the money from husband ? That's nonsense and the laws of this country should be changed.

Muslims should treat this as an isolated case and not protest against the judgement. The protests have only exacerbated the problems faced by Muslims and inadvertently aided their rivals. Muslims are free to adhere to Islamic laws in their personal matters (99.99% doing so). Those who choose not to follow Islamic laws have the option to seek resolution through the courts. In such cases, both parties should respect the rulings of the judiciary. Importantly, accepting the verdict will prevents political parties from exploiting the situation.
