EDIT: Had some audio issues right before the interview, so the audio spikes got adjusted as the interview was rolling to avoid wasting time. CW will be joining me for a coffee talk in a near future on stream which I'm looking forward to very much! This goes to show how much CW cares about the game and how this is not a PR stunt by them, we made sure to ask questions a majority of the community told us they NEEDED asked. I hope we have provided you with a fruitful podcast/discussion surrounding a lot of problems.

With respect to the work and effort you put in to PoE much appreciated but I'd like to know when you say Majority of the community wanted "x" questions asked then I'd counter this statement with you mean a small minority ? I haven't seen 2+ million complaints or questions being posed to yourself or other streamers. I'm going out on a limb here as I said in an earlier comment .. in my opinion you represent mostly elite level players who have gripes. The Average casual player just accepts the game for what it is and enjoys it. Keep up the great work Ghazzy 👍

@@sandosando3014 Bruh, why are you being contrarian? Its 2021, shit is cringe. He said the majority of the community, as in, everyone who actually communicates about the game. And yes, those opinions are readily available whether it be reddit, twitter, forums, or the hundreds of thousands of viewers who watch streams. There is a TON of feedback to pull from. And while it may not be the majority playerbase, it is the majority of the community that actively discusses the game, who the majority player base probably share the same of opinion of, but just choose to be quiet. Its called statistics. Do you think companies who do statistics get every single person in the world to answer before they come up with a logical conclusion that the majority supports this or that? What a dumb fuck needless comment.

Ghazzy, thanks to you & Grimro & Tuna, for getting this interview with CW. I'd like to see a follow up video from you, more or less analyzing the responses and what your take-aways are, such as, "I feel good/hopeful about response to question X" or whatever. You did this with the Ziz/Mathil interview, and I enjoyed that because it was an honest review of it from your point of view. As mentioned below, we all have opinions, and while I'm not an elite player (more of a "git gud" player, honestly), and while I don't always agree with your opinions, I do like hearing them. Thanks for the vid, and I hope you add more to this one, so to speak.

@alexshindy7274

@@Rahkesh357 My suggestion for a solution is this - To make self crafting items for the casual player easy, accessible, affordable, so you can have deterministic crafting for your average Joe so they can create not OP, not broken, not great items, but still be able to create items specific for their build - simply limit the power of this crafting. Allow high level crafting for 6 tier 1 mods to be RNG / slam/pray, whatever it is. But allow deterministic crafting of tier 3-tier5 mods. So let's say you can't guarantee boots with T1-2 life, movespeed, triple resistance. But allow the guarantee of T3 life, T2 movespeed, T3 triple res. like you see what i mean, as in. Make it so the top power items are not deterministic. But give options for being able to deterministically craft medium power items. This would also be a godsend for SSF SC, and SSF HC players. Myself I have played before in Standard SC, in Trade SC, and in SSF HC, and about 5,000 hours played, for reference. I'm not a pro, but I am generally experienced. I bet I am not the only person out there who likes to play trade league, but craft items for themselves. I don't need perfect items to be happy. Perfect items are a thing to chase, but I would like to be able ot reliably get good items, that will allow me to complete all content with investment. Cheers exiles!

@alexshindy7274
@alexshindy7274 3 года назад
@@Rahkesh357 Deterministic crafting of 6 Tier 1 items is what full power harvest crafting allowed you to do and i agree this is too strong. What i would like to be able to do is Alt/Aug + Regal spam until you get T1/T1/T2 on 3 mods, or even T1/T1, then multi mod and craft on T3/T3/T3, or that + slam last one, and then look for 30 quality from betrayal mechanic, or catalysts if it's jewelerly whatever. But because multimod is 2 ex, usually the base for the craft is between 10c and 1ex, and usually getting T1/T1/T2 on the alt aug regal with results that you want, will be around 2,000 alterations or so. The item ends up costing you around 5ex on average. Which i guess is fine? Except even with this basic crafting method you can still get unlucky. So why even try, when you can just search for an item for 5ex that's probably better than what you would have crafted? In my view deterministic crafting is more about getting 5-6 mods that you want, at relatively good levels. Not perfect levels. As opposed to getting 3 mods that you want at perfect levels, and then 3 mods that are bad. Like there are so many items up for trade right now that are simply 2 influence items, with 2 perfect mods, and then complete trash on the remaining 4 mods. And they're selling for 2-6ex, simply because of the price of crafting it. Even though the item is garbage. If you really want those mods I guess. Then you try to make up for the deficiency in your other gear. Similar to how you do with unique items.

The main problem is the game designers refuse to address RMT. None of that really matters if you play the game for 6 hours and if you are super lucky you might see 6 exalted orb. Right now exalted orders are 40 cents on the dollar I can work a minimum wage job for half of A-day and see over 80 exalted orbs or I could literally farm the game for 4 hours see a couple log books maybe find 2 ex and that will be the best it gets. If GGG really wants to change stuff they would change the way bots farm stuff. The fact a level 25 player with 0 challenges 0 achievements, 0 mtx etc. Can Spam full paragraphs for days on end I think that goes to show RMT is the main way to upgrade your gear in this game. Why else would you farm for 10 hours when you could literally go to your job and see over 160 exalts. How else are level 24 people 0 challenge 0 micro transaction 0 achievement people spamming full paragraphs in global chat for 40 cents an exalted orb all day. This game is supposed to be all about grinding but when the grind isn't worth it player retention looks like it does now a cliff. If you want people to start taking your game seriously make it more fun to play and make paying to win not an option or at least don't make it more efficient than actually playing your game.

My biggest problem right now is the item progression. There is a huge gap in terms of power level within yellow tier maps. What i mean by this is the following: The item progression has to be possible to be met during each stage of the game. Within the campaign, it is quite achievable to manage resistances, damage and life pool to advance further. It is also achievable to use act 9 and 10 to prepare oneself to early mapping. As you mentioned, you can farm tabula, the first 6link deterministically. White maps can be used to optimize the items to be able to run yellow maps, by finding, crafting or selling/buying fitting "normal" rare items or build enabling cheap uniques. Imo the achievable powerlevels of items should be in contrast of the powerlevel of the content you will step into next. Here, the transition from yellow maps and red maps are the hardest. Items you need to be able to run yellow tier maps are currently valued at like... 10c-50c, which is really achievable with the loot of white tier maps, which makes progressing to yellow tier maps possible for casual players. From this point however, there is a massive gap. First of all, yellow tier maps do not give you much higher powerlevel of items than white tier maps. Even influenced items are basically trash at this level, since most good influence mods are gated by high item levels. That means, while you can optimize your items from white to yellow tier maps, you cannot really optimize them any further up until high red tier maps. Especially in hard core, this makes the transition from yellow to red tier maps quite tedious, espeically since even the bases are incredibly expensive. Example: You play spectre. You cap your resistances, you get some minion damage mods here and there, yadda yadda. You can easily run yellow tier maps now. It costed you around 150c (super achievable with a bit of time). Your next upgrade would be a lvl 86 influenced bonehelmet. Nice. Now i have to farm 25 exalts to get THE BASE and use a shit of other currencies to actually craft it and make it possible to wear it. That means, to progress towards red tier maps, i need drops that are gated by red tier maps. Yes, i can get lucky and drop several exalts worth of unique items or div cards and literally buy it. But that just feels meh. It would be so much better when for example specific influence mods can be achieved at yellow map tier item level but are limited to 1 of the strong mods. The difference of item powerlevels of yellow and red tier maps are imo too big. In SC it feels like you basically have to drop enough "corpses" against the content until you get to late red maps to get the juicy items to be able to actually itemize accordingly and itemize your next character. In HC it just feels like a empty gab where you either play juggernaut build or get lucky to get there.
@j.d.6915

@pa7764 3 года назад
I disagree that you need a ilvl 86 Elder Bone Helmet (or other gear of that level of perfection) to start farming high red tiet maps - that's the cherry on top, much, much later. It's the most economical route, yes, to go from very basic mapping gear to perfection saves you much mid-tier crafting, which saves currency and time, but that is not required. People kill Awakener with 500k dps in HC races.
@fumeknight2354
@fumeknight2354 3 года назад
@@pa7764 precisely what I said in another comment myself. Yes it can take longer and you will need to do mechanics again and again but it is doable and you do not need all that fancy gear to clear content. Some builds require high investment to function but that's why we get league starter builds and more endgame builds. I don't see why this is suddenly such a big deal. Could the progression be better/smoother? Absolutely yes. Is it as bad as people make it? I don't believe so.
@goobypls5732
@goobypls5732 3 года назад
@@pa7764 I have absolutely nothing against the stage of powerlevel of bosses. Imho bosses should be the hard but potentially be doable with player skills on low end gear. Thats super fine. However, consistent mapping without dying is at the moment bound to killing the enemy as fast as possible, as defense is not in a good spot right now. Means, if you go up to higher map tiers, there is a threshold where you all of a sudden need several seconds to kill packs exposing yourself to a clusterfuck of projectiles that can instagib you at any time and are basically undodgeable at the current stage. What do you mean with mid tier crafts? That is exactly what my comment is about. In fact, the lacking possibilities of mid tier crafts. Once you are done getting ressistances, socket and links, a few jewels here and there yadda yadda that's basically it. If you want to upgrade f.e. your helmet from this stage, there is no in between that and lvl 86 pseudo-gem helmets. Influenced helmets ilvl 77 are basically trash and have no mods worth crafting. You "upgrade" your trash campaign level helmet to a affordable 40c, just to notice that your next step in helmet progression just jumped in price to 20+ ex for the base alone. That's why i propose buffing the mods of influenced lower tier items to fill that spot.

I really think dropping low tier modifiers appearing on higher level items would go a long way to make crafting/gearing feel a lot more progressive and it would be a really simple help/fix to this problem you were discussing @ 40-60min. It would also free up slots to introduce new modifiers without diluting the pool. GGG should make a table of all the available modifiers at every item level and take a long good look at how they should make that progress.

I agree. I also wish they removed a lot of modifiers that are really just there to dilute possible roll, like resistances on weapons.. just why. And maybe put mod tiers on a bell curve. So for example an ilvl 83 item would be much less likely to roll low tier mods than an ilvl 10, but the curve would drop off at tier 1 or maybe even 2 modifiers, so those are still rare and valuable. That way we could get a lot more items with mid range useful rolls, and really good items would still be difficult to acquire.

This is why player retention is garbage nobody wants to play a game where you can either grind for 30 hours or put $30 on your mom's credit card and literally be 60 hours of progress into the game. Look at the exalted prices on trading websites why would you want to farm a game for 10 hours and maybe see 5 exalted if you are lucky or you could work make $80 literally buy 160 exalted orbs. Craft branding: Items could track player names who have been involved in the item's current state. So it could have the name for who acquired the initial item (the first person to have it in their inventory), and everyone who used the craft item which added the mod or influence or similar that's currently on the item. Maybe even having a key held that pops up an extra tooltip which lists the contributing player for each of the item's current mods and similar individually. And then you could maybe have the mtx ghazzy proposed, to gild your name on it, so it pops out more among the names, or if all the names in the list are yours, it makes it that much more impressive and noticeable.

On the point of nuisance vs challenge. The actual thing that Chris is trying to implement is probably more akin to a deterrent. He wants to discourage certain actions or certain things by making it more annoying, tedious, or difficult to do. The fact that you continue to do that thing is just your choice to do the annoying. What you should be doing is finding a way to approach the situation that doesn't require you to do the now annoying thing. Like the scenario with moving the spawn point further away from bosses. That is clearly an attempt to deter zerging. If you change your playstyle and try not to die repeatedly, the change should not be a significant addition in nuisance at all. However, if you continue to try zerging the boss, you'll inevitably find it very annoying to do now. Making things annoying but not impossible goes with the other part of the Chris's philosophy of not telling players explicitly what to do by specifying what you can or cannot do. It's not impossible to zerg, it's just discouraged to do so. Basically, most things that players perceive as a nuisance is just something that GGG is trying to tell you to not do or do another way without outright stopping you from doing what you've decided to do. The reason Chris poses most of these nuisance additions as challenges is because the way GGG is steering you towards playing is going to be harder. So you either do something that is harder, or you do something that is easier but annoying. And the hope is that you'll try the harder way when you get annoyed enough with the easy way. Obviously, we can have all sorts of psychological discussions about whether or not this manner of suggestion/deterrence is ultimately effective or simply destructive, but first the community needs to understand that the game is not obligated to support the way you are currently playing the game, and thus, when you encounter something annoying, it's probably best to look for alternatives first before complaining.

This 100%, think of all the people who have no clue about how rare headhunters are/items that equivalent. If your on a heist and have no clue that one of the items offered in a grand heist was worth 1000 times more then what you would have picked up feels incredibly bad to the point that new players feel they have to check pricing on every unique that drops (thank goodness for awakened POE trade). But the main barrier to that is the inability to target craft. In trade league, if i were to throw fossils on an item, i might by RNG hit something good but my build cant use it. I can always sell it and recoup my currency to continue crafting what i need. In SSF, i would be stuck crafting again and again to hit a good item that i can use. If there are 10 good outcomes but i only need 1 of them, i hit 1 in trade league and i am done. In SSF, i might need to hit all 10 or more cause you can get dupes. @@brojakmate9872 But dark souls is rewarding and respects time spent much more than poe. Also its easier to understand and master. In PoE the feeling of exploration is overshadowed by the need to get better gear and reach certain numbers in both offence and defence because otherwise you literally cant progress. The only way is to either be lucky or put in the hours. Skill and game knowledge is not enough to succeed in PoE the same way it is in Dark souls.

About the Name of the crafter: I disagree that the name tag would add in-game value. In D2 Anya as a quest reward would personalize (add name tag to one) of your items. I loved it as long qw I used the item but I would try to avoid buying an item with someone else's name. I would only trade for it if I had no other choice. I expect that tags would normally make the item less valuable just because we would not like to carry someone else's name. Only the name tag of a very famous player (not sure if anyone qualifies. very few streamers if any) would actually add in-game value to the item.

An idea for chris about the "MTX that allows you to count your kills on your item" or something: Buy ins into leaderboards are lame. What is pretty cool however is progressing visual effects. Example: You have a MTX for a weapon or a skill that starts off with "0 kills" and for example the visual effect being toned down or just white and progresses after an x amount of kills to become more fleshy or a different color. Like more goory red considering your weapon is full of blood of the killed enemies or something. Removing the MTX from the gem would reset the kill count and therefore reset the color scheme / flashiness of it. This would maybe even sensitize some players to buy the same MTX several times since they want the character of the last league not to lose the maxed out effect of the MTX. I feel that would be a much cooler approach then a buy in into a leaderboard.

Alright, questions for someone to ask if there's another chance in the future since we need to tie EVERYTHING back to MTG apparently: 1) If people don't want to show off/get a sense of accomplishment from something incrementally built, why is Chris collecting lands? What does he feel differentiates his lands from items in PoE? 2) If Chris had to stake his collection of lands (or build a similar collection of lands from zero) every time he wanted to get more lands, would he do it, or would he find something else to collect? Or would he just stop after a while? For clarity, I'm of the opinion that pre-nerf harvest was way, way, way too strong and post-nerf it's probably too weak in terms of crafting (in terms of boring trades, it's still probably too strong) but that there's a LOT of room for a middle ground.

Yeah I had to stop and think for a moment after hearing "we shouldn't have made flasks auto-refill when you go to town, we should have forced you to go talk to a vendor first." Like even if you believe that people really are spending portal scrolls (and therefore lives, since mapping is the only content where you'd need to worry about flask charges that much) to 'cheese' flasks, as he implied, like. What would this accomplish? Great, now it takes like five more seconds every time you get into town to 'cheese' it; very cool, Chris Wilson. At least the Kaom fight example invokes corpse-cannoning, something that, like... Is technically cheese, even though I can't think of any reason anyone sane would care. Like it really does seem like he just doesn't get that 'friction,' on its own, doesn't add anything to the game? His example for friction that exists in the game currently is, uh, ctrl+clicking items into the stash--but ctrl+clicking is already a more 'frictionless' way of moving things in (as opposed to having to manually click+drag). And on top of that, the last time I played before this current binge I'm on, there were no stash tab affinities--clearly _someone_ in a position of design authority thought it was a good idea to reduce the friction of having to manually ctrl+click everything in. And the game is better for it as a consequence. You still get to appreciate your haul of loot, but you can now get back into the actual game faster. (Also very funny that Wilson spent like two minutes talking about how people are cheesing Kaom by, uh, respawning at the checkpoint, and how the reasonable thing to do in that situation is to move the checkpoint further away, and the immediate response is "couldn't you just make Kaom's health reset if this is a probem?" Like I understand why Ghazzy moved it on after that but damn I kinda wish he hadn't.)

Ive spent some time ruminating on that dynamic, and I feel Chris is correct but chose a bad example. I honestly feel a good example is actually the "WEIGHT" meme. Item weight is a real thing that I find does make good and fun items feel better when theres a bit of annoyance in having picked up a hundred mediocre or bad items beforehand. There really should be a level of nuisance to a game. Now, discussing the line of acceptability (like you're currently doing) is definitely very important and healthy and I of course fully support it. I worry only for the polarized response the idea of intentional nuisance will likely spark in our community.

@@dagowow I don't think anybody here is talking about hard mode... let's take a look at the mana changes in 3.15, as melee char at league start I was out of flasks and out of mana, in a fight vs brutus I had to die in order to replenish flasks + mana, because the alternative was run away and wait for it to regenerate (on melee char basically forever, why melee need so much mana is another story). Nothing is hard about that fight, but it became annoying and irritating AF. Almost quit the league right there at brutus on day 1. The balance is important, running to NPC to recharge flasks is beyond good and evil. Clicking 10 million fragments is annoying not hard, now Sirus fight is hard, you have to learn things and timing and have adequate power. Same with randomness, it is important to the game, but when everything is random, its just absolute crap. Doesn't make the game enjoyable, changes to loot that became droppable anywhere made the game less fun, changes to harvest after ritual made the game less fun, changes to mana multiplier and flasks made the game less fun, gutted very end-game made the game drastically less fun, in a nutshell the game is basically annoying and irritating to play (in 3.15), while recently it was amazing and fun (in 3.13) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel everyone misunderstands one of the biggest issues in trade league, as it relates to Harvest and "upgrading one piece of gear". People like me burn 50 crafts to get one perfect. I then saturate the market with items I don't need, that are WAY cheaper than what people would need to spend to make it themselves (to recoup some cost on the craft). This was way less of problem in 3.15, as we were able to recover crafts much, much easier. Working on one item really helped with this problem. The market isn't taken over by "the most efficient entrepreneur" as Chris seems to think - it's a graveyard of 5 stat items, thrown to trade to recoup a small amount of what we lost trying to make an actual upgrade on a 300ex build. If all high-end crafts are ride or die, the market will always be flooded this way - and not as a result of great game design as Chris claims.

This might be controversial, but I feel that quality as a whole isnt really needed. There is a lot of mechanical and item bloat around quality, and outside very specific things (that can be replaced by other mechanics) quality is like a chore/something is annoying to interact with. This would help with both reducing clutter, and also things like chisels for maps for botting etc. (Removing chisels would also help narrow the efficientcy issues with top end players vs more casual which I think is a good thing)

Chris loves this idea of "dropping a mirror, dropping a headhunter, or slamming that t1 mod from an ex" but from someone who got a headhunter from Gwen in the second week, I lost all my drive to play. Getting 90ex instantly when you didn't expect it feels terrible, at least in my opinion, because now you don't need to play the game for gear, you can have whatever you want and didn't have to work for it, and your entire progression ends. Very similar to what I would imagine an rmter would experience. I loved ritual because I could farm harvest for all my different wacky characters and see the progression firsthand.

on topic of auras - I think something like Smite or March of the Legion boots are both great ideas. This is partly why I think minion builds are boring, even though I'd love to play one. Some archetype of "blessing" or "empowering" your minions/allies for a short time and having to frequently recast the skill; maybe some channeling skill that would empower your allies as long as you channel it, and you can maybe do a CwC Smite-like skill or something. Possibilities are there, I believe. Furthermore, an active cursing support or a cursing minion build archetype utilizing bane-like minion skill would be a banger, I think edit: oh, and I would love to see summon guardian go, at least in it's current interation. It'd be cool for guardian to be the main skill you can scale with weapons/armor or something, but it being a pseudo-aurabot sucks big time

Also the issue with the "True" endgame content being "gated" behind certain builds similarly to how deep delving can't be done realistically on a number of skills-This makes sense. However there is not really a case where X build that CAN do the "True" endgame that CAN'T do other content making the argument nonsensical. You can't balance true endgame in a way that only a certain number of skills can hope to complete it when those same skills can literally do everything else in the game. For example i like my self made self cast Freezing pulse build which may or may not be like any other one (I don't use references so I don't know) But I cannot complete the simulacrum at all, I die instantly as enemies spawn around me and that's the end. Meanwhile a toxic rain character gets a literal free pass to about all the content allowing it to easily complete the majority-If not ALL of poe's content with it being immune to reflect so it can do Atziri, High damage and damage uptime in addition to being ranged so bosses like Sirus are hardly a challenge and others for similar reasons like maven. This means they are literally balancing around 3-4 builds that will continue to conquer all content while people that want to use an off meta skill will be gated due to a number of factors (Like reflect or tanky mobs spawning instantly around you and auto attacking) that they can't get around. If this is truly the extent of Gggs balance design when it comes to their "Aspirational" content it is deeply flawed to its core and like many skills-They activity refuse to address it in a meaningful way and the game suffers because of it.

I think the biggest problem is that people started looking at the game as a (second) job, instead of a hobby. I did watch the previous two podcasts/interviews as well, and even tho they were the same in nature more or less - i. e. the streamers present had a different expectation or need from what the game offers, they still managed to stay respectful (well apart from RaizQT sometimes) to the person who is after all the CEO of the company. Which other company offered an honest talk with their players? I think if something prompts respect, that is. And on a more personal note, I think the answers he gave in all three interviews were very satisfactory: it both showed he understood the question and the need of the community, and also shed some light on the 'what's' and 'why's' behind one or another decision.

Or when you sit there for over an hour trying to buy an item that everyone has but hundreds of people just don’t answer or can’t be bothered leaving a map to trade the item…. People selling don’t think that maybe the buyer really wants or needs that item right now…. If I can’t buy an item within 3 players I just go play more and come back later. Farming a tabula isn't great because I show my friends. I don't have friends that care about anything I do in Poe. A six link is nice because I can start to play the game. Nuisance isn't why I play the game. I play the game because it's a game. The experience is fun. I don't play to get an item so that I can stop playing. I get an item so I can make some skill viable so that I can play the game. Playing Poe feels like you are lost. That feels bad. It feels great when you find direction. I play Poe because I have hope that I can eventually make some of these skills I like fun. Not because I get an item to show off. There is no one to show off to. It's a solo game. Honestly, if they just make maps less top heavy with better lower progression, I'll be happy. I'm tired of feeling like I need a8 to finally start my farm to finally start to get some pieces to play the character I want to play. Then I finally start the character, and I level again, and I don't progress my atlas more, or don't farm the right stuff to access the content, or something I want is behind some other content and I can't start doing that until I finish leveling.
