It was.all downhill once HoTs and LoTV dropped. I'm not sure if Starcraft 2 needed to be an episodically released game. Blizzard is one of the first game companies to start this whole "episodic" game release trend.
SC2 was the last hurrah of Blizzard for me. The last memory of waiting in line at gamestop for a game I preordered. No BS day 1 DLC, no season pass, no microtransactions. Just pure simple game. The excitement I felt waiting in line and getting my game I paid $60 for as a teenager which.... yo was a huge amount of money for a kid back then. Its just I haven't felt that feeling in a long time.
It feels, i dunno - like a normal human? If it's appliable to the presentation. Today any presentation just screams "fake with glitter over it", but people eat this shit and ask more. Then company delivers a half-baked product... DA:I, Andromeda, Cyberbug 2077, etc.
@@t.va.6611 blizzard might be bad today because of how money hungry they are,but in my opinion there will be no better game lore than starcraft lore from both games, something about the way protoss and zerg are different from us and the fact that there's only 2 other intelligent races in the galaxy is intriguing,i wish theyd make a starcraft universe shooter game,i still love rts,but i don't pay it nearly enough attention as i use to,i still love starcraft universe itself and having something like starcraft ghost be returned from the dead would be cool. yeah i know what they did with diablo immortal,i wish blizzard would turn back to how they use to be.
When you think you are 90% done, you get hit by the second 90%, that's the reason of the 12k extra builds the game needed to be done. I am a developer and I can tell you, that this hits close to home.
For anyone wondering about the clicking sounds: it's the sound an online poker client makes when it's your turn. The uploader was playing it while recording the screen.
Sora Lee "There's no sound, units, strategy, balance or attacks yet, but we'll totally deliver even though you've already given us your money and we thus have no incentive to do so..."
Sora Lee so true... -hey hows the game going? -we are about half way done! -well,is it playable? -ehh..... -PERFECT!!! lets sell people unfnished game !!! - ...
well it's hard to communicate when your beta testers are the actual players, some of them just play the game then rants the game for "unfinished game ew", some will actually help developers but may take days, it's much easier if you have hands-on control of the beta testers
Actually the whole point of early access is to give developers money to actually finish the game, because there are multiple cases of indie developers working on some games at home as a side project while having a full-time job.
That's normal for a project of that length. Most little mods I do go through about at least 1,000 builds before I'm satisfied with them. BTW - All a build means is they compiled everything everybody had and messed around with it until they decided to go back to work. (Or in other cases, took it to Blizzcons for people to mess around with) In my case, 1,000 builds means that's about how many times I save everything.
GeekMaster6000 A build is a bit more then just every time a change is made. A build is when a commit is pulled, or added to the already-existing build, and a commit is made when people *submit* a change.
GeekMaster6000 Well, it's a bit different. Because just submitting a change means that person's build has been updated, but in order for the official build to be updated a commit is pulled. The difference is that a person can save changes, and technically it's a build to them but it's not a build to everyone else until the pull.
+A7C11 The scaling argument can be applied to a lot of things in StarCraft, but I believe Thors needed to be made smaller for gameplay reasons (I think they would just clutter the view too much). I agree that I like some of the aesthetics in the earlier builds, such as the shinier metallic look of the Thor and the protoss portraits. The archon also looked pretty awesome.
+Biggerboot I remeber seeing some beta/alpha build video debuting terran units and in that the thor was this huge unit that had to be BUILT by an SCV and it even had a siege mode and everything, I thought that was way cooler than the thors we know today. I suppose that would be similar with respect to the archon. It seems like Blizzard had in mind two really cool late game unit ideas but scrapped(modified) them for some reason.
The click is not the sound of the presentation switching screens or videos. It's not even in sync with the switching of views, nor are there as many transitions as there are clicks, so why would you even think that? Also, it is clear this is not a presentation that is interactive to allow manual transitions on command. It's just a video running and he has to talk along side it.
I mean starcraft 1 and expansion brood wars was a massive success. So i bet investors were easy on the money when it came to second game, especially since it was first e sport game.
It's a shame they didn't take the script as seriously as they did the technical part. I played both parts already 10 times. The first part was much more serious and more mature, I would call it category R, and the second part is PG-13. It feels like the story of the first part is not ideal, but it was written by people with a level of knowledge comparable to university students .. It would seem that we have grown, they have too... Many naive works of art from our childhood grew up with us and began to acquire adult materialistic features or even rethought, without ceasing to be themselves, without losing the spirit of the original source. But not StarCraft. He not only remained in the same place, but also took a step back. Feels like the second part was written by schoolchildren. The game itself became brighter, the feeling of stuffiness disappeared, a large amount of children's humor appeared. An evil villain who is evil because he is evil, Prophecies, chosen ones, cosmic magic, abstract gods devouring worlds to which it is difficult to experience any kind of emotion, just as a person is not able to feel the distance in light years (since our biology was formed in conditions where this was not necessary), pink queen of blades, with a healthy complexion, neat eyebrows, hair styling and lip gloss with stilettos from a modeling agency called "swarm" ... if stilettos are her evolutionary advantage, then what does the world in which she exist look like? The world of strip clubs? Queen of our ... "blades". She is no longer a ruthless sociopath and manipulator, but a campy hysterical model from high society in Zerg. The first part is materialism, realism, and the second part is idealism and romanticism / classicism. The first SC is Terminator 1, 2, Alien 1, 2, Bladerunner and SC2 is Terminator 3, 5. This was the first time the game hurt me, the second time was BL3. In the opening videos Wol, Hots, LotV there is the spirit of the first part of the game, but in the game itself and in the rest of the videos, everything is much and much worse. And it's not the high cost of the videos, watch the SC: BroodWar videos. They are outdated, but they have a sense of danger, war, impending threat. The videos in the second part seem to be made by Hollywood. Secondary techniques, only proven methods. They seemed to come off the assembly line, as a result of the work of a raw neural network, and not of people.
The biggest shame is how un-talked about this aspect of SC2 is. I guess no one cared or just forgave it, but I was deeply disappointed, and confused when no one seemed to notice.
lol i didnt even realize how messy and well, un 3d like it was when they started, but Hey, it paid off with 10 years of programming and polishing, we got this awesome game today, THANKS BLIZZARD!!! :D
100% agreed. Wish they'd at least have kept those models and textures stored somewhere so I could use them in mods instead of having to treasure hunt custom models. I really detest SC2's art style.
sc1's gritty art style won't work on 3d games as good as sc2 did. sc2 was aesthetically perfect compared to alot of rts games, most "dark“ rts games are simply a pain to play for a long period of time, it's only cool at first glance
@@yamao4938 It's not fair because it was released years later, but I'd kill for SC2 to look as good as SC Remastered. All the sprites are made with pre-rendered 3D models anyways so it can be achieved with 3D.
Am I the only one who just LOVES the Terran structures in these older builds? Seriously, they look so much better than the ones in the final build - much more detailed and have that metalic look (instead of looking like they were made of plastic).
It's so strange looking at the comments now and reading people talking about blizzard with respect and belief. Nowadays this video makes me a little sad actually..
EA's Starcraft: 1: Launch starcraft as it was 2005 2: EA Downplays backlash, some CEO mocks the fanbase as "angry nerds" 3: EA Issues statement in 2006, aknoledging slight issues with the launch of the game, spends 4 paragraphs detailing how the entertainment industry lives on the edge of whats possible, raves how the developers are very passionate about their game and thanks the customers for the awesome feedback and how it will help them do better next time. 4: Starcraft dev team split in 8 goups, each one working on a future EA sports game. Blizzard shut down. Starcraft is never heard of again.....
@@LeafMaltieze is there any good old-school, big game studio left? valve, Id, might not have the corporate stink, but they are either not developing anything, or too much in disarray
I come back to this video from time to time. THIS video, ladies and gentlemen, is the history of Blizzard, of RU-vid, of the gaming industry, probably of the internet as well. It marked a great moment in the 2000-2010 era. It started a revolution, it showed what it took to make a GOOD (3D STRATEGY) GAME! Ohh how I miss those days...
game was functionally ready by build 4400 and took them to build 16000 before it was shipped, goes to show how so much of a game's development is spent debugging and working out the details
say well theres lore reasons dragoons WERE ONLY MADE ON AUIR as it is scared and since then they remade them into 2 programs kalah=immortals zeratul and the darktemplar=stalkers
The art direction was scary, dark and intriguing now we have a world of warcraft in space; pretty much what they were trying to avoid for SC 1 when fans started whinning (around the times of SC 1's alpha) about how SC 1 looked like Orcs vs humans in space or "Warcraft goes purple" so they created a new engine from the scratch for SC 1. Now, for sc 2 we have space elven instead of protoss, over stereotyped cowboys instead of the badass and violent human race; terrans and ... purple bugs instead of zergs. I remember being genuinously scared at SC 1 i bet no 10-13 years old kid can say the same about SC 2. I'll put it like this: Keep the core gameplay and smart interface mechanics from SC 2 but destroy the music and the bright graphics / cutscenes, we need less color and more dark realism or w/e and replace em with SC1's or at least a more sc 1 kinda music/graphics. You doubt it? Then please compare the gun sounds from the terrans or the death sounds with the terrans in SC 2 , then ask yourself what sound is darker? What sound is more immersive? What sound fits more and makes you feel anything? it's a clear downgrade! Just to mention two.
Sergio Esteban Fritz Rieloff I don't know where you go the wow in space, when starcraft was basically like that, then again, you could say warcraft 3 was starcraft in fantasy what I didn't like about sc2 was probably the story, I preferred the zergs being the evil race that existed to fuck shit up (they probably came from another galaxy or something like that) now they added in fantasy elements like you said, and made zerg "oh they're just misunderstood" also I don't get what you mean by the stereotyped cowboys, the terrans (well the ones in the korpulu sector) are suppose to be parodies of red necks, jim raynor was the cowboy (and he was kinda)
I think the big problem with SC2 is that the models frankly look like they belong in WoW. It's more to do with the art style. Everything looks cartoon proportioned and designs that were sleek in SC1 now look clunky, chubby and stubby.
***** what are you on about? in SC1 the units looked cartoonish, I don't see how SC2 look cartoonish at all, maybe its because of was Sergio said, its too bright and bloomy that it looks cartoonish, plus the engine is the same one from warcraft 3 so its probably understandable.
The wraith is probably the best example. Compare the model in SC2 to the 3DCG model in SC1. The SC2 model is quite bulky looking compared the the sleek version in SC1. Especially in the weapon systems.
Activison didn't Bought Blizzard They Merged Because Vivendi Said It.Vivendi is the father Company of two And Now They are going to get Ubisoft Too So get ready to Have UbiZardVision
i was also either 11 or 12 when i first saw Starcraft on my friends PC... man the graphics seemed so realistic and that whole atmosphere.... "they can dig into the ground?! woooow....!" ahhh, the memories (mm)
How complaining are you, it has nothing to do with Activision, the story was not divided for economic reasons, but for narrative reasons, the rts game campaigns generally have 30 missions and do not have this elaborate interface, which is chapter 2 and 3 are what were normally known as expansions, which is what the players of rts always ask for more missions and that is what they offered us with the traditional addition of units If we would not say that ambitious blizard divided the history of starcraft and broodwar to get more money, the work in SC "that each chapter had surpassed any rts to date I play like gray goo they scratched the quality of the hundredamtographic but none had an interface like the one were the hyperion the leviathan or the spear of Adun
@@drakolobo Fist thing, you don't know what "economic" means. Secondly, the narrative was terrible. They did it for financial reasons. If you think otherwise then you are naive about Activision.
@@Protagonist I don't think you will be able to differentiate how the rts were sold before and how Starcraft2 was sold, because they are the same mechanics, the same amount of missions, the same mechanics of adding units and the same expansion system, Wanted WoL, HotS LoV They were narrated in 30 missions? If that were so, people would already be asking for one more expansion and still with this wanting another one that they planned this from the beginning, is the problem? this is RTS working and still working. What you will not like is the story is your opinion, for others there were three well differentiated campaigns with their own style and setting.
@@drakolobo I can differentiate them easily. SC1 was sold as a whole game and expanded upon. SC2 was sold in an incomplete state you had to buy three times. LoV barely resembles WoL. Yes, the problem is they planned this from the beginning and no, it's not how they have always worked. It is not an excuse, it is a flaw in their planning and displays pure greed rather than a desire to make a good product. You claim it was for narrative reasons. You are completely mistaken. Activision will only and exclusively, 100% of the time, focus on money before product instead of making a good product to make money. This is why many people dislike them.
Early builds are usually just to test the engine's functionality rather than the graphics. As for sc1, i think the graphics are good for a 1998 RTS release date.
Maybe in one of their expansions, they can make decimated buildings and units stay on the map. This may lag the game a bit, but it would look really cool.
It's meant to be a special effect to imitate an old way to see pictures... I don't remember the name of the machine but if you don't recognize this sound, it simply means that you are too young. Also, this sound is a lot to loud.
Now, you basically can't see the difference between your and your enemy units if they're the same race. If you add all that fancy detailed terrain and reduced lighting effects they almost blend with the ground...
John Connor Starcraft universe is the upcoming MMO to this universe and so far that has severely affected rts warcraft that they by the way are probaly never going to do due to it.
Sorry I don't understand what you're trying to say. SC Universe is just a mod of SC2 and will never have more than 500 players at a time. That's not enough to kill off any game.
John Connor okay to be frank, whats more profitable? A game you pay for once or one that you require subscriptions for? There is already talks about converting the RTS universe into a RPG MMO Game like world of warcraft. This would take away the motivation to make a RTS like what happened to the warcraft francise.
He means Starcraft Universe is a mod, it's free. It doesn't directly profit Blizzard unless someone buys a game because of it. What you're talking about is that they would make MMO sequel for Starcraft II. If you think that Starcraft Universe as a mod would somehow hurt them, you're out of your mind. It keeps people playing Starcraft 2, which means it attracts more people. Which means there are more people to buy their crap once they want to check out the campaigns, etc.
There was so much hard work that old blizz put for this amazing game and reading up these comments praising old blizz. I'm disappointed of what blizz is now in 2021. They not even working on sc3, I hope that I'm wrong. Atleast they gave us this great game, one that I still play today, even though it's now in "maintenance mode."
I remember seeing the release and almost shitting my pants in excitement...almost 8 years later and I've beaten the game countless times and still play online today...
This level of polish was the reason why blizzard was legendary, instead of the mediocre, second class gaming studio with tons of money to waste we have nowadays Imagine if this team handled the WCIII Reforged even if they didn't work on WC series at all....
Why do these damn devs have to show me a wholly new unit that never made it into the game, that I've never seen before, and then immediately kill it without showing me what it does? xwx
There are some models that I haven't seen outside of this video, and I'll probably never know what unit they were meant to be and what they did because the presentation was squeezed into 5 minutes.
When devs actually know what they are talking about, instead of spilling bs for pre-order point a.k.a Anthem, BF 2042... Nowaday everyone just goes mad and release everything half-baked and fix it as they go.
you will barely be able to make something with the looks of a HD realistic looking game, but you can achieve something that is stylized in a way that makes the game feel good if the gameplay is good
likeaJohnny none yet... i've only thought about it. I've started one, but scrapped it; there needs to be a lot of thought put into any program lest it turn out poorly. Planning is one of the most important parts of software dev.
During 2008 and 2009, they would've also updated the models to have more polygons and be more consistent, and also create all of the portrait models and record the final voice lines and sound effects.
Because blizzard is now a huge money grabbing corporation. Most of the guys who made SC1 have left Blizzard and hence they make poor decisions. The dragoon was absolutely essential unit...the new immortal is lifeless.
Limrasson That makes so much more sense now that I reflect back on Starcraft 1's campaign. Thanks, you really clarified this to someone who should've known this xD
DrScaphandre maybe 10 years, maybe earlier, maybe never. but if there will be at any time Sc3 released, then i think it will be in like 5 years or earlier. or do u can imagine that there will be 1 more addon after lotv?
+LoDrAkK/// they said it may happen but, whole characters will be different they said. I mean no Raynor, no Zeratul, no Kerrigan. Maybe new class like Warcraft 3 reign of chaos. They love doing this.
+LoDrAkK/// I'd love SC3 but I think Warcraft 4 has a better chance of happening first. WC3's gameplay has never really been duplicated and it could really use a graphical overhaul more than SC.
nah, the new release is way more polished, the older one requires an inhuman amount of apm for no reason other than system limitations, as well as having an even worse balance
@@highlander8419 SC2 does have better pathing, but SC1 is not as bad as you probably think it is. Pathing in SC1 is actually pretty good, the reason units bump around is due to a flaw in the engine that bound the collision of a unit to it's sprite size. For example, when the Dragoon walks, it's sprite gets wider as it's legs move, and that causes it's collision box to increase. This frequently causes it's collision box to overlap with that of other units round it, which causes they to stop, and try to move away from eachother. This is what causes all the stuttering in their movement. Goliaths, Ultralisks, and Dragoons had the greatest fluctuation on collision size due to their walking animations, and that's why they were so bad at moving around. As for the 12 unit selection, I have no idea why they limited it so much. There were mods that I used back in the day that would expand the selection up to 255. It was definitely possible for the engine to do that. There were even cheat client's you could use that would let you use the 255 unit selection in Battle.net matches against unmodded players. I know this because I did that. I was a teenager, and was trash at the game, but Use Map Settings levels with tons of units were a blast when you could select every unit at the same time.
+César Dávila well you see, im 15 years old, and i love my old games, my dad gave me the ATARI, NES, SNES and all of them have EVERY single game (each with like 5k games i think) Roms, i have the controllers too, i love those games, super awesome, entertaining, and really creative, i think games back then were even more creative than now, we only see a bunch of shooting games
+Dante Delgadillo Kek, go explore other game genres then other than shooters, newb. :D I hardly play any shooters other than ARMA 3 which is more of a military simulator sandbox.
