I used to do a bunch of custom painting on railroad models back in the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. I used Solvaset during all those years, but eventually I started using Microscale’s micro sol or micro set (I’ve forgotten which is weaker!) to position the decal, then blot it off and hit it with the Solvaset. Always vastly preferred applying decals over a gloss surface, then dull coat and weather over it. My preference was always Scalecoat enamel paint. After nearly a 30 year absence, I’m easing back into the hobby at the tender old age of 62, and the changes in the hobby in general, and the painting part specifically, are profound! I’m actually surprised that Solvaset and microsol & set are still available! I’m still in the intimidated stage over airbrushing water based paint, but we’ll see how it goes! Good video!

Happy Birthday! I recommend pipetting some of the Solvaset into a smaller bottle to work with. I knocked over a full bottle once and decided to never do that again. About a week ago I mentioned doing a test of masking tapes and today I found that a cheaper brand of tape that I bought on sale left yellow staining behind when left overnight on white paint. I will try fixing it with white overspray. I will stick (pun intended) with Tamiya tape, which seems predictable.

happy belated birthday. I've been a modeler since the 1070s and have been using Solvaset almost as long. But I use it in a 3 part system: Micro Set, Micro Sol, and finally Solvaset. I always let the decal solution do it's thing, then lightly work out any air with a Q tip which also helps to set and settle down a decal which is why any clear decal film shows some silvering in your test. Also, never let any decal solution left to puddle around the decal as it will stain and and or damage the paint which is also around all the decals which really show on the darker surfaces. I've also been decaling for many years without a gloss application on any type of model paint Just make sure that the paint surface is smooth.

Thanks for adding Solvaset to your decal setting solution reviews. Interesting that there is now no brush. All my purchases over the years had the nylon brush inside the cap. Using a "real" brush is probably better for almost all setting solutions anyway. I do mostly railroad and some military and I have had generally good results from Solvaset. The only problem that I have run across is that sometimes a drop of Solvaset will be missed on top of a multicolor logo decal and the strong solution can cause a "blowout" where the color layers of the decal bleed in one spot. By the way, thanks for the recommendation on Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. I have added it to my tray of decal solutions and I have been getting good results on train models. Happy Birthday, best wishes for many more. Lastly, I use a few of the Abteilung 502 paints for weathering. They are regular oil paints but they come in a neat little tube with a small brush attached to the lid. Quite convenient.

Loved watching your video! But can you use the solvset on glass with waterslide decals? And is it water proof? I want to make shot glasses for a party and would like guests to be able to take them home to use as well, but only if they will hold up. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

Rex, belated happy birthday. Great job yet again. How would you rank the Walthers against the solutions in you previous test? I will buy something on your recommendation (e.g. MicroMark sprue cutters which I love) and then you test other items and don't always state how it compares with previous items recommended.

Never tried TS 80 but TS 13 gloss spray by Tamiya with the combination of markfit is fantastic. I had some old Zvezda decals and I put them over some cast texture witch I made with mr surfacer for a really good effect. After I sealed the decals in with TS 13 lacquer I sprayed some acrylic based flat topcoat from Mr hobby. All this products with no interaction and a perfect finish. The decals was german crosses witch had a painted on effect, now it looks like I painted them myself.

Rex witch decal water dipper did you like the most? This one or the one from master tools (Trumpeter) witch you have previously used?
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 3 года назад
This one for sure but I believe I got a bad sponge with mine. I would personally just get a small sponge and put it in a small Tupperware container with a tiny bit of water on the bottom to keep it damp. Then just dip the decal in water about 45 seconds then put it on the sponge to finish off.

A word of Caution about this, it will Burn the Ink of the certain brands of Decals such as Super Scale into the paint of the model. Back in the 1980's when Monogram added a White Goo in the Decals, everyone hated it and they would not settle. I found that if you wash off the Goo, you can put the Decals down and get them settled down.

Love to see those Italeri paints there! Btw did you buy their thinner? Its milky and I belive its latex based like the paints if not I think you can use Vallejo's thinner. I would recomend you to use Vallejo flow improver while testing the Italeri's because they dry really quick. Hope you had a nice birthday Rex.
@barbatosrex9473

I'm having trouble getting their thinner. Going to try overseas for it. It is accurate, they're made by Vallejo so thinning them like Vallejo might be my way to go

Why EVERYONE; BUT ALL model makers who do comparisons of fluids for decals, as a surface on which they will test various setting and solvent solutions, take a flat piece of wing or fuselage of an airplane where the only "obstacles" for snug fit decals are a couple of panels and ten rivets??! Why doesn't anyone take, for example, a 1/35 part of the tank model, painted and gloss coated (or prepared with Future Wax for floors) i.e. turret with closed side hatches on German PzKpfW lll or lV tanks and show how these fluids overcome serious bumps, because if decal setter and solvent in such places ensure the appearance of the numbers as if they were "drawn", then such products really work wonders! Therefore; more relief and more painted plastic (both acrylic and enamel or lacquer type) so let's see..
