How to build, paint and apply decals to a car model kit using only basic tools and equipment. These tips and techniques can be applied to any plastic model kit. Featured: Airfix 1/32 scale Ford Fiesta World Rally Car (WRC).
Airfix provided me with this kit for free, however they have not paid me or told me what to say. My opinions are honest and my own.

This is probably the most complete beginner's tutorial there is, period. This is what I would show someone who wants to take up on scale modeling. Congratulations, great job!

This is awesome. I love how you use the tools and materials available from the beginner kit to make a great model. Helps in terms of getting someone to try the hobby out. Some modeling videos can be over the top and intimidating.

Yeah, most other "basic beginner tutorial" when it comes to painting: "Now take your primer (spray can)...", "Choose something that's not aggressive to plastic", "Wet sand it...", "Apply clear coat...". I mean c'mon. I have basic model, 0 skills, and I'm not gonna buy an arsenal of spray cans (and protective gear) just to see if I'm even really into it.

I was so tempted to jump on getting an airbrush, and I'm just on my first scale model, and I was always told that the brush painting doesn't make the car look good but the way you painted it came out really smooth! I might as well start with that first and just get an airbrush in the future. Thanks!

Once you're ready for an airbrush, l recommend any of the following brands: lwata, Paasche, Grex or Harder & Steinbeck. Don't think you'll go wrong with any of these brands. Hope this helps.

I only recently got back into modelling after about a year or so of being away from it. Watching this defiantly helped bring me back up to date and remember my process when doing a realistic kit, I think the only thing I'd do differently would be to lay down a spray primer on to the model before painting.

With using that type of glue, you can also snip a piece off the sprue and using clippers, make a point. You can also use parts of the sprue to mix the paint also.

Thanks for all these tips. I haven't attempted to make models since my teens and I'm now in my late 40's and on the verge of buying my first model car after mulling over what to buy for the last few weeks. The reason why I hestitated was because I felt I would have been in the dark, so this has given me some confidence as an initial springboard. Thank you!

Love your videos, I started my first Airfix BF-109 after discovering your channel! I now also have a Hurricane and a Zero under my belt, with a P-40 on the way! I wanted to echo others in agreeing how useful it was to see the paint coverage changing with every coat - I found that how awful it looks after one or even a few coats was really hard to accept as a beginner! Love your work, can't wait to see what you make next!

I always built models with only paintbrushes...and it was fun and satisfying. I later tried airbrushing and it was just too much for me somehow...and definitely kind of expensive too. I love what I just watched....this is the first video anyone should watch if they;re going to build a car model. You used acrylic paint, no primer...and no sanding? I am blown away! Also, no clear coat?

Hey Owen. Great result using basic tools... just shows what can be achieved without spending a fortune on every possible gadget and paint types with washes for weathering etc. need to get cracking on some of my models but haven’t had the chance recently owing to having a 7 month old baby to keep entertained in our house now haha! Glad to see your videos on my feed again. I have a half started diorama and a few repairs to do to models after my wife went a little crazy with the duster! Wish me luck! All the best. Marc

This is a great tutorial, I don’t build air fix cars, but this is amazing. If you wanna get some better more vibrant colours e.g blue or red then try some spray cans

Lovely job Owen, it seems you got a good result with the decal fix, although I would recommend a gloss clear coat before decals, just to make sure you're not going to get any silvering whatsoever. I think I want to make a car now!

To replace the glue tube, tamiya extra thin is probably the best thing to use!! Also, if you're not good with a brush, tamiya spray paints is really nice and easy to use

Thanks Owen, great video with a build out of the box. If I may have some remarks : -1 Most rallycars, and this Fiesta WRC have white wheels not silver (maybe that's a mistake in the instructions?) -2 I would paint the wheelnuts a darker color (use a toothpick or so). Looks so much better. -3 The 'Michelin'-decals on the tires look way too big, that's not your fault. -4 The interior is correct in white but the doorpanels should be black. Still great video, keep up the good work.

I did not expect a new quick kits video today... let alone a car! Try one of the amazing tamiya kits, with tamiya rattle cans and Mr Hobby Super Clear III, then polish with tamiya compounds. You'll get a proper car glossy finish. I use 2k but that's nasty stuff for painting at home, it works fine with my spray setup though

What I like about 1/32 cars is they are close enough to 1/35 to combine elements from both.

I would suggest using compressed air or a hair dryer in the cold/low setting to dry the washed parts, that way you won't get any water spots during drying.

Hey Owen, I have a few questions. In your decal tutorial, you soak the decal in warm water, spread microset on the model, then put the decal on the model, and a coat or two of micro sol. Is Humbrol Decal-fix equivalent to microset, should I soak my decals in microset, and do you need to add microsol to Humbrol Decal-fixed decals? Thanks.

As an early viewer of this channel I must say, Owen,When you show 1st coat and second...I think that you really help the beginners with that action,mostly because when I first made a model I didnt knew what a successful early coat was so I messed up a bit,As If I was a beginner rn,I would really loved to see how a first coat is and how much I should thin my paint. Btw I didnt expected you to make a car,although it looks like you was working on scale cars for years 😂👌🙂

I'm pleased you liked the idea of showing each coat because yeah, I think that a lot of beginners expect a perfect finish with only 1 coat but that's not gonna happen. I'm also pleased you liked the suprise ;)

For the wheels use some sand paper its way easier to work with on curved surfaces 😁 and you can buy it pretty much everywhere

Great, interesting video bud. Would you say that all the excess plastic mould marks/flashings are a pain, or just part of the model making process?

They're kind of both haha! Kits from Tamiya, Hasegawa and Bandai have amazing moulding usually and have no flashing or pin marks and that makes them a lot quicker to build. But sometimes its nice to have a bit of extra work/challenge to do
