Umbrella trees are so very prone to Scale insect, yes it sounds like the dry spots on the lower stems are scale also, they can be stubborn to get rid of, but the rubbing alcohol and Neem oil will work well to keep them under control, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

I've already put neem oil many times, changed the soil and also put DE in the new soil but they keep on coming back and killing more and more plants. My passion for plants has turned into a sad story lately since i've lost more than 40 plants to them... I won't bring any new plants in for a while! I also wish you lot's of love, health and happiness!

@@charlainericard7975 Whenever I purchase a new plant, I always remove the soil right down to the roots and start clean, even during the winter. I have lost only a few over the years due to shock, but I believe a change in soil helps to keep pests away. It sounds like the soil you purchased was already effected with thrips. So sorry. Fortunately I can only remember once where I had a contaminated bag of soil, hope that does not happen too often.

@@desertplantsofavalon I just got rid of one of my oldest cacti, an Echinocereus ochoteranae, when I discovered it was badly infested with scale. It was at least 20 years old, maybe 30, and probably about ready to bloom. I hated to toss it, but fear that once a plant has scale one can never be completely rid of it. None of the other cacti on the same windowsill appear to be infested, so I have no idea where it came from all of a sudden. But I'm keeping a close eye on them all. My daughter has the same tattoo on one arm, and the Manchester Bee on the other. She presented a paper at that Manchester conference, on Prince's sexuality. When she was a student at the University of Minnesota she worked at First Avenue, Prince's major venue during his rise to fame in the 1980s. It was shut down during the filming of the movie, Purple Rain, and she was hired as security on the set. She dated one of his bodyguards and went on the Purple Rain tour with the band. She spent time hanging out with Wendy and Lisa & went shopping with them in Chicago to buy a birthday gift for Sheila E. They remembered her when she met with them again at a reunion in Minneapolis a couple of years ago. He was a very positive & important influence on her life, and she was devastated by his death.

@@desertplantsofavalon Lots of love to you and yours as well. I don't want to forget to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I've learned a lot from you, and appreciate all the love you put into what you do. My daughter credits Prince in large part for her work ethic, though she gets it from her parents too. I think that sometimes people look at famous musicians and think they have an easy life, not realizing how much effort goes into their success. Prince was one of the hardest working & most dedicated to perfection. His success came at a terrible price, unfortunately.
