My problem with video microscopy and scalp examination in general is that the scalp has so much area to cover. It is very easy to miss an area that is a problem. Especially difficult is a person with long hair as it could cover up an area that has an issue. I had a video microscope used twice but am not confident that the trichologist looked at every spot throughout the scalp. That would take a long time to do and evaluate.

Dear dr. It's Talya from Netherlands. I would appreciate your advice Does a scalp biopsy permanently remove hair follicles in the area from which the biopsy was taken? And what is the alternative way, if there is one, to diagnose if the hair loss is Chronic telogen effluvium or FPHL (Female pattern hair loss)? Many thanks in advance

Hey doctors great video! What are the other conditions you were referring to that can mimic male pattern baldness/ androgenetic alopecia?

Could you talk about scalp folliculitis in detail. What would be the course of treatment since it's a recurring thing?

Quite a bit of interest in the community with topical Dutasteride being a possible way to reduce 5AR locally with minimal systemic absorption due to its molecular weight. There is a real lack of data however. Are the biopsies in Australia able to determine DHT levels?

I had a scalp biopsy three years ago it was painful and I never want to have one again. I had telogen effluvium which came with a lot of scalp pain and irritation especially in the crown area which I still have today. I am currently taking 50 mg of spironolactone which took away the pain 80% for about three weeks and now it is back. I follow up with my dermatologist this week. Can you tell me if dosage will help me with the pain? I am at my wits end I just want this to go away. I do have thinning at the crown especially but overall thinning due to going through menopause.

I’m a 22 male and I also get scalp pain once or twice a week. I noticed using a scalp brush in the shower when I shampoo helps relieve it and just doing scalp massages a bit. Wish there was just a cure

I was recently diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia but I feel like the Dr. Didn't really examine my scalp closely well at first as soon as he came into my exam room he said it's Androgenetic Alopecia and he explained what it is and so on. So I told him I've been experiencing very sensitivity all around my scalp but it's way more sensitive on the crown of my head and at times it does hurt to the touch or simply by moving my hair, it is very uncomfortable. He told me that was rare to experience but everyone is different. I do understand that everyone's different, but if the doctors say something is rare you would think that Dr. would like that patient to get a biopsy or whatever just to be sure, right? Idk but when the doctor used the word rare it sure gets me thinking especially when my scalp hurts to the touch. If you can I would really appreciate to know your opinion. 😊

Hi, does anyone out there know if trichotillomania would show up in a biopsy as inflammation around the follicles on the scalp? I would think so but I'm not sure

Hello doctors, I'm 17 years old and I've been diagnosed with sever androgenetic alopecia. My doctor prescribed minoxidil and finasteride and my hair loss is now stable. Is it advisable to get a hair transplant because my bald spots have affected my self esteem
@stevewise1656
@stevewise1656 3 года назад
Sorry to hear what you’re going theough and that’s very difficult specifically at your age. My 17 year old son us dealing with this as well. Keep your head up and continue to do research, meet with several other doctors, along with your parents. There are a lot of less than scrupulous “hair replacement” doctors. Some are seriously devoted to their practices and for others their work is less than professional.

If you go down the hair transplant route, pick someone that is a member of The International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeon (IAHRS). The vast majority of hair transplant doctors suck. It is worth traveling to someone that is on this list because they have been vetted as doing consistently superior work. However, at your age, they may not agree to give you a hair transplant because they don't want to burn through your donor hairs if, for instance, you end up having rapid hair loss down the line. Be cautious of doctors who are not concerned about your age and future progression of hair loss.

Is confocal microscopy able to determine if a scarring alopecia is active or burnt out or is a biopsy necessary to differentiate this?

I had just done my first punch biopsy on my hairline part of my scalp to find out if I have any signs of thinning hair. I will be getting the results after two weeks and removing the stitches. This was not necessarily a balding case at all. I'm in my early twenties and I remember my hair not growing as fast as I liked it to but its been growing a little faster since using new hair products. I have been questioning why I went with it.. but now that I have it done, I will need to follow my doctors instructions

How’d it go? I’m thinking of going for a biopsy to see if I’m suffering from traction alopecia alone. So that way if I do get a hair transplant I won’t have to opt for the use of finasteride if it’s solely that reason
@HealthySelfNThrive
@HealthySelfNThrive 2 года назад
@@yassingurhan6204 it turned out that it was just to test to see why my hair wasn't growing out as fast and why I had a receding hairline. My dermatologist told me it was due to excessive stress on my hair with the constant tight braiding styles I had on over a period of time.. which caused breakage and promoted lack of growth

@@HealthySelfNThriveI’m reading your comment and my dermatologist did a biopsy on my scalp for extreme hair loss in my mid 30s. I have lost about 50% of my hair in the past two years. The results: “your hair is in a resting phase. we can’t find any reason. We will put you on spironolactone, but if that doesn’t work, we’re out of options.” Spironolactone cause my blood pressure to plummet to 90/84 and she encouraged me to continue taking it (this would’ve been very dangerous). I had to stop taking it within days.

Dr. Vikaram and Dr. Russell your videos are a great source of information, thank you. Not sure if you can shed some insight in the following scenario: 1. From previous videos you mention finasteride is very safe based on past studies however, what about patients with a mild fatty liver is it still deemed safe? 2. In patients with Fatty liver/liver damage that generate excess estrogen will finasteride be effective in reducing hair loss?
