Scammed In Bangkok: Online Girlfriend Took Him For A Ride  

Unpopular opinion: if you have an “online” girlfriend, you don’t have a girlfriend.

How many of these scammers would take advantage of foreigners actually spend any time in prison?

She plays a long game this scammer. I'll bet she has dozens or more on the hook at a time.

Use hotel safes, why are these guys so clueless? wearing a Rolex is advertising that he is a fool. I think it does not matter how long the LDR has been, that is not the point, the point is protect yourself and do not advertise that you are a fool.

i can give you an idea , when you get to the hotel put anything valuable in the safe , keep about 2000 baht for partying

He had to have been sending her money during the 4 years. Otherwise the scammer would havs moved on to new targets

I had a girl play a long game on me from 2001 to 2005,it was heavy for 2 years but in 2005 I told her I was never going to build her a new house,in early 2006 while I was back in the USA ,she e-mailed me and said she had married an Aussie guy close to her age,she finally got her dream house in 2009,I meet him,he was a nice guy and worked hard as an engineer all over,actually I was kind of happy because I never really was going to get married and build a house in Thailand,her family was OK also,and when I went back to Thailand in 2010 for my last trip I took some beer and whiskey to them and saw her also,no animosaty from anyone,so I guess I left on good terms.

Use the hotel safe. And always pour your own drink. And also take your drink with you if you have to use the bathroom. Then at least the person you are with has limited offense.

There's good and bad everywhere, I have a 2yr online relationship with a superb divorced lady. Todate she has never asked me for a penny, despite my perceived wealth compared to hers. Off my own back, I have helped her Daughter with a small amount of money to help in her University Education, it was money I could well afford and made it clear it was a one off. I would trust this lady with my life and know that I would be safe, I have travelled to many Countries and know the score with regard to "Farang" relationships. If I could bring her permanently to the UK I would but that is not possible as I have explained to her. Oh it's not a blind relationship either, I have met her several times and know her family along with her life style, she knows I'm not a "Player" like many farangs are and knows that there is little chance of me moving out to Thailand.

An old fella once told me "If one head is full the other is empty", its so true, most men think with their "Appendage", yes i was guilty of that🙃 too old now.

The first rule of thumb is to have your companion registered in the hotel reception desk, then as everyone noticed, why he didn't put his valuables in the room safe?? Many question marks. Another scammer-prey.

With you coming from police work, I believe that would be a big deterrent to attracting a criminal element. I would be tempted to state that I run real thick with police, but then I am committing deceit, so I wonder how to elude the bad element. I have never been to a dating site myself, but I had a friend who would always go there, and it was one scam after another continually to pry something loose from him. Love the quiet peaceful streets.

Who is chatting online with a woman from Thailand. Often it's the Thai boyfriend chatting and sending the thai woman to meet up. Talk about how funny the chat was and what was talked about and the woman doesn't know. Hahaha

Hi Bill, this may sound harsh but they best way to protect yourself against that type of situation in my opinion is to never trust anyone until they have earnt their trust. This cannot be done over the internet and must be a long time physically together relationship and not just a week or two. Hope this makes sense.

For me, I don't think it was smart to use the internet to date until you are in the country. I may give it a shot when I'm settled in a bit, or maybe not. The long distance thing doesn't work for me anyhow, and you add in the horror stories and I had no interest.

Falling for a foreign woman is common and you never really know what's going on until you arrive. Wearing an expensive watch in a country where hard labor earns $10 a day is crazy.

Be smart next and wear fake Rolex. So you can get the last laughs.

Met my Filipina girlfriend on line and because of family issues not myself was not able to get to the Philippines rapidly. When everything was fine but many expat volgers and they told me I must join them which I had no interest in. Some were former vietnam vet and had no interest in their war stories as I was 2 tours as a combat medic. These expat were pushing very young like 20 yo homely province Filipinas on old guys for a fee. They just human trafficking and contacted philippine officials and they had a department to investigate this 2 of these expats ended deported 2 found me and threatened me in front of my girlfriend. One of the Filipinas she knew as my girlfriend is 41. I guess it is a a problem. I stay out philippine legal issues.

I met women on the internet including my wife but I was actually living here so it's just a way to find a person you can date. Shouldn't take more than a week of chatting before you decide to meet.

So that land was 611 sq wah so 9,165,000 baht or ~260k USD. Land prices in Chiang Mai are mental. The average salary is what like 20-25k/month? How does anyone except the super wealthy afford to build anything. You easily find cities in the US with a much higher income and cheaper land. Imagine if that was in the actual city instead of some random village far away from the center.

Hi Bill. I’ve got a teak house and have had it since 2004. I was told before building it that old teak is more resistant to termites than new teak. Over 20 years, I can attest to that. Very little of the old teak has been eaten. Unfortunately, the wall supports inside of the house were made from a “strong wood “ that was treated chemically to resist termites. About a year ago, I was grabbing the frame of a teak window and noticed that I could move the whole wall fairly easily. On inspection, there was not much left from the interior wall supports. I had to have that whole wall disassembled, the supports replaced with old teak, and reassembled, for a cost of about $1,500. I used to hire a company to spray but didn’t during Covid. I have it sprayed since discovering the damage. They are at the house once a month for 90 minutes and spray into the tubes underneath, spray inside and spray in the garden area it costs 15,000 baht a year. Since I’m not there, I’d prefer to have the inside sprayed. Probably not when I move there permanently in 2 years.
