Before you go to Xochimilco watch this video so you don’t get scammed in Mexico City like we did! And not only were we victims of this scam in Mexico - our friend was also assaulted.
Xochimilco is a neighborhood south of central Mexico City and it’s here where you go and take colorful trajineras through the Xochimilco canals. Xochimilco Mexico City is a lot of fun - but unfortunately we had been played, and scammed from the start. We made this video about Xochimilco so you know what to expect and what to avoid before you make your journey to Xochimilco.
This was the first bad experience we have had in Mexico since being here, so please don’t judge Mexico City or the country of Mexico from this one interaction. We love Mexico and it’s people, and hope that this video prevents others from falling victim to this Mexico City scam. #mexicocity #scam #xochimilco

I’m glad you’re keeping it positive. I went to Xochimilco by myself as a single girl over Christmas and didn’t have any problems, also took an Uber from Reforma for $10. I loved it and will be going back every chance I get. I guess I did bargain with the boat, but knew it was supposed to be 500 pesos, so refused and walked away until they dropped it to that price. Micheladas seem to be 100 pesos everywhere there, and the rest of the street food “canal food” was about double what I saw in Mexico City, (I think the corn was 50 pesos) but to be expected. Two lessons learned: 1) NEVER take cabs in Mexico City, all the locals will insist on Ubers (except at the airport where they are properly registered). 2) always ask the price before you buy anything In Mexico, not matter what or where you are. I would also mention that more often than not I have had the experience of the helper that you met (rather than an angry crowd). When in doubt, I always walk up to a Mexican family or group of Mexican women, they are very helpful when needed. I’ve also been helped by plenty of men, but as a single girl, this is my go to tip for traveling in Latin American countries. Hope you keep enjoying Mexico, I went to 8 different states last year on 4 separate trips, absolutely loved it and have always felt safe :)

We were just there a week before you posted this. We encountered the jerks on the motorbikes and their scams. We did not believe them that the port we wanted to use was closed and we told them NO GRACIAS and tried to lose them. The kept blocking the road in front of us and forcing us another way until we came to their port of choice. Which was not our port of choice. Then he insisted on following us around to choose a boat. This confirmed to us that we were being scammed. We also knew the boat prices from previous research and didn’t like the gringo prices. We walked away many times and even down to another port where it was slightly cheaper than the last one but still not the advertised price at other ports. The motorcycle guy was pushy and downright dangerous. By far the worst scam we have encountered in our travels through Mexico by car which is several thousand km. We also overall loved Xochilmilco but this is a very important scam to warn folks about. Thanks for shedding light on this. We always watch your videos and they are very helpful but this time we beat you there!! Safe travels friends!

@1972xlh
@1972xlh 2 года назад
@@TheCountryCollectors thanks. It was incredibly aggressive! We lost him a few times and he came back after us! He literally kept blocking the roads and he was yelling and pointing at us and the way he wanted us to go even though we told him NO in two languages! It was unnerving. We were in our own US plated vehicle. When we parked, he parked and followed us to the boats but when we left that port he sat down on a curb and watched us and was going to leave when we left so we paid someone to watch the truck and we walked down to the next port instead of driving and parking again. We also settled on a higher rate than we should have for the boat, but really just wanted to salvage what was left of the day. We also didn’t want to be followed and harassed by the man on the motorbike any further. We have a dash cam which was malfunctioning but it’s appearance did not seem to deter him or his hijacking of our route. CDMX traffic is a nightmare without all these issues added to the mix. But this experience would definitely discourage me from driving in the city again. I would recommend folks to take a cab or Uber around here instead.

This is Paul.... and Gloria in Oaxaca. We've been to Xochimilco three times. We were never scammed exactly, but we did pay a little bit more than we should have; luckily, each time we were on a tour, which included the trajineras. We had a great time, each time. It was a lot of fun. The first time we went was in 2004 & everything cost a little less. The last time we went was in March of this year. Again, we were on a tour, but we still got a little overcharged on food and mariachis. Fortunately, other people we were with, absorbed most of the cost. Once back at the dock we couldn't help, but notice the big sign with the posted prices, 500 pesos for the boats and prices for food and mariachis too. That's how we know we were overcharged on the food.

Honestly, this video gave me so much relief. I watch travel videos with anxiety because they all present the rosiest picture and I spend the whole time wondering what the real truth is. Like was that really the 99th "great meal" in a row? Anyone who has traveled a lot knows all kinds of bad things happen. Not usually due to bad people, but things go wrong. We get on the wrong bus. We have a bad meal or food poisoning. The beautiful thing about it is that most negative experiences end up delivering a rich experience that you wouldn't trade, like meeting David, if you could go back and get it right. The full thrill and joy of travel can't be realized without negative experiences. So, this video was helpful and refreshing. So glad you guys are safe and moving on with your usual graceful perspective. Thank you.

I'm from Guadalajara, I had visited Xochimilco 8 years ago and all I can say is that I TOTALLY understand you guys for what you've been through, couldn't help but getting really upset as I was hearing you. Even me, as mexican, I did not have the best experience there because of what you say, I did not ask for the price of the meals first and guess what? I ended up paying 25 USD for something that costs 5 USD or less, the meal was cold and don't get me started on drinks; but I mean, it was my first time and I was so naive. I guess the reason why there's a famous "saying" here in Mexico that directly translates to "You lack malice" is because of stuff like this and it shouldn't be that way. I appreciate you guys having a positive point of view and keeping the same love towards my country, one bad experience surely will not take down the other hundred good ones that you've had and is great that you share this with the rest of the people that want to come here, not to prevent them from coming but to keep them from those bad guys and still enjoy their vacations like they should. There are more loving and caring people than bad ones for sure. Lastly, I want to give an advice to everyone who have in plans coming to any city, especially Ciudad de Mexico: Prioritize an Uber over a yellow cab, these fellows (not everyone, but most of them) will always try to charge you more than what you should pay, and if you ever do take a yellow cab don't be afraid to bargain the cost of the ride, they rather take what you offer instead of not taking any ride. Much love from Guadalajara, loving your channel so much! ❤

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your thoughtful advice. I’m really sorry to hear that you had a tough time on your visit too. It can be such a letdown when things don’t go as planned, especially when it comes to food-25 USD for a cold meal is definitely rough! But I love that you still hold on to the positive side and recognize all the good that Mexico has to offer. We couldn’t agree more that one bad experience shouldn’t overshadow all the amazing ones. It’s great to know that there are so many loving and caring people out there, and it’s a reminder to always stay optimistic. Your advice about prioritizing Uber over yellow cabs is super helpful, especially for those visiting for the first time. It’s all about being prepared and staying aware. Thanks again for watching, sharing your story, and for the tips. Let’s keep encouraging others to experience the beauty of Mexico while staying savvy. Safe travels to you on your next adventures!

Dang! That’s crazy! We just went there yesterday! Luckily my wife did some reviews on google and we’re made aware of it. Instead of choosing to go alone we decided it was best to book with a credible group on Expedia. Which included food, unlimited drinks and bathroom for about $60 per person. The group we went on was awesome and we had a blast! On our way there we we’re approach by a few guys on bikes to informing us the Nativitas port was closed! We informed him that we already bought our ticket and he kept trying to tell us we got scammed because Nativitas port is closed! We told our Uber driver to stay the course. Totally agree with you guys that if they want more business they should just be fair with their prices. Glad you guys made it out safe and unharmed! Props to David for stepping in and helping!

That is great to hear you booked with a group and had such a nice time! Those guys need to be stopped. So many people have commented that they have done the same thing to them and either they had watched the video and knew to ignore them or had fallen victim as well. I understand they want the business at the other ports but there has to be a better way of directing traffic there.

This started to happen to us when I visited in November 2021. This is a common Xochimilco scam. I had done my research and knew that the port I was supposed to go to, and is the official one, is Nativitas. There are multiple port entries but the official one is Nativitas and the price is posted there of how much it should be per hour. Nevertheless,, we took an uber and the uber diverted into another port entry after following motorcycle "official" looking guys that said they knew the way. We were told the roads were closed and that we could not get to Nativitas. I could see on the uber app the driver was no longer following the Nativitas route. Because I had done my research and read about this scam, I argued with the uber driver to drop me off as close as possible to Natiivitas so he diverted after i refused to get out of the car. Funnily enough, he was able to drop us off to Nativitas after I refused to get off in the other port, and I did not tip him because he lied to me. We were also given buckets of drinks when we got on our trajinera. We were told that what we would consume from the buckets we would pay when the ride was over. I think this is pretty standard but I do think could catch you by surprise if you just drink the drinks without asking the price. Xochimilco is absolutely beautiful and a UNESCO world heritage site, I highly recommend people visit, just do your research, always ask for price, and do not let your driver drop you off anywhere but Nativitas!! Even if it is an uber or cab, argue that you want to get dropped off as close to Nativitas if you are told that the road or port is "closed."
@TheCountryCollectors
@TheCountryCollectors 2 года назад
Wow. You were very smart to stay on course. Good on you! Yes.. this is all great information. If she would have explained to us about the bucket and not said it was included - there would not have been an issue. I honestly was thinking how weird it was to be included but since she said it twice - we didn't ask again. Maybe they want you to think that so you drink more and then at the end you will have to pay for the whole bucket? .. Who knows.. But it is good to put this information out there to help others!

@@TheCountryCollectors, I am so sorry this happened to you. I remember being a little scared when our driver and motorcycle guys told us we had "arrived,"the location was a little isolated, and I definitely watched too many Mexican novelas growing up and knew that entry could not be it lol. But I just mustered the courage to say that was not what I wanted and I even mentioned I would walk if I had to to in order to make it to Nativitas because of what I had read. If what they said was true then I would walk lol; but the truth came out and nothing was closed!! Y'all were great friends to your friend that was assaulted. Yes, I think the buckets are definitely enticing and will tempt people to drink. We only had a couple of beers and paid at the end. We had an amazing boat steerer named Diego who explained quite a bit, he even took us to a more "calm" canal so we could contrast the busy/party canals vs the serene canals that let you appreciate the architecture/nature of this amazing water system. Xochimilco has hundreds if not thousands of canals. If anybody is in Nativitas, try seeing if Diego is around (only speaks Spanish), he was great, he even told us tidbits of the local/tourist culture (he even told us scamming tidbits to avoid lol). I was approached by a true ministry of tourism guide who explained to me the official pricing and then he led me to the boats where we met Diego. Tip him well, he is an older gentleman, and steering the canals is all manual labor and not easy work!

Hi You Two…Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I think it’s very important to “keep things real”-the good, bad, and the ugly. My husband, sister in law, and myself went to Xochimilco last December. We had a blast but it definitely is a place you can get scammed in terms of all the “extras” that they try and throw on to your trip. We were fortunate to have had a really positive time but I can see how quickly things could go South if you’re not really careful. You did the best you could under a very trying time. Am so glad you had such wonderful good Samaritan’s at the end. What a blessing! The cab driver being part of the scam reminds me of times we had in Morocco when friends and family are part of getting you derailed. They are all in it together; everyone trying to make a buck which is understandable but hard for tourists. I always appreciate your respect for the culture you are in and your obvious love of México which I am in total agreement. Things happen anywhere; there are always bad people, as you said. The important thing is not letting it affect your overall appreciation of the country which clearly it hasn’t and to remain sharp and savvy wherever you travel.

Nobody better than a Mexican mother! Awesome this family befriended you. But the $10 shots reminded me of the lesson I learned back in the 1980s. Our family of four stopped for tacos and Coca Colas--we were hot from walking all over town, and had several Coca Colas each. Then were charged $3 per drink because we had not asked up front. Paid about $12 for Coca Colas and $4 for tacos! Since then, I ask!

Your friend from Spain should have told the police he wanted to "denunciar" or press charges for the assault. Also a complaint should be made to the PROFECO which is Mexico's consumer protection agency. I watched a video from another traveler who experienced the exact same scam for this particular boat dock at Xochimilco....I'll try and find it and post it. Thanks for posting because this will help to root out the bad from the good. And you're right, this crap happens all over the world and it should be exposed and disseminated so that the authorities are made aware and take action.

¡Saludos! I am Elaine and a recently retired teacher (46 years in the Spanish language classroom in the US). I have made many trips to Mexico and Spain with and without students. 30 years ago I was on a 10 day trip to Mexico with 10 female students and 3 chaperones. A trip to Xochimilco was included in the excursion which occurred on a Sunday. The day before the excursion, our currier told me to order lunches “to go” for our excursion from our hotel for the next day, which I did. We traveled by bus from our hotel directly to Xochimilco (which is actually a national park) without any problems. We visited Mexico at the end of June. In those days there were a lot less scams going on. In my opinion, we were the only Americans visiting Xochimilco that afternoon. We spent more or less 2 1/2hours just floating the canals and admiring the Mexican family’s enjoying the day. Seemed that every Mexican family had a member of the family who played the guitar. Got some very impressive photographs of some beautiful children enjoying the afternoon with their parents. I made posters of these photos to display in my classroom. There were some women selling flowers, but nothing of what you unfortunately had to endure. I have since then visited other states of Mexico, and I usually travel alone. What I did like about Mexico in the past was that Mexico had an innocence and was less sophisticated than Spain. I am glad that I was able to visit Xochimilco when I did. Except for Barcelona and the areas in Andalucía where the Brits vacation, none of what you have experienced in Xochimilco exists in Spain. I have just discovered your channel. Hope to vicariously travel with you again in the future. De Elaine la profe en NJ

Just consider, they are there to run their business and obviously to make money, in a way they felt insulted when you friend told them, bottle of water cost .50 cts. usd across street. When doing negotiations with vendors, don’t get to friendly, they used it for their interest. They intended to be friendly, pleasant and willing to go extra mile but… expect something in return. Being Mexican American also have it experienced. Now strictly business talking when travel. Unfortunately, these scammers are everywhere and they are cancer in any society, specially in Mexico where it finally feels like we are getting over a lot of stigmas from the past. I am Mexican too but I live in the US, and every time I go back to visit I too need to be aware of them and be careful. A couple of years ago I did go to Xochimilco with my family on a Wednesday afternoon, and there was not a whole lot of people there as there is on weekends. Something didn't feel right with me and after traveling across the city to get there, I decided to turn around and walk away, luckily I was driving a rental, so it was not a big problem for me. Sometimes, you get the feeling that something is not right and just try again some other time. I am still yet to visit, but one these days I will try again! Love your RU-vid channel, I follow you consistently, please keep up the channel it is fantastic!

Since you shared your experience, this could save so many people from a bad situation. Not just in Mexico but all over! We are headed to Puerto next week and are soooo excited to go back. Thanks for all that you do! Way to go Adam standing up for your friend when you definitely were outnumbered. Says a lot about you and your character. God bless you guys in your travels and keep sharing!!

That’s what we hope for! Not to scare people or say anything negative - just to warn people. We have had handfuls to people blame us and say it was all our fault that this happened - which I don’t agree with at all. This happens to locals and seasoned travelers. The scammers are so good at making you feel like they are helping you and not taking advantage of you. They are professionals. And after being here for so long and not encountering any such scams you do tend to be a bit more trusting than maybe you should be… but lesson learned! Now we all know what to look out for! 😃 Thanks for watching and for your support!

Hi Adam and Heidi, so sorry you went through. We have home in Xochimilco, this is a common experience if you do not research. Arrange reliable transport there before ANYTHING else. I would warn you never to hale cabs from the street. Use a taxi stand, it is infinitely safer. You would have had an honest driver from the start.

IDEA: Perhaps VIDEO asking them the price and them AGREEING to the price up front might help ? But I say buy or accept NOTHING from them and bring your own ! KUDOS. to DAVID 💪 ! Thank God you had a fluent Spanish-speaker involved as they probably would have lied and escalated the situation ! keep these HONEST videos coming too. ❤

It’s a tourist trap. One of the things that you probably want to experience but knowing when you go in that it’s overpriced. But, what you experienced was a full blown scam. I’m glad it turned out alright. David and his mom sound like angels.

I don't know what it is with uber/cabs not wanting to go to Xochimilco - I had trouble getting there and back too. I had a tour booked, so there wasn't any problem trying to scam me. Living in Mazatlán I always ask prices of things - I've had cab drivers try to scam me twice. ¡Hola, yo vivo aqui! Sorry you had problems - Xochimilco is usually a fun experience (as are the pulquerias afterwards). And thanks for doing a video about it (especially with the footage of the shove to show you weren't exaggerating). Not everything is sunshine and lolipops; but that's true about any place you go. People need to be aware, and if you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach - walk away.

That's what I was gonna ask..why don't uber drivers want to go there?? Since it's kinda far it will be good money for them.
@bjones9942

@@pumpkin_it_slawson3588 I was at Chapultapec Park and TWO uber drivers accepted, then cancelled the ride after 20-30 minutes. The third one actually showed up and took us there. Then after the tour, we had trouble getting back - the tour guide even tried to help. We wound up sharing a cab with other people from the tour as only one cab in 45 minutes stopped for us (and no ubers accepted). I would have been happy taking the subway - but it doesn't go there. Next time I'm figuring out the buses!

@@bjones9942 wow ..like is xochimilco in a bad part of town? Maybe the uber drivers know something we don't know. Or is it difficult to get there or what ??😵‍💫😵‍💫🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
@bjones9942
@bjones9942 2 года назад
@@pumpkin_it_slawson3588 No, it's not really a bad part of town. I think it's because it's a long drive - although plenty of Uber drivers will be happy to take you to the airport, and that's not close either (especially the new one). Uber drivers cancelling (after 20+ minutes) happens to me a LOT, which is why I usually take public transportation when possible.
