90% is in the gearing, but I cannot find exact info on what the reverse and 1st gear ratios were.

Ron, hi can you remember spraying the clutch plates with the fire extinguisher, was taught that at Borden. Stopped it sticking. My instructor made me learn to drive with out the clutch. Good job he did, had to drive from some where back to Lippstast when I picked up a " new one " . Then took it back the next day for repair . Loved driving it, made those German " Woofers " gravel lorries move out of the way. 😀!

Yes Ron, that and the old AEC, we were always recovering them .We had a Leyland Martin, I think that had the B81 engine as well Really slow ,always changing from one gear range to another. The crane was perfect, but I preferd the Scamel for towing .John .

My grandad used to drive one in that colour in Cyprus in 1963 when he was in reme but he was TA he towed a dyson trailer carrying a Fowler bulldozer and also recovered a compressor that toppled over and a series 2 Land Rover green jackets crashed into a riverine he also drove a pioneer with cloth doors 1939 one but it was a wreck and they left it on a mountain.

Those "boxes" that were pulled are Ex Army Stores Binner trailers...used to be fitted out with racks of Thomas Bins containing spare parts and nuts and bolts etc for the maint and repair of vehicles. LADs of the REME had them.

Just been watching some old training films about these tank recovery vehicles from the 2nd World War. Driving at speed over very uneven ground: Just amazing! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XvgkqdQvqq8.html Watching how these beasts were used 'in anger' is quite something. Just think about taking the kids to school in THAT :-). All those mums in their 'Chelsea Tractors,' ? Totally up-staged!

Did anyone ever match a Scammell against a Diamond T?
@JackComber1

Well the Diamond T has more pulling power on the tarmac but the scammell has much better off road recovery skills than the T
