Another job well done by Asus on a $4300 Laptop. What more can be said?
If you are getting high temps on some P cores compared to others (10*C difference or higher under load) then you definitely have a crappy paste job done by the manufacturer.
My default Cinebench R23 Score before the repaste was 26.6K
After repaste we reached 31.8k
Worth it? I would say so.
Repasted with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme (same paste used by Asus).

For the people who will attempt this: After you do this, the first boot will take like 1-2 min. Your keyboard will continue to flash and eventually you will hear the asus boot logo then screen boots up. Be sure to plug in the charger! Thanks @noyjr9492

+1 - you need OEM POWER BRICK for that boot, the official 330W one. (g18 2024) Laptop wont boot from thunderbolt power after that for the first time. I had mini hearth stroke until i figured that out :)

I was at just 20k with an i9 13980HX, the metal was so poorly applied that i had a delta of 24 degrees celcius between my hottest and coolest core (96 vs 72). After reapplying the metal, the laptop now hits 160W on bursts as expected.

Congratulations on the video. About 5 months ago I was searching like crazy all over the Internet for people like you and finally I found them. You have no idea how hard I searched for a video like yours, so congratulations once again. Now I want to tell you that liquid metal actually works a miracle on notebooks. I have a Lenovo Legion 5i gen 5, the model with i7-10750h and RTX2060, with liquid metal it is as strong as the Legion with an RTX4060. It's unbelievable, when I say this people don't believe it because it's too good to be true. I had to remove the liquid metal because, as my notebook did not come with liquid metal from the factory, it is not prepared to walk around with something that could run all over the motherboard, thus ruining the notebook. That's why I was looking for videos like yours, to see how manufacturers applied this solution and finally I managed to see it. A simple foam to contain the liquid metal, a layer of nickel and no thermal pads. I'm now going to build this solution for my Lenovo Legion 5i and transform it into a monster that goes head to head with today's models.

I just got the time today to reapply the liquid metal. And when i say its bad its realllly bad. My chip barely had any liquid metal and everything spilled on the side from asus.. the NVIDIA marked on my heat sink as it gets too hot when gaming and with barely any liquid metal on it. I suggest everyone having bad temps to repaste theirs while its not too late and while there are no permanent damages.

Hey it was similar for me too. The gpu had almost none. Cpu was like 30% covered. I didnt add any liquid metal I have used what Asus spilled on sides on dies and heatsinks and cleaned the rest... yeah it was that much. Gpu printing was on heatsink and it was darkish colour both heatsink and die. I may have broken the warranty but dont care to be honest, this is my work/home laptop and I think I have saved the laptop in the long run.

Thank you for this video. After ASUS RMA'd my SCAR 16 4080 with a replacement motherboard (unit failed to power on or charge), I had issues with the laptop shutting down when running intensive games. I opened her up yesterday and found that both cpu and gpu had gaps of no liquid metal applied. It had a grey/black tint in that area. I reapplied LM on both the chip and the heat sink.... been running smooth with no shut downs or notable throttling.

you repasted the LM on the scar 17 with the ryzen7945 and the temps were still insane ? what was your c23 scores like and have u tried thermal limiting it in bios to like 95 c instead of 100c cause their designed to turbo to thermal limit then trottle, im thinking of getting the scar 17 or 18 was considering thermal limiting the ryzen to 95 but cant find any benchmarks with it done. would u trade ur 17 for the 18 ? because it seems that at 75 wats the multicore scaores of the ryzen is the same as the i9 at 150w and at 75 wats the ryzen would run cool
@lurondile
@lurondile 8 месяцев назад
@ItIsWhatItIsUncut I had 3 choices when I decided to buy a laptop: 1) Scar 17 ryzen 9 7945hx + rtx 4090 + 1440p screen 2) Scar 18, same specs, but screen is a bit better 3) ryzen duo I've decided to buy Scar 17 because it's cheaper and also not as big as Scar 18 and more powerful than asus Duo. But you see, no matter what model you choose, they have the same problems: 1) Buggy soft - if you want the latest nvidia and AMD drivers installed (not original ones from asus), you will face bugs 2) Asus updates original drivers from AMD and nvidia for a laptop rarely, so you will be forced to use old nvidia and AMD drivers 3) Bad tempts on processor, my laptop 100% in good condition but because of ryzen 9, I can't play at balanced mode, It just turns off from time to time because of overheating. If you repaste liquid metal, it won't help much, so the best choice here is to go and use turbo or manual mode for the best performance I haven't tried benchmarks, but if you want comparison Scar 18 is a bit more powerful than Scar 17. I don't know why, specs the same. But the difference is small.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I had no clue where my performance had gone to and my CPU would instantly spike to 95 degrees.. Throttlestop would help occassionally but i really just wanted to fix it. Upon opening there was literally no liquid metal left in the middle of the CPU.. I retook your steps and bought myself some Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and now we're back to idling below 40 degrees on normal tasks. Thanks again for showing how it's done.

Top for people who did this and didn't spill and didn't get their laptop to turn on, it just sitting there with the keyboard glowing... I thought i messed it up! But no.. hold your power button with the power cord unplugged.. it will do a cold boot and will then properly boot. It likely is a result from unplugging the battery.

Great ! Its always better to repaste even if it has Liquid Metal. Well done. I would say that it’s crazy to see this laptop has so much wasted space inside . I mean you can stuff a lot of things inside such as coins , pens, condoms inside. Look at the space around battery and that dongle which connects usb or card reader. Hilarious … in comparison MSI GT77 utilise all the available space. The new MSI HX 18 took the Scar root and has wasted space as well. Crazy

Same thing for me. I opened it, it didn't look too good, CPU was going 95+ and GPU slightly throttleing. After liquid metal ( I have on CPU only ) + thermal paste on GPU, in cinebench CPU would go only to 85C and in timespy 81-83C. For GPU scores were insane, in timespy max 70C ( absolutely madness ). However, now after 6-7 months, I'm back to throttleing and bad temps...why? no clue. ambient temperature is the same, it seems that in time it just went to shit. The only thing I'm not sure about is the VRMs + capacitors + whatever other electrical components the heatsink cools. I replaced the old "thermal goo" ( it's actually called thermal putty ) with thermal paste. In theory it should be way better, and it was, as I said, INSANE TEMPS, but now not so much. I ordered thermal putty (upsiren ux ultra or smth ) and a new thermal paste ( from upsiren also, apparently 14.8 W/mK ( vs 12.5 W/mK that thermal grizzly has ), but it'll take a while to arrive as I didn't find any locally. Once they get here, I'll clean up everything and reapply liquid metal on CPU (thermal grizzly one), upsiren paste for GPU and upsiren thermal putty for all the VRMs and stuff. Hope that will be as good as things were initially for me ( or a little bit worse, I don't mind as long as GPU is under 80 and CPU under 85-90) and last for longer than few months. Any chance to get a reply on your laptop, how are things now after 4 months or so? Thx

Legend! My laptop had a massive hotspot reaching 110 celcius.. on heavy tasks especially on stock GPU settings it could randomly go into an emergency shutoff and.. only fix was a heavy heavy down clock and hope. Did this (my first time doing liquid metal) and carefully and its amazing.. hotspot temperature is now only 4 degrees celcius above the also much lower gpu temps.. i max out at 80 celcius with no undervolt and an overclock applied even.. fans are much more silent and the shutdowns are gone! Asus does not know how to apply liquid metal.. thats for sure.

Today i changed liquid metal on my strix scar 18, on cpu side like in your chip, there was a little piece of paste missing at center, but i got paste on both dissipators chipset, the bad one applyed was on gpu side at the bottom, it was a little black like was burning, i swipe off all of it and applyed for my first time liquid metal, i got silver king paste cause from where i am it costs less and have 79W/MK ''they say that lol'' so i go for it, not was so difficult if you manage to change it in dekstops, i got 32.8 on cinebench not 34-35 unfortunately but on 10 min i got a boost up to 30.7 from lower 29s, also less temperature on GPU while gaming and a bit frames too, follow this video and ceck/change it because this is the mayor cause when a laptop stop work, i lost an asus years ago with 980m cause bad paste work, i was always hitting 100C at the time haha but i'm not was so practical at the time for change it, thanks for the video, it was really helpful Ps, i broke the sticker but i don't give a fuck, if I hadn't opened it and change paste the 4090 would have caught fire lol

After 3 years with my Asus Scar G17 from 2021, 3080 w/ Ryzen 5900hx, i finally opened it and saw it was also missing liquid metal in the middle and poorly repasted. I have been wondering why my CPU temps have been going to 97C when I first bought the laptop. I repasted it and also noticed that the paste covering the CPU part that could short circuit from liquid metal was not covered properly. I literally took pictures and have proof of it. There has been many issues with ASUS and their RMA process so I think they are doing it on purpose.

Hi! Thermal paste won't bring an improvement to your temps, Liquid Metal is considerably better. I haven't thought about using a swab with a magnet tip but I think that will cause the LM to stick to the swab and make it way harder to apply (if it will stick to the swab in the first place, haven't tried it)

Spread a thin layer on the die and a thin layer on the heatsink. Works great till this day. On my G16 (13980HX RTX 4080) it works well. My problem right now with my g18 4080/13980hx is that it scores really high(34500ish), but 4-5 cores are always throttling along with power limit and current limit throttling. I can apply pretty aggressive undervolts in xtu, -.150core, -.100 pcache, -.150ecore, -.040igpu, -.040 system agent, and the system seems stable scoring around 38000 CBr23. Yet it always thermal throttles. I’ve even dropped core ICC to intel’s recommended 215a vs stock 240a, and it still throttles. Idk what to do, I started looking into it due to a constant stutter in games. Should I repaste?

Hi, did you use normal Conductonaut or the "Extreme" ? Because I have a G14 2023 and also experiencing bad temps. Like even with CPU limit on 20W, It gets to 83C even tho I limit the temp to 83C. But my Cinebench scores are normal, Ryzen 7 7335HS scores around 13-14k. Still have warranty from Asus, should I replace it my own or from them ? I'm afraid they'll just do the same like factory settings and said its done. But last 5 months the temps were good in the low to mids 70C.
