The differences between countries when it comes to rail rules and practices interests me. I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a blanket rule about sounding a warning before level crossings in England and Wales, but there definitely is in Australia; a warning has to be sounded when approaching a crossing and a second time just before reaching the crossing, making two warnings per crossing. Also, Australia doesn't seem to have any of those points/switches/turnouts warning lights on the signals. I guess the driver is expected to just know where they're supposed to be going (although that doesn't always work out; I've heard of one case of the Ballarat train being halfway to Geelong before anyone noticed it was on the wrong track, and for reference, Ballarat is West and Geelong is South)

Thanks for your comment. We are advised by our union (ASLEF) to use both tones for the safety of those using the crossing. Don is one of the drivers who chooses not to take their advice.

Hiya, 1. Inverted yellow triangles are to warn drivers of upcoming speed restrictions. They're placed at braking distance from the restriction for the heaviest train which can use the route. 2. Junction indicators - they tell us which route the train is to take ahead 3. There is no sign. The speed of the main line from Edinburgh (which joins on the right) is 30mph and this speed applies once we join it from the Scarborough line. 4. I don't know which signs you mean 5. Ground position or limit of shunt signals - Ground position signals are there to allow trains to make shunt moves to move from one line to another. Limit of shunt means stop.

Most of the the whistle signs I think relate to upcoming foot crossings, so if they are just after a level crossing this might just be coincidence - there is another foot crossing coming up after?

Signalboxes clear the relevant signals to allow trains to depart and the guard on the train tells the driver to proceed. Most stations will have signals before and after, sometimes the distance will be less close to the station than busy areas

Only Mk5s and class 68s are planned to run on the Scarborough route and they will have to stick to the lower speeds.

But as the line to Hull has more traffic, it would probably be electrifyed first.

Signs aren't always provided. I don't think it would have been deemed necessary for a sign there since the only main route from the following signal is via the 15mph points, so the likelihood of getting to anywhere near 40mph is zero.

I have asked the same question. It isn't even over the bridge. Doesn't cause any problems though, to be fair. Malton is the problem.

Maybe to save costs because you need 2 switches less that way.

I do believe it's due to the embankment on the left hand side at that point not being strong enough to hold the track without the possibility of it slipping away

The yellow figure? You mean the speed limit in the upside-down triangle? It's basically for trains using a different line and switching onto said different line, as it's typically a slower approach due to the possibility of a derailment. And the station is Malton.

No. 185s are restricted to the lower speeds. Kmh is not used on the wider national rail network. You are right that it is used in very few isolated areas but even new ETCS installations use MPH

It used to have an island platform as well, but no footbridge - a gangway was laid across the gap between the platforms between trains, quite primitive. The current solution is... cheap!

Upcoming speed restriction of 20mph. These signs are known as Morpeth Boards, as I believe they were introduced as a result of incidents at the infamous curve at Morpeth on the east coast mainline.

Whistle boards are normally for foot crossings. User Worked Crossings require the user to get permission to cross from the signaller, so there shouldn't be a train approaching when people are using them.

The turntable at Scarborough is still there. Just before the 2 min mark, on the right and just before the class 68 passes.

@@josephkarl2061 it'll probably happen one day in the not so distant future. It causes a fair number of delays at the moment.

I did a bit of research after you posted this - Apparently Malton used to be a significantly larger station and did have two through platforms, however only one could be used at any one time anyway - the method of getting to the island platform from the station building and current platform was by the use of a 'swing bridge' across the track from platform 1 to the island.

Not with the current timetable.

That's slightly more than Barcelona, Spain which has 640mm of rain per year. West Yorkshire is east of the Pennines and is one of the drier parts of the country. If you want rain come to Tokyo, it has 1500+ mm's of rain annually. Yet the Japanese think of England as that rainy country. Educate thisen, lad!
