Join this brand new Class 68 with Mk5A coaches on it run from Scarborough. As it ran on the Up Main through Colton Junction, I’ve included that too. Plenty of delightful countryside and if you like big diesels, you’ll love the soundtrack too.

Don - I’ve been watching your videos from Australia for months now - and have to say they are the best cab view vids on YT. Your added comments on the drivers’ skills and processes and meticulous historical research are what sets them apart. I love local hauled trains - I used to love the 50s and 47s that dragged the Hereford-London route which was my local line - and so this brought back happy memories. Thanks for all your efforts in making such quality experiences - like many I’m very impressed - and grateful.

I love the response time on this Diesel engine Don. You can hear the clicks on the notches on the throttle and the instant speed at which the motor responds. What a ride.

@@doncoffey5820 There was a 68 stopped just short of Batley signal box at the new signal on the down line the other day. Quite a sound as she opened up. Think there may have been an axle counter failure in the tunnel so it was there a while.

Really nice to see the 68 in active service. That is one good looking machine. Your on-screen comments/information are as good as gold as always. Gives usa wider view of the work of a train driver, and he has the best view of any office in the world. Prove me wrong!

Fantastic video on a mostly familiar line. Glad the Class 68/Mk5A sets are keeping the loco hauled action alive. Like the 125 HST's, what I consider 'proper trains', it makes the journey that bit more special in my humble opinion. Thanks for the informative videos. 👍

As usual, Don, another interesting and informative video. It is a privilege to be able to sit in the cab and see so much. It is good that people all over the world can see parts of my beautiful native county of Yorkshire. You mentioned the word “riding”, it simply means a third, hence the three tidings. (Not counting Winifred Holtby’s South Riding!)

I was born, raised and still live in Scarborough so I know the station and it's surrounding area very well, but it has changed so much since my childhood days sat on Westwood wall opposite Falsgrave signal box watching the excursion trains come in and the daily goods coming out of Falsgrave tunnel...now long gone.

A classic, Don. Thanks a lot. I'd never done Scarborough-York, and York-Leeds the other way, in the dark behind Duchess of Hamilton in January 1984, on the return from a special Settle-Carlisle day excursion. York-London was diesel-hauled. What did surprise me was the time from York to Leeds. Unless I worked it out incorrectly it was 31 mins. The best run I ever had was behind Leander in 31 mins and that had 11 coaches. I would have thought a 68 with 5 coaches would have been much faster.

I've travelled on one of these 68s and the acceleration from a standing start is incredible, I'd no idea they were Cat Powered, I've driven 2 Cat Powered Foden 8 Wheeled lorries which were outstanding to drive and totally reliable, I did over 500,000 miles in those two trucks with no engine problems whatsoever so it's no wonder they use CAT engines in these.

@davidellis279
@davidellis279 4 года назад
Don Coffey. Hi Don, if you thought the Gardner 180s were slow you should have tried the 200 and 230 Turbo Gardners running at 30 tonne gross in the Buxton Hills. They were a joke and downright dangerous because other trucks were constantly trying to overtake me because of the slow progress I was making, the Rolls 280 Fodens were brilliant until CAT came on the scene and evened things up a little.

Thank you Sir, for posting this awesome video. I come from Germany and therefore, being a country of mostly electric trains, we no longer have the pleasure to listen to diesel power on rails. Railways in England, for me that is mostly the Heathrow Express to London, a nice EMU but nothing to be compred with these trains. Keep on riding and filming and thanks again

Thats very kind thank you. I spent much time in Germany before I joined the railway. I worked for a company in Bad Camberg.

We still have the Br218's thrashing through Baden-Württemberg, which make a nice change from the (admittedly very nice) Electric units that provide much of the services here.

I'm a loco driver in Hungary, and I've always dreamt of driving these British locos. My dream is halfway through because my company owns old BR Class 86 and Class 56 locos that I get to drive, however, I'm still wondering if I could get a job as a driver in England. Great video anyway, and very informative!

Put it this way, the train companies can’t get enough drivers. If you look at the local operating company at the area you like, you can register with them. Don’t bother with the national operators as they rarely start new intake drivers, they just cherry pick experienced drivers.

Had a surprise run on this beauty last week on the Newcastle run from Liverpool Lime Street, the sound from the engine is chest-shaking and the ride is incredibly smooth. What a fantastic diesel!

You sure it was a Newcastle run? I think a few of the new 802s have been up there in revenue service.

Another great video. The trip is like two lines in one with equally lovely scenery. The first half has a completely different character to the second half. The loco looks tough and sounds it too. Cheers.

Thanks Pauline. I hope it doesn’t sound patronising but I’m really pleased more ladies are following the channel. Yes, the changes in scenery between many of the videos is remarkable.

Not patronising at all. I am not a hard core railway enthusiast but certainly appreciate machinery, history and the experience of travelling in a cab through a country I am unlikely to get the chance to visit. Thank you.

Hmm, its a sore point John. They promise the earth in a run up to an election then pull 70% afterwards. It takes 3 steps forward and 2 back.

Wow , nothing like a new train , the sound of that engine , music to the ears . One thing that seems to be forgotten is the signalling technology , without it ,no railway can run . If you have a look at signalling at Waterloo at it's busiest , mind boggling stuff . They deserve a bloody medal that lot ! Great vid, Don.

We get some fancy signalling in some locations but for now those old semaphores are sufficient out there.

Just found this. Sheer brilliance. Thank you. Off to watch the back catalogue. One interesting observation. I haven't driven a train for near on 20 years but instantly found myself resetting the DVD (Vacma peddle is Eurotunnel version) with my right foot. Still got it though!
