While boondocking solo I man appears at my door. This was the scariest thing that has happened to me after 7 years as a full-time RVer. I was legitimately terrified. Is this making me quit RV life?

Look up a North American Arms .22 firearm, it’s the smallest simplest firearm that you can buy, literally about the size of a set of car keys. You can hide it in the palm of your hand, accuracy sucks beyond the distance you could throw something so close range only. Don’t like guns, mace or bear spray works. And WHY did you open your door? Open a window to speak to a stranger. And never ever be afraid of nicely saying with a smile, “You are making me uncomfortable, please leave.” If they persist, “I asked you to leave, and you haven’t. I’m armed (or capable of defending myself) and I’d like to remind you that medical care is over an hour away and you’ll probably be gone before paramedics can reach you.” Optional, “Thank you and have a good day. 😊”

I am 100% on your side, and I hope that you aren't still beating yourself up over this. I know that you have to be careful and keep yourself safe and all that, but you should have an expectation of being left alone! You shouldn't NEED to put out 2 chairs and lock yourself up in your airstream like a prisoner. It's your RIGHT to be safe and free! I think you handled it the way you should have, and I'm glad to hear that you have a means of defending yourself.

Yes, anyone can be attacked anywhere anytime, but most attackers typically prefer easy targets. The best protection I ever had was a cold attitude toward overly friendly men and a large dog with a hard stare. Her leash has an instant-release trigger on the handle that separated it from her collar with the press of a lever, something I was quick to mention in "casual" conversation. My good girl was a trained security dog who knew she was "on duty" when Mama gave her the command. I'm convinced she saved my life several times and I'd give literally anything to have her back beside me, dropping a slobbery tennis ball in my lap and going crazy at the sight of a Dairy Queen (we did love our ice cream).

I think you are right about not living in fear. It can lead to paranoia. Also, it can be reflected in body language and conveyed to potential predators. In nature, predators are attuned to such displays of weakness as an opportunity. We see this early with high school bullies. "Walk tall and carry a big stick."

There is no law that says you must be polite to uninvited strangers who come to your door or approach you. I keep all strangers several arm lengths away so I have time to react. Recently I had to raise my arms in the stop command when I creeper kept edging towards me while talking at me. He kept insisting I accept his free book to me that I told him I did not want. My other hand was on my pepper spray which is always displayed when out and about. I am small 5' 71yr old solo female traveler. When I raised my STOP hand and used my dog command voice of NO and displayed my pepper spray the big guy finally stopped in his tracks and backed away. I was alone in the campground at the time. I have found that attitude works on most men/people. My go to is low, firm and gives off serial killer vibes. "not one step closer' repeated over and over like a broken record without changing volume or tone kinda makes them rethink their decisions. No smiles, no how are yah, etc. Just stare and repeat. Helps to have wide unblinking eyes too. It worked on this one homeless guy bee-lining me and my RV at a gas station and suddenly after 30 seconds of this, he decides the trash can needs to be searched. Don't get me wrong, I love helping people out and I do often but this guy was swooping in the second I pulled in like a had a pot of gold or something (a giant old ass rv).

I called her to come in, fast forward 45 minutes and 2 guys are standing outside my camper wanting to know if they could come in and check it out because they were thinking about buying one just like it. I said they could look it up online, they kept talking, one put his hand on the screen door and my 130lb shepherd came from the back and let out a low growl. After backing up real quick they told me they would have a look online. I drove around the area before we left and there were no other campers there.

I completely understand. I wasn't thinking. Years ago, in college, I was living in a little house on a highway. My boyfriend was trying to sell a woody station wagon that was parked out front. He really needed the money, and that distracted my thinking about safety. A pudgy, creeper in green Dockers came to the door to ask about the vehicle. I was dressed in white cutoffs and an adorable halter top. I did NOT let him in. Like an idiot, I told him my boyfriend was away, but if he waited a moment I would get pencil and paper to write down his number. When I turned around to head back to the front door, he was standing in the kitchen just behind me. His eyes were bulged out, and he meant me harm. I got out of that with some quick thinking, but he came back, and was beating on my front door yelling, "I KNOW YOU ARE IN THERE!!" I ran out the back door through briars and fences barefooted, and straight into a stranger's front door about a half mile down the road. I was terrified he knew I was running away because of dogs barking at me. The next day, I moved back home with my parents. Lucky to be alive.

Creepers come to sticks-n-brick house too. We had a 4 bedroom, 3 bath, brick style home with a back yard, pool, spa, and dog. I worked the 3rd shift. My husband left to fill my tank while I took a shower. While I was in the shower the bathroom door opened and the hair went up on the back of my neck. I just felt something was wrong. I soaped myself up and wrapped the wash cloth around my hand as I planned an escape route. After a while, when I felt it was safe, I peeked out of the shower curtain to close and lock the bathroom door. I used the other door to get into my bedroom and dress for work. I stayed very quiet. Suddenly there was a LOUD banging on my bedroom door. I opened the door to find my husband with an axe over his shoulder and ready to swing. He asked me if I was OK, which I was. Then told me someone had broken the from door handle off and left the door open. We called the police and they were unable to locate the person. @@kwimms That is a distrustful/disrespectful comment towards my dad. : ( We (my parents and siblings) live in a Remote area of Idaho, and that the town. When you get into the mountains, it's even more remote. It's not like we ever parked in a KOA campground. And in the real wilderness...you can hear a vehicle from a distance. But sometimes vehicles break down, and someone might be hiking out, see a campsite and knock on a camper door for HELP..and not for $#$%# sugar. But too, there was always that slim chance that someone knocking might be up to no good. Better to be Prepared, than dead. My dad kept his handgun holstered and on him during the day and at night, he kept it within reach. So in the later part of an afternoon, IF anyone should knock, there might be a good chance he already took his holster off, so he would have to hold his handgun when he opened the other door. Often though, if we did get a visitor, it was usually someone who's truck we recognized...and they just stopped to say hi, before taking their load of firewood down to town. Humans are not the only thing to be careful of...a bear can rip the door off a camper. Not too long a go, this happened to a guy camping. The bear killed him. On RU-vid there is a video about this, showing the damage that bear did. So, another good reason to have 2 doors and a firearm.

I called down from the 3rd floor window to ask “Can I help you?” There was a rash of home burglaries in the area, including the 1st unit in our building a few months prior. I think they were just buzzing apartment doors hoping someone would just buzz them in, since there’s no intercom or cam on the building. But I came to the window. They made up a story about how a friend of theirs lived there. I told them everyone in the building had lived there for over ten years, and I knew them all, and that I was there all day every day and knew who was coming and who was going, and there was nobody by that name there. That told them all they needed to know, and they left. I went to a hardware store and got a sign that said “This building under surveillance at all times.” And put it inside the front gate right by the buzzer panel with double sided tape.

The perforated sheet is available in different hole sizes and staggered holes or not. I would use 18 gauge or lighter 19 gauge. This over your bug screen, and two sliding bolts 12”” from top and bottom to secure the door. If you current door frame is flimsy a new one could be fabricated out of stainless steel square tubing. So, I found a lock that is called a "Safety Gate Hook" and there is a lever that tucks in on the hook with a hole so you place a lock through it. So, no one can bust through the screen and release that hook, it's slightly heavy and well-built. I keep the key on the wall near the door. Then I can leave that room feeling safe. Several years ago my husband found a ad for a RV for sale about 1.5 hours away. We get almost to the small town my husband I asked my husband if he had the address for the RV? He said no, I’m suppose to call this number and he is taking me out to where he has the RV stored. I said let me guess he told you to bring cash, hubby said yep, thankfully when I called the telephone number he never would pick up. I told my husband I believe it was a set up for you to be robbed. It was a quiet 1.5 hr ride home, either my husband was mad he didn’t get to see the RV or that he knew I was right.

You were not wrong to be on the defense. I had a guy come up to me in a Walmart parking lot once, even though there were other people around. He was asking if I could help him, I was alone. I was just putting the cart away in the corral and was able to make it in my car and immediately locked the doors before he came right up to my window asking for help. I told him I couldn’t help and immediately drove away. He looked creepy and frowned as soon as he saw me lock the doors. I have never felt so scared before. I know exactly how you must have felt. I know someone who got leered at by some guys in a truck as she was putting her kid into her car. Her gut feeling was really bad so she immediately abandoned her cart and her car, snatched up her kid and ran back into the store. Some employees waited with her and then escorted her out. I'm so thankful they took her seriously. The guys got caught later for trafficking. I thought she was genius because I think I would've jumped in the car in which case they can just follow you

Definitely shady AF. We used to use simple hook and eyes to secure our camper screen door, one at the top, one at the bottom, finding that it made it much more secure with 2 points rather than only 1 by the lock mechanism. The safety lies in allowing you time to get a bigger weapon and/or make a call for help.

Glad you took care of the guy with your attitude and indication that you were ready to meet force with some type of force. As for locking the screen door, you might be able to accomplish it at the hinges rather than the lock by pinning them together. You might be able to get a welder to tack weld a small piece of aluminum tubbing of equal length to each side of your hinges so that when closed you could put something like a large nail into both when lined up making the hinges unable to open. I would do this on both so as to minimize the flexing of the frame. The same technique can be applied to the door and the door frame along the edges above and below the door handle about a foot in each direction and would only need to be about 4” - 6” long for a nail on a rod with a loop bent to serve as a pull. Of course, the problem with securing your screen door is that when an attempt to enter fails to open it, a violent person could simply begin tearing the screen and middle frame out, but that would be valuable time for you to get to your gun (I hope you have trained with a hand gun or a tactical shotgun). A second thought that I had to repel someone from your front door with it opened or closed might be to have a can of Bear Spray rigged to fit against an aperture through your wall that might even have a manifold with a few openings aimed at the correct angle so as when you sprayed it with creat a cloud that hits an attacker from the waist to above a 6’-6” hight man to ensure that you get a good coverage on him repulsing him and giving pause to anyone with him. And you would require a large spray container holding multiple uses. Hope these are helpful. Be safe. The old professor Live free or die!!! My wife's family, her father was career Air Force, toured Europe for 45 days in a VW bus. When they returned home in 1959 he bought a pick up and a slide in camper. They would not use any campgrounds or state parks, parking lots, gas stations, even just wide spots on the road . Their first trip they stopped on a "Wide spot", late at night and went to sleep, her little sister was already asleep. Later, little sister work up, grabbed her sister and in a loud whisper said, "There's a shadow on the door, someone looking in!!!!" She woke her father while getting a skillet out of the stove, he grabbed his " little friend", they are all wisperring, scared to death...... Her father crep to the door, butt naked..... threw the door open... The shadow was a no parking sign! We laughed about that for years!
