Scarlet Jaboticaba (Plinia escarlate) is an easy to grow fruit tree for containers or in the ground! Eat the fruit ASAP! #fruit #fruits #jaboticaba #container #food #brazil
Many people say it tastes like a grape, but with so many different cultivars the taste is all over the place. This one is unique and doesn’t taste like grape at all.

Looks good! I just bought a small one. How old is your plant?

This species is an early bearing tree for sure - they start bearing at about age 3. Mine is age 6 or 7 and it’s been fruitinby for about four years now.

This one can come true from seed. It is a very early bearer, so in about three years.

Describe the taste please 😢

They have a unique taste of their own but the closest comparison is a Concord grape, though that’s normal jaboticaba. Escalarte is sweeter imho

@@FancyPlants In Brazil we use the word “Tree”when we want to be formal. But we commonly use the word “Foot” . Like, thats a foot of Jabuticaba Lol … we pronounce it as (Juh-boo-tee-kahba)

Bet you said a bad word or ten when you discovered you got robbed. Any fruit protection ideas for the next crop?
@FancyPlants

Haha, you bet I did! For other fruit are use strawberry containers that I cut slits in and they fit around most fruit. I may try it on this as well, but as the chunks get bigger, it’s basically me putting them in areas that squirrels and rats don’t tend to go. Do you use anything?

@@FancyPlants I had squirrels steal my first ripe lemon guava, so I actually moved the plant into the greenhouse for the rest of them to ripen. The extra heat actually helped ripen them faster and maybe even made them sweeter, and no robbers inside. I have an Olympian fig planted in the ground in the backyard, and when the figs were starting to get ripe I had one get pecked by some bird, so I wrapped the rest loosely with foil, which seemed to hide them well enough and still let them ripen. Still learning new tricks, though.

@@EastsideGardening for bigger fruits, or for things that bloom on the trunks, try the strawberry container. It’s been a lifesaver. But if it gets too hot in the summers, it can actually make the fruit kind of weird (small and ripen too early). I’m gonna try foil this year to scare some of the rats off. It helps keep them off our papaya trunk - they kept stopping off.

@@FancyPlants thanks for the tip about the plastic fruit container doubling as a critter forcefield. Will have to try it out!

The one here is a 15 gallon and fruiting prolifically but a 20-25 gallon, like a half wine barrel would be ideal when it’s mature.

This particular one, you can get seeds in about three years and the perfect conditions. We’re at some of the other species take much longer, but this is a very quick one.

Green Dreams located in North Tampa or you can buy on line they have quite varieties . I’ve purchased lots of from them. Exactly same them happened to me this year every time the tree was loaded in the morning they wore all eaten and the greens on the ground! I almost had a heart attack 😮 We set up a camera and it’s a racon and part is my fault because I use composting which I’ve stopped . but on purpose I’ve left food scraps on my screen lanai and he doesn’t come in . I know people that have the jabuticaba by the pool where is screen so that’s what I’ll have to build this year to protect my fruit trees
