I'm Japanese and love military, so I'll explain. One of the reasons Japan is developing railguns is to counter China's large stock of IRBMs and HGVs. The Ministry of Defense believes that "to intercept HGVs, it is important for the interceptor to also head to the rendezvous point at hypersonic speeds," and a railgun with a long range and the ability to shoot continuously is the perfect solution. Although it is not shown in the video, research is also being done on vehicle-mounted railguns, and they are being considered for the defense of air bases and ports. And as you may have noticed if you watch the video, Japan's railguns are smaller than those being researched in the United States and other countries. The caliber is about 40mm, which reduces the range and power, but it has succeeded in reducing the wear on the barrel and the power required. And this is enough for anti-aircraft use. Research is still ongoing, but practical application may not be that far away. I wrote this sentence using Google Translate, so I'm sorry if it's difficult to read.

Japan and the United Kingdom, should send a message to the Americans to stop making so much fucking noise. I have heard stories coming out of Japan about them being disrupted by Americans miss-behaving there (drunk, crashing aircraft, making noise etc). Over here in the East of the UK, where I have live; the aircraft noise has made our lives utter Hell. I have no issue with America flying aircraft and working with us as alley, but I just want them to fly over the god damn ocean and try and keep the noise down!

@@thevikingwarrior -- _this_ American has been to Japan many times, not to mention all over Europe, throughout the UK, etc. Are there some Americans who misbehave while overseas? Sure. The same goes for Brits, Aussies, Germans, et al -- whom I have personally witnessed being loud, drunken idiots -- especially in places like Amsterdam and Bangkok. In Japan? Not so much. Most Americans (and Brits, et al) are fairly quiet and respectful there. As for aircraft noise: all jets are pretty similar when it comes to the noise levels, and let's not forget that the jet engine was a British invention, so you can thank your fellow Briton Frank Whittle for the noise. The RAF has over 300 jets and nearly as many helis, so it's not like if the yanks left everything would be peaceful in the skies over Britain.

The Zumwalt class destroyer (DDG 1000) was specifically design for inclusion of railguns. However, there have been so many issues with railguns and other issues that the initial plan for 32 Zumwalt class ships was cut to just 3 before the program was cancelled. Of the three existing Zumwalt class ships, NONE are planned to actually have a railgun installed. In addition, the projectile cost estimate was of $100,000 EACH. If that's not bad enough, the plasma generated by abruptly discharging so much power eroded the 'barrel' too quickly to warrant its implementation. As neat as it sounds, railguns will rake far longer to become operational in field than, say, MEGAwatt class lasers.

Railguns on Military ships we will likely see Modern Battleship return armed with Railguns instead of ordinary one.
@LoserInChief
@LoserInChief Месяц назад
Guided missiles and aircraft will always be more flexible and have greater range than a fixed gun on a slow ship. Battleships were obsolete relics almost 100 years ago, Pearl Harbor proved that. There will never be another ship that uses gun turrets as its primary firepower, let alone a massive battleship, useless for anything else. Modern navies use multi-role vessels, and have layered defenses.
@Taira-no_Noritune
@Taira-no_Noritune Месяц назад
@@LoserInChief 1) Pearl Harbour was meant like political trap so that US can start war with Japan without being one declaring it. Battleships in PH were just sactifices for that provocation. 2) Almost all airplane battleship kills in WW2 happened in situations, where one side had major or total air superiority. 3) To sink Tirpitz, Brits needed more than 5 operations and over 800 tons of bombs total to sink 4) Sinking Yamato took fighter wings of 4 US aircraft carriers, so it was 1 vs 4 fight. Musashi perished in a fight with fighter wings from 5 carriers. Real reason why battleships failed in WW2 was not that they were obsolete, but because fleet commanders either used their battleships incorrectly or acted indecisive trying to "spare them for the final battle", hiding in fjords or lagoons and doing other stuff. In other words purely human factor.
@LoserInChief
@LoserInChief Месяц назад
@@Taira-no_Noritune And yet, no navy has used a Battleship in active duty in decades, nor are any planned to be built. None of what you said changes that, or the fact that BB are not a valuable asset in a modern navy, railguns or no.
@Taira-no_Noritune
@Taira-no_Noritune Месяц назад
@@LoserInChiefIt had more to do with politics. Before crisis of first half of 20th century, there was system of what was known as Great Powers, that competed against each other but also held civilized world in ppolitical and military balance. Battleships were a product of naval arms race between those Great Powers. After WWII, Great Powers largely ceased being great and old system got replaced with system of "East bloc vs West bloc", which resulted in less independence for countries, changes to military doctrines etc. Only countries that could potentially produce a battleship were US and USSR, but former just kept their WWII battleship operational as long as cold war lasted, while latter just did not have the right know-how and deemed it to be too costly to be worth it. Nowadays, the status quo system is changing again and we might soon find ourselves in a world more similar than pre-WWI once again.

.. The US supposedly has two Battleship hulls kept functional by order of congress.. so why talk about the zumwalt at all? From all that's been said the zumwalt class was/is defective.. also well Battleships have always been more a long range bombardment vessel anyways, more so than an actual effective sea vs sea battler. Bigger ship more space for power and ammo and so on. I'd think it would all be about cheap sustainable long range bombardment capability.

From what I last read about railguns, specifically for the DDG1000 (USS Zumwalt) destroyer, they're not going anywhere soon. The Zumwalt class was specifically design with technology like the railgun in mind. Yet there have been so many issues that the initial order for ~32 Zumwalt class was cut to just three, and railguns are not anticipated for ANY of them. In addition, the projectiles have an estimated cost of $100,000 EACH, and the plasma generated by the railgun itself degrades the 'barrel' far too quickly to get any decent life out of it.

That's all due to economics of scale. If the original order for 32 did go, the ammo price would be normal.
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 2 месяца назад
@@vxxed8668 Saying the price would 'drop to normal' is thoroughly unsubstantiated. You should do some research before doing so. Why?........ #1) Linear induction accelerators likely require extraordinarily precise tolerances #2) The high temperature plasma likely requires very specialized materials, such as a custom alloy of tungsten, inconel, invar, etc. to reduce melting, expansion, etc. #3) The projectile is surrounded by a sabot to guide the projectile before it's discarded. It too will be of a specialized construction.

just build massive ships that can fire 100 missiles at once, how well would railgun battleships compete against them?

😅I thought this must be from 4 or 5 years ago but it was put out 11 days ago. Zumwalt destroyers are a dead program and so is the US Navy rail gun program for now.

Japan was once an industrial powerhouse and is still leaders in many technological fields today - except the military. Thanks to Winnie Xitler, Japan is now manufacturing missiles for the US (that's 100% trust from the US as missile technologies are some of most sought-after and highly guarded secrets) and is well on her way to become a regional military might. Together with the US/Taiwan alliance, it will be a formidable force not even Winnie & Pootin can brush aside.

The japanese got the tech from the US given their defense reliabilities contract. Given the US has already completed its testing years ago and is in the last stages of production id say they gave the japanese info from like 2015 lol cuz they shoulda been figured it out by now if they gave them up to date research. US has fixed the power supply, the issue being japans ships or infrastructure cant generate the power needed for multiple shots i.e they need bigger ships with full nuclear energy support like US carriers/Battleships. They have more than enough capabilities they just need bigger more powerful ships that can actually use the weapon.

China's electromagnetic railgun has long reached a kinetic energy of 64 megajoules and a range of more than 350 kilometers. The projectile Japan tested this time was only 320 grams, and its kinetic energy was only 5 megajoules.
