We were invited to see first hand just what happens to an un-restrained dog at the recent NRMA Insurance 'dog harness crash test' 2013 held in Sydney.
We can tell you that 23 out of 25 dog car harnesses available in Australia FAILED...
Let's just repeat that... 23 OUT OF 25 harnesses available in AU FAILED!...

Several people asked via our Facebook page the names of the harnesses that passed this test.... They were the Purina Roadie (cheaper at about $40 each but NRMA Insurance tested & approved) & the Sleepypod Clickit. More expensive at about $100 each. You need child restraint anchor points in your car plus adaptors at about $30 for each harness.

Rachel Gilbert Good point... no - the anchor points are actually the car's seat belt receptacle - so as long as the webbing is of a high standard AND the attaching clip to the harness itself.

PetTalkPeople Maybe that's how it is in Australia, but every car made from 2003-present, come equipped with the anchor points in the US.

I live in the US and it doesn't look like I can buy the Purina Roadie. Do you know of one that I can get in the U.S?

I'm pretty sure it's an Australian brand/model. You could maybe buy it online to be shipped to the US, I can have a look if you like?

Try Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength Smart Harness or Impact Seatbelt Harness. Both are crash-tested.

*** CORRECTION *** Just been advised that the dog harness safety tests were in fact conducted by NRMA INSURANCE - not just NRMA. A subtle but important difference. Our apologies to NRMA Insurance for the oversight. We have accordingly overlaid a correction this video.

Test done in 2013 are kind of useless now. There should be updates every year. Also for those asking about which brands passed also ask if that brand passed the test for your dog's weight. I do not believe any brand passed for large or extra large dogs.

Wondering if these crash test dummies are like the dummies used for crash tests: Are there monitors on the test dogs that indicate physical injuries, internal and external?

+Lucy Burr - as far as we know they don't do that - however the (dummy) dogs are weighted to represent a real dog so they can actually do proper testing on the harnesses themselves. We would hazard a guess that injuries suffered by humans in a similar crash would be much the same for an un-restrained animal.

Basically in AU all dogs must be restrained using some kind of harness ideally. If a lead only is used attached to a collar it has the potential to break the dogs neck in the event of an accident. Another way all dog trainers & show dog ppl transport dogs is in a crate - but not all dogs like this although with some basic training this is a very viable and safe alternative. Good question @Sallie Jones - We don't have any affiliation with any brand however the Kramar ROADIE mentioned in the story is one we have used personally - But there will be others. The main thing is to make sure you get one with all the safety attributes mentioned in the video around the 1' 22" mark in the video.

A well built car crate is the safest option.

All the harnesses should be banned strictly. No one would wear a harness for their child since it does not give the security like a safety car seat. Maybe they prevent dogs from crashing in to the windshield and hitting people but they don't do much for the dogs. A lot of the dogs have to be put down after accidents because of bad fractures and internal causes. All the dogs should have an impact safe crate, which is also fastened to the car it self. That is the only thing that saves lives. If the owners are not willing to invest to keep their dogs safe, they should not have a pet in the first place.

The harnesses that work, stop the dog becoming a projectile. Even less dogs will by secured if harnesses are outlawed, and more dogs will become projectiles, potentially killing someone who could otherwise have survived
