This was the final race of the weekend for Spec Miata at the Ohio Valley Sprints Great Lakes Championship. We worked on the #177 CoverLink Insurance Miata throughout the weekend, continuing to improve. We started 15th and worked our way up to 13th before falling back to finish 17th in a field of 30 cars. In the end, the car fell victim to the dreaded 1.6L heat soak and began losing power. Nonetheless, the race was a blast with close, clean racing. Spec Miata is definitely where the fun is!

Thanks, Aaron! I try to make it interesting since I'm a solid mid-pack racer. No battles for the lead here. haha :)

I'm in the midst of an MX-5 Cup league in the Assetto Corsa sim, and we'll be at Mid-Ohio in a couple days. This video was invaluable to seeing braking points, different lines in and out of traffic, etc. Thanks very much for posting!

So cool! Can’t wait to get into this class! One question: how’d you get your radio comms to come through in the video recording?
@SpikeMotorsports
@SpikeMotorsports 3 года назад
Hey Ryan, thanks for checking out the video! Spec Miata is a blast! So the process I use to get our team radio in the videos is a little too complicated to explain in a comment. I’ll make a tutorial and upload it to my channel next week to explain it. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while so thanks for reminding me. Ha Stay tuned! 👍🏻

How do you fall victim to heat soak? Shouldn't everyone have the same issues?
@SpikeMotorsports
@SpikeMotorsports 3 года назад
Hey Layne, This is about as well as I can explain it. There are others that can explain it way better than me. In Spec Miata, the cars run either the 1.6L or 1.8L engine depending on the year of the car. The 1.6 engines are susceptible to heat soak due largely to the Air Flow Meter (AFM). The 1.8 cars use a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and it does a better job of controlling the fuel mixture than the AFM. The 1.8 cars also have the VVT cylinder heads that help with performance in the heat. The beat thing to do is focus on keeping the engine bay as cool as possible for the 1.6s. Depending on the ambient temp, you can also run a gutted thermostat. Hope this helps 👍🏻

@@SpikeMotorsports i did not realize y'all ran different engines. That makes sense, why doesn everyone run the 1.8L? What are the advantages of the 1.6L?
@SpikeMotorsports
@SpikeMotorsports 3 года назад
@@Mtnbike121 When compared to the 1.8, the 1.6 cars are lighter, brake faster, and can change directions quicker. The 1.6 donors are also cheaper to buy when building a new car. The 1.8 cars must run a restrictor plate and weigh more than the 1.6s. The major upside to the 1.8 cars is that they have more torque. Generally speaking, the 1.6 cars are better on the tight, technical tracks, and the 1.8s are better on faster, long straightaway tracks.

@@SpikeMotorsports great explanation. I truly loved watching this video! I wish more people enjoyed watching track racing on RU-vid. I believe you deserve so many more subscribers! Unfortunately many people have a short attention span. I am no where at the level you are but enjoy doing track days but don't post them because they never really do well. Your an amazing driver and hope to do something like this in the future great video again 😀
