One thing I have to say here is Ricardo Montalban did a fantastic job of selling Khan's antagonism. I saw him in an interview, where he told what mindset he had to put himself into in order to play the part. What he said was villains never think of themselves that way. They do villainous things, but in their own minds their actions are justified.

Something you didn't mention is Khan turning his back on Kirk demonstrates a level of contempt for his defeated foe while Kirk is hunched a bit (reinforcing, with his body language, that he is utterly defeated) when he turns to confer with Spock. One more level of Khans' feelings of superiority over Kirk and Kirk playing into it. As for not detecting the locking on of phasers... That can be chalked up to Khan's crew knowing how to run a starship but not all the subsystems. While Khan may know and understand how everything works and what to look for on a starship, his crew most likely doesn't. Even specifics of the scanning subsystems. Khans' unfamiliarity with the systems is supported by his frantic searching for an override. If Khan can't know instinctively, his crew certainly wouldn't.
@Mauadib
@Mauadib 4 года назад
It is also I think because the guy that was at the equivalent of Spocks station is conferring with Khan when the Enterprise locks on to them. Now why he didn't notice when he got back to the station is probably what you were saying. He wasn't there when the initial alert popped up on his screen or whatever and then didn't see it when he sat back down. edit: Now I must know what the reaction girl is reacting to.

Maybe they have had phasers locked on for that entire time, Sulu is just confirming they are locked on.
@jacenskylo

Actually there is a plausible explanation it’s established in Star Trek the next generation as well as a couple episodes of deep space nine that if you use automatic computer target lock the sensors will detect it which is why Spock was able to detect the weapons lock however if you aim and target weapons manually it will not show up in a sensor scan.
@jamoecw
@jamoecw 4 года назад
@@jacenskylo this kind of reflects reality. when locking on with a weapons system there is a concentrated radar beam that is used to detect details in movement in order to ensure a good hit by the weapon system. if instead you just line up the shot with what you know from passive systems it is not nearly as accurate, or responsive but you don't use that beam. so in real life the beam when on a target is called a lock, and it is detectable by the one which it is locked onto, use the weapon without a lock and the enemy doesn't get a heads up, but you may miss.

So intertial dampers work in conjunction with navigational sensors to"predict"where/how/amount of intertial damping needed. During times where this process is unknown due to spacial anomalies, sudden shifts due to gravity and yes the jerking associated with impact fire. The intertial dampers do compensate quite quickly tho as to prevent full splat against the wall. Lol. Thx Lore!

As I recall yellow alert raised shields fully, pre charged phasers and brought one photon tube on-line but not loaded. This is why post Khan yellow alert changed. The defense fields could be against a computer system attack or beaming onto the ship.

What's great about this film is that this Film sets up the years of trek to come, the tension , the dialog and strategy being used and then a nice earned explosion at the end of the film or episode . I would lIve to see to see Nutrek go back to this type of Trek where they strategise and then attack with a satisfying explosion at the end, not like today where it's a shouty, explosion fest for 50 mins.

I love this scene. Like you said, it's a slow scene, but the music, the acting, and camera work is what delivers the drama and makes the tension palpable. I think it's much the same thing with the battle at the end of Undiscovered Country, and is what failed to materialize with the battle in Generations that resulted in the destruction of the Enterprise-D.

Ok question for you to think about. In the original series the Enterprise found a ghost planet that was only a couple thousand years old. During the show the Enterprise was thrown almost a thousand light years Spock got the ship back to the ghost planet in about a day. In Voyager they were 70,000 light years away from Earth it was going to take them 70 years to get home. Why the difference in the amount of time to travel. It should have taken Voyager 70 or 80 days considering Voyager is newer and faster. Please explain! Thanks.

Just a little over analyzing there on the actors movements happening off screen. I don't think it's bad directing, but rather something obvious. Of course Kahn is gonna get out of his seat he's the conquering augment he wants to see everything happen when he orders them to destroy the Enterprise. As far Spock he was already moving towards Kirk in previous shot and was a step or two away when the shot angle shifted it seemed a natural transition that he was next to Kirk. The one thing you missed and was glaring obvious was how plasma was supposed to travel through that blast door in engineering.

Defense fields could also be the equivalent of internal shields. We know the ship has emergency bulkheads that are primed at all times, but they're few and far between. to cover for this they might also have shields that take a fair bit of power to run. For that reason they stay powered down outside of combat.

People don’t realize that Kirk tricked Khan when Kirk screamed at Khan. Kirk had just talked to Spock, who said that by the book, hours would seem like days and that repairs would take take 2 days - which was code for repairs taking 2 hours. That is a trick by itself. Then, Khan takes the Genesis torpedo and says that he is going to destroy Kirk’s ship and bury Kirk alive. Again, Kirk knows that repairs will be completed in 2 hours. He yells at Khan, seeming to lose his cool. However, Kirk is totally in charge. After Khan turns off communications, Kirk is calm and saying that they just need to wait. Thus, when Kirk screams at Khan, Kirk is scheming.

15:14 Could it be that Khan and his crew are out of their element when it comes to, what was then, modern technology? Then again, we see in DS9 that Jack (genetically engineered) was able to study an entire language in a matter of hours. It's a rabbithole how complex genetically enhanced people are in Trek! Great video nevertheless, I enjoy these breakdowns :)

It's stated clearly later in the movie: "He (Khan)''s intelligent, but not experienced." Also, in the novelization, which you can take or leave, it's stated that Khan was familiar with the pre-refit Enterprise, which had a different console layout. Since almost all Fleet ships use the same consoles, it makes sense that he wouldn't know where the override was
@larzkruber822

I think this is exactly what the writers meant to be Khans downfall. He could have studied modern science and technology for a few months or even years but he was to confident with himself and obsessed with Kirk to take that time.
@Kyaonias
@Kyaonias 4 года назад
... Not to mention, genetic enhancements and technical prowess, are two completely different things. The Enterprise command crew, had many years of training, Admiral Kirk, was just being foolhardy and stupid. Even in the most basic situations, based on Age old naval military tactics (of which starfleet is based on), every ship on approach is considered a Threat by "friend or Foe" tactical analysis, until communications have been established, and threat postures have been assessed. Khan, played his role as a cloaked mugger, quite well. Up until, his ego got in the way. That's when things went downhill for him.

"Defense fields" hark back to the "Enterprise" series where they energize the hull itself against attack(cause they haven't discovered "shields" yet), versus energizing shields which is a, basically, electromagnetic defense that is some distance away from the ship itself to defend the ship from projectiles before it reaches the hull... Got it? Good.
@douglashenry6996

I think that when Saavik says "Energize defense fields", it means that they're activating what is referred to in TNG as the structural integrity field, which prevents half the ship from depressurising

Khan really should have tried to inflict more damage to the Enterprise when it was caught completely off-guard. Instead he became too cocky and over confidant in thinking he had the upper hand on Kirk just by firing upon the ship a couple of times. Kirk managed to stay one step ahead of Khan the rest of the way after tricking him and returning fire and doing serious damage to the Reliant.

James Horner composed the best score from any Star Trek movie. Old Age of Sail themes with awesome uses of leitmotifs, practically operatic. You can follow the action with your eyes closed with just the music. The battle in the Mutara Nebula in particular. Horner's best work. RIP.
@GinkoYoki234
@GinkoYoki234 4 года назад
I would respectfully agree and disagree. Keeping in mind James Horner is in my "Three J's List" (John Williams, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith). Overall, I agree this is the best application of scoring with the leitmotifs you cite. Yes, my favorite track is also Battle of the Mutara Nebula. Mr. Horner is quoted as saying that the musical cues have to be within a 10th of a second from the visuals to be effective. Somehow, movie after movie, he did that. As for musicality and historical endurance, however, I would cite Maestro Goldsmith's TMP score. "The Enterprise" is, overall, one of the best orchestral pieces in cinematic history. "Leaving Drydock"... I mean I've really not heard any thing that says, "Let Go!" like it. Plus, having the main theme being used for what is arguably the best Star Trek TV series' main theme... well, that's got to count for something :-) Further on, his pastoral theme for "First Contact" is something that's still performed in Star Trek concerts - along with the aforementioned TMP Main Theme and Battle of the Mutara Nebula.
@MichaelScheele
@MichaelScheele 4 года назад
@@GinkoYoki234, I agree that many parts of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture are iconic. The main theme for the Enterprise and leaving spacdock are eternal. As with Basil Poledouris' score for Conan the Barbarian, it's unthinkable to separate the music from the movie.

Let's not forget how MYTHICAL Admiral Kirk is at this exact point. His Crew, Bridge and all, would've looked up to him almost 'Godlike'. To actually be in the presence of someone such as Khan, regardless if they ever heard or met him, the Crew on the Bridge would've been in absolutely complete awe of Kirk being so openly challenged.. this scene is one of my all time favorite scenes in any film. Honestly a truly beautiful thing. I'd say off hand the suspense and tension is met by John Carpenters The Thing. Ah, those were the days 😃

Something to be said for why the Reliant didn't notice that the Enterprise was locking phasers, why would the Reliant even be watching the Enterprise at that point? As far as they were concerned, the Enterprise was already defeated and even if they did attempt to fire, they couldn't actually do any damage. What crew member wants to watch the monitoring station on the off chance that the Enterprise will stupidly make a last ditch futile attempt at scratching the paint, when they could be watching the utter humiliation and destruction of Admiral Kirk? The only reason that one guy is looking at the console when everything goes to shit was because he was expecting to see the data on Genesis coming through.

They grossly underestimated just how powerful Kirk's current Enterprise here was. An if Enterprise had been a little more powerful or had happened to aim in all the right spots what firepower they still had at this point woulda probably been able to near DESTROY Reliant. @SampoPaalanen
@SampoPaalanen 4 года назад
@@ZoeMalDoran yeah IIRC Joachim was the person talking with Khan when Enterprise locked on phasers meaning he wasn't even on his post. He probably got back to his post just in time to notice the target lock when the shields lowered by themselves (from his point of view) and refused to go back up. That's in fact a major difference between Khan and Kirk and by extension their crews, Khan is arguably more intelligent then Kirk but inexperienced and highly arrogant, while Kirk is a veteran captain with years of experience (probably including being an ensign during the klingon war of the 2250s), so he knows how to exploit Khan's weak points mainly his inexperience and ego. You'll notice that in all their interactions Kirk is playing to Khan's ego, in this scene and infamous "KHAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!" scene later pretending to be more hurt and beaten then he actually is and later openly insulting Khan to make him follow the Enterprise into an obvious trap.

Another thing I liked was the small bit of embarrassment for Kirk when he had to take his glasses out. A big character arc for Admiral Kirk is that he's feeling older. His birthday passing, the fact that he's an admiral now, and that instead of being at the con of a star ship he's most likely stuck behind a desk. This feeling of getting older is again shown in this scene when he had to put his glasses on to read and punch in the data to send the signal to Reliant to lower her shields. The lieutenant and probably most of the bridge watching him put them on was probably a small gash to Kirk's ego and the fact that probably in his mind, a Captain shouldn't show weakness in front of the crew.

My theory about the phasers locking on target is that Sulu actually says "Phasers locked on target" - present tense - it is being stated as a fact that is already completed, not that it's half way through locking on. Furthermore, it's conceivable that during the initial fight, Sulu had already locked on to Reliant, it's simply that there wasn't enough power at the time to return fire (Spock: "not enough against their shields"). Kirk may have simply not realised he'd already done it.

Nope, that's definitely not a belt buckle taken from a USS Reliant officer. Khan had the necklace under his protective gear when he was on Ceti Alpha V - before he got anywhere near USS Reliant or any current Starfleet uniforms (other than the environment suits worn by Cmdr Chekov and Cpt Tyrell). It is first seen when Khan removes part of the protective gear when he is about to put the Ceti Eels into Tyrell and Chekov's suit helmets. It is most likely a memento of Lt Marla McGivers, Khan's wife and an ex member of the crew of USS Enterprise.

My personal view: Normal phaser lock is made with an active targeting system. Active sensors like a sonar ping can be detected. But at this range, an expert like Sulu, knowing how important it was to take Reliant by surprise, locked his firing solution with PASSIVE sensors (Including the Mark I Eyeball. Had someone less experienced than Sulu been manning phasers, the shot might have gone wide.
@BruderEngel

@@marcharkness6101 I would agree but I can't recall there ever being passive targeting on starships. I believe there have been references to 'manual targeting' in TNG. @@MatthewNash That was always a little odd to me. We've got a ship full of seasoned veterans in an unusual situation, the rookie pipes up -- great look from Leonard Nimoy at 1:58, about as close to annoyed as Spock could be -- and as it turns out, the captain of the ship would have been wise to have listened to her quoting regulations (...and nowhere in the five year mission did they ever run into a similar situation, I guess?). Spock reminds her that the Admiral knows the regulations, and then the Admiral carries on. Boom. "It's just a show; I should really just relax." Kirk's coming to grips with middle age is a theme in the movie, with antique spectacles to remind him that his eyesight isn't what it was, and then he gets caught with his britches down, making a serious and costly error in judgment -- a nod to his getting rusty and becoming a "waste of material" by accepting promotion to admiral -- and after Khan's attack, he mutters to himself about going senile. Earlier in the movie, he'd made a comment about how galloping around the cosmos is a game for the young, Khan has just limped away from round one, and maybe this young officer was right. Eh, the movie's nearly forty years in the can, and while I do think it's the best one they did, there were some writing issues. After Reliant gets away, Kirk points a finger and makes a sharp comment to Saavik about regulations, and her reaction is to look down as if she's been scolded. My take would have been for Kirk to have his rant as he did, as he transitions from a guy behind a desk back to what we saw on TV, older and wiser, while considering the young officer in front of him. Then, only as Shatner could deliver the charm, he'd smile and tell Saavik "Please do keep on quoting regulations," with some kind of "Thank you, sir, I will do my best" from Saavik. Of course, she's invoked later in the movie when Kirk and Spock speak in code, a subtle reminder that there's a reason for regulations ("sometimes", if you're Kirk), and that's how and why things work the way they do on a starship. While the viewer might think Spock was taking a dig at Saavik, that's out of character for him except when he's dealing with Dr. McCoy, and he's communicating to Kirk that they're on the same page with her at this point. I do recall reading at the time, before the change of actress changed the dynamic, that Saavik was intended to be part of the family, and an exchange as I described would have been a way to really bring her into the fold.

How I would justify the reliant not knowing enterprise locked phasers on them is: If you notice Earlier when Spock discovered they where being targeted, they where actively scanning the reliant. From what we see, the Reliant is no longer scanning the enterprise after that initial attack on the Enterprise. I would imagine you can tell if you're being scanned because generally when you're actively scanning you usually emit something and someone could pick up on that If they're looking for it.

I do have one, I'd say for once viable, reason why the Reliant didn't detect weapons lock. Spock was actively scanning when he detected the lock on. It could be this active scanning is what allowed him to noticed where as the Reliant is only using passive sensors. This combined with training/experience with the technology could actually explain this one. Mind you like so many, I've often wondered why the Enterprise can't use that prefix code to do a lot more than just drop shields. It could be the system is geared for limited use, and they may well be unable to do much more. Part of me could see this, you don't want to give anyone but the ship's captain the ability to utterly destroy the ship. At least this way you're free to take some pot shots to disable, then use your own forces to retake the ship. But it's still flawed any way you look at it.
@elwoogie1963
@elwoogie1963 2 года назад
At that point, the shields were not being monitored closely by Khan's crew until the alert that they were dropping sounded making it the best choice of system to be taken over by the prefix code.
