One thing I loved about this episode was how Fear responded to new people, or people outside of his power. He's a bit kooky, and to those he feels will be in his power he's confident, almost Q levels of cockiness. But to the Doctor, and Holo-Janeway upon learning her real nature, his demeanor instantly changes. To the Doctor he's annoyed, partially cause the Doctor is more or less (at the time) his opposite. Reasonable, not willing to kill, and is focused on saving others. He finds him a party pooper naturally. But with Holo-Janeway, who more or less tricked him, he's afraid. He knows the end has come and will show him as much mercy as he'd shown those he killed. His own fears have become reality. And embodied by Holo-Janeway.

This episode scared the crap out of me. I am sensitive, and the chaotic parts upset me. I am ok with the scenes on the ship with them discussing fear and why people do things that create fear. I definitely love this final scene. That deadly whisper! Even fear starts to get it when he says what will happen to us, and changes it to me. Some decent psychology going on.

See progressives? See?! This! This! Is how you make a female lead look powerful! It's not that we don't like female leads, we just don't like shitty characters regardless of their gender. I also love the fact that character with power is female and the bad guy is a male but at no point is that relevant. It's almost like fear was caste as a male just because a male actor auditioned for the part and gave the best performance, almost unbelievable right? Can you imagine if this was Discovery or Picard?

It's the way she whispers it too. She knows she's the most dangerous thing there and that Fear is hanging on her every word, so she displays that power by whispering and forcing him to listen very carefully, only for her words to offer no respite, no peace, only inevitability. It's a very good power move.

@scaper8
@scaper8 4 года назад
More than anything, it's the inconsistencies in her (and, indeed, all of _Voyager's,_ but even more so her) writing. Mulgrew herself has said how much it bothered her, and her own headcanon is that Janeway had some sort of bipolar disorder or something similar. When _Voyager_ was good, it was great. It just had so much just okay or down right bad in between, and so much uninspired and/or inconsistent writing, that it's just not as well remembered on the whole.
@timothydoyle9635
@timothydoyle9635 4 года назад
@@scaper8 This. Janeway can go from stricter than Picard, to looser than Sisko with the rules. Voyager as a whole suffers from this. The writing is inconsistent, and characters never fully develop. It shows in the actors performances as well. Basically everyone on the cast outside Tim Russ, Jeri Ryan, and Robert Picardo have devolved into phoning in their lines for the last couple seasons. As for dislike of Janeway(Not Mulgrew, she can act as seen in this episode and others, but you gotta work with the script you're given), and Voyager as a while its more of the missed potential angers people more than the quality it self. The show has some very good episodes, but they are the exception rather than the rule. During my yearly rewatch of the Trek shows, Voyager has more skipped episodes than the other series.
@MonCappy
@MonCappy 4 года назад
It's because she is the worst written captain in Star Trek. Not because her character is bad, but because she was written so inconsistently throughout the series. Out of all iterations of Star Trek, Voyager had the most inconsistent writing in terms of quality. This badly affected Janeway's character arc as a result. Frankly, I think Kate Mulgrew should be celebrated for making the most of what she was given to work with. She was absolutely brilliant at her portrayal. A lesser actress would've failed where she succeeded. Overall, I liked Janeway as a character, but looking back on Voyager, I feel like the series was ultimately a failure. It could've been great with better writing and if the writers didn't play it safe.

So after the room backdrop went black, I noticed that it wasn't just the camera that was aligned with Janeway, but it's as if Fear had shrunken slightly, they appeared to be on the same level physically, their heads parallel. ... Yeah, maybe she was on the step and that's why that happened. Maybe she stood on her toes, or maybe Fear actually shrank because his power over the situation had dwindled. The only reason I even noticed was that you pointed out before that he was taller than her before. I gotta pay more attention to this stuff.

In regards to your points about camera angles, Lore, I think it would be really interesting to see an episode of a Trek series, any series, that is viewed entirely through the angles of security cameras on a ship, as if the entire episode were a collection of recordings from different parts of the ship, similar to experimental episodes of other TV shows that have one stationary camera in a single environment for the entire episode, only sort of opposite, yet achieving the similar result of having a different perspective than what is normally shown.

SOUNDS AWFUL! Normally the kind of episode I would have hated. But this was beautifully written, performed, and filmed. And Ms. Janeway could be a complete badass when the occasion called for it. I would have submitted a job application to her!!! And the camera guys probably had to battle drinking problems. Trust me, I know things. They say the next episode (Tuvix) is where the Voyager crew is proven evil, but this episode is just as bad, if not worse. "Fear" in this episode is clearly a new life form. It doesn't want to die. Any other Trek Series would have explored that. Not on Voyager. NOPE! They taunt a dying being.
@Nesseight
@Nesseight 4 года назад
Janeway is a true "strong female" character. If Alex Kurtzman, Rian Johnson or Dan Weiss and Dave Benioff directed this, Fear would have died 5 seconds after he was introduced by falling off of a platform with a Wilhelm scream, then for the duration of the episode Janeway would lecture Ensign Kim (who is now non-binary) about how she is in charge of all the men because she is better than them.

Fear never lies, only distorts and blurs one's vision like trying to look in pitch darkness. Fear is honest because fear makes you look inward. only seeing yourself or what you fear to lose from your side. Did the darkness in a room lie to you when you didn't see the object you ran into or did the loud sound lie to you when you misheard someone because of it? No they didn't, fear is a very primal prospective, if only one prospective guide one's actions they will be blind to everything else around them. Humans have the ability to look through several different lenses at the same time that's one things that makes humanity special. That's just my opinion of fear sorry for it being so long.
