Scenicruiser 858 - First Start And Run In Almost 4 Years! (March 7, 2020)

The Drivers of the day soon leaned that when on a level highway in forth gear, by sliding the shifter slightly forward but not nearly enough to put the bus into neutral, electrically created an ungoverned 4th gear leading to the first of the, I was doing 70 on the flat when this Greyhound bus, Stories! The purpose of the micro switches on the shift selector just below the driver’s floor is to aid in down shifting. In 1954 to 1956 a standard GMC big truck was powered by a single 471 Detroit, in contrast the cruiser sported two 471s engines. This people-mover was very futuristic for 1954.

Congratulations on your survival as a Scenic owner! It takes a very special woman to be a happy wife of a bus owner! So far, we have been married for just over 45 years and four buses, one of which was a Scenicruiser. Over the years, I have done a LOT of the physical work on the buses, for myself and for others. Your exposure of the mechanics involved in actually pulling the engine, (I remember the trailer/engine cradle) doing a clutch job and re-installing speaks volumes of your commitment to overcome obstacles as they (frequently)arrive, important for a RV Bus owner who either cannot or does not want to hire everything out. Time spent in opening access spaces and cleaning out the accumulated crap in each will prove to not only be time and money well spent, but knowing the location of each will prove a HUGE help in the future! Here's to another dedicated bus nut! (However, at 78, I'm no longer into buses, but can still happily pass on some (now outdated) helpful info on electrical systems and HVAC.

I marched in a Drum and bugle corp. That had three of them. Back in the late seventies, Early eighties. I spent a lot of time cleaning and working on them. Not to mention, three summers in them!

It was great to get to come out and work on the scenic with you. Happy to see it getting closer to being back on the road. And i love the music on the time lapse.

beautiful to see this old bus, , i know it's a mess now but i can see the possibilities ,, i've been following you for a few years now and in that time i have gradually fallen in love with buses ,,still hoping to own a Senicruiser at some point but i have since about 18 months ago purchased a bus of my own which i am glad i found Bus grease monkey because i have learned a lot about my bus through watching him because we both have the same PD 3751 please keep up the great work and bring us some more great videos

Heat, maybe not a open flame. Take a generator welder, clamp the cables on both side of the sized linkage and heat it up . no flame.

Hi TJ, I am in aw of your tenacity and gumption to get that clutch changed in true shade tree fashion. Good work! I want you to know I have watched your clutch change an average of once a year. TJ, I want to know how your original HVAC space is being used. There are many options to get that space working as it should again. How can I help? I do not like flying saucer or space shuttle rooftop HVAC units on any frequent road used RV’s towed or other wyes, this equipment is not wind or air slipstream friendly. HEY!!! JUST LISTEN TO THAT MOTOR!!! GREAT. AS SOON AS YOU CAN, PUT YOUR IN THE TANK. SO FAR SOUNDS GREAT! AFTER 4yrs VERY GOOD.

Shop vac time. If that shaft won't budge try heating it with a little stick welder. Clamp a lead on each of the shaft and warm it up good. Just don't melt it. Might be able to do it with a battery charger.

Man just one try and that bus comes back to life! Yeah!

Something I never understood is why nobody made, or used a hydraulic shift linkage setup. We've got hydraulic clutches, and since once it's bled it is totally incompressible, I don't understand why that has never been done. Especially in a case like this where running a pair of hoses, heck even brake line tubing would be a hell of a lot easier than sorting through all that stuff. I could literally see a pair of double acting cylinders on both ends, one as the master, and the other as the slave doing this job. Extra bonus, you wouldn't have to run those weird upside down and backward shift patterns!

Got excited hearing that there was a potential for a video every other week. But man, you say something like that every time, then it's a year before the next one. You've posted one video since this. I get that life stuff happens, but don't tell us something and then not deliver. You can post updates you know. Doesn't even have to be a video.
