Great video Tom! Your videos regarding your server rack and file servers and other nice tech stuff really motivated me to take my data backup seriously! I’ve only got an Airport Time Capsule and a 2TB external Seagate drive, but it’s only the beginning! I even made a video about my process of trying to access old Final Cut Pro projects and general file organization with everything.
Thanks, David! It's a ZPAS SJB cabinet. I originally bought it on eBay. A few years ago, ZPAS had quite a presence on eBay and Amazon in the UK and there were several fantastic deals on various network racks. Sadly, they're no longer distributing here as far as I'm aware, but the rack itself is still made and available elsewhere.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour Awesome. I'll definitely see if I find one in the aether. About to embark on setting up my own home network. If my rack looks and runs half as good as yours I'll be happy.
It's quite funny to see that I am using pretty much the exact same backup setup as you have, just different versions of synology and mac mini boxes. But appart from this I use as an off site backup C2 from synology. Anyway great vid 👍.
I love the 09 Mac mini server’s form factor and I wish I could find one. At this point I am happy enough with the DVD slotless outer shell and just swap it with a regular 09 Mac mini
I doubt you’ll every need this information, but I use EaseUS Backup as a free (and a premium paid) program for backing up drives in windows which is fairly flexible
You built up some kind of naming scheme for your rack-ware? Whatever it is , its got favour to it! (In the past, I used to set my device hostnames to stuff with a lot of dashes in them, i.e. srv-rdp-office. Not so much helpful in this day and age.)
GothicKittyMadness not the best choice IMHO, the through put ain’t great so the transfer speeds lack. I pimped out a late 2012 Mac mini (SSDs, 16GB RAM) and it was having issues sharing out more than 2 files at once on PLEX.
Hey, on macOS you can just format the disk as HFS/APFS Encrypted, very easy way to add encryption to what you've shown. Not for an enterprise set up either, but my point is that even home users should at least use the basic encryption methods that are out there straight by the OS they are using anyways. :-)
I've recently made a video about that fan unit. It's assisting with the cooling of the rack as a whole, but it's directly placed under the Mac mini shelf, so the mini and external drive definitely get a good bit of cooling.
Jaysus, your electric bill. Me? I have a 2TB WD Could NAS. That’s got 33GB used now. With it not only is it accessible (over web interface at the very least) to all the operating systems I use but I can access it remotely and send files to friends. I think these home server racks are overkill, only good for learning I’d say but you rarely see old CISCO stuff in them, so at the very least most of these enthusiasts AREN’T earning a CCNA LOL. It’s a free country, do what you like, but for me it’s a waste of money and time.
I believe that second 500gb storage drive in the Mac Mini is the original drive that came with my 2012 MBP back in the day. Very cool to see it living on.
Great stuff! Now I get what ASMR is finally... You should add it as a tag ha! BTW - I would also recommend BackBlaze in addition to all of that ... Just backup your backup to Backblaze for $8.99 and you'll be very happy.... I had multiple backup locally (similar to you), until one day I didn't ... User error, moving things around (reorg) ... Lost it all... Backblaze saved the day :)
