The most prevalent symptom of Scheuermann’s kyphosis is a rounded upper back. The exaggerated curve in the thoracic spine results in a “humpback” appearance. In addition, Scheuermann’s kyphosis can cause severe pain in the upper back, especially with movement. This is due to compression of the spinal cord or its nerves.
Scheuermann’s kyphosis often causes loss of mobility in the spine because of intervertebral disc degeneration. Scheuermann’s kyphosis and immobility of the thoracic region can cause forward positioning of the head, when compared to the rest of the body.
As the thoracic spine curves forward, the front of the pelvis rises. This shortens and tightens the hamstring muscles. In severe cases, Scheuermann’s kyphosis can cause compression of the lungs. This can result in chest pain and difficulty breathing.

I feel you brother. 20+ years of constant pain from skateboarding, tens of thousands gone, all for no improvement. Time for a spinal fusion. Chin up mate, chronic pain is not fun.

I am only 14 years old and got this diasease. I went to therapy and everything but it doesmt work much. I get bullied for it a lot even tho its not that bad as it can be. I hate it and i cry myself to sleep and was thinking of suicide. I met people that have had this diasease and corrected it. That boosted my ego. Does someone have any advice?

Try to well reputable chiropractor... usually you can find groupons that include consultation, x-rays, and first adjustment... I've seen crazy results within a year of a care plan....

I am 27 and I can confirm it gets better! I was not allowed to do any physical activities in HS. Now I have a very physical labor job and Im sore at the end of the day from the workout but no issues in my back! But i do recall the terrible pain I went through growing up. Just have to deal with it as best you can. I wouldnt worry about being teased. I know i know its easy to say and its hell when you go through it bit trust me my man. You wont know any of those losers in a few years and nobody in the adult world gives a shit. Too busy worrying about other things ahaha.

I am 55 and have been diagnosed with Scheuermann’s Disease, I am in so much pain and no one wants to deal with me anymore and pushes me onto another doctor that sends me to someone else. I am very depressed not to mention that I cannot get my pants on so I have to wear stretchy pants. Does anybody have any idea of what I should do

thats very late in life to be diagnosed. The damage would have been done in your early teens. I was diagnosed in my late 20's. I always knew I had a problem with my back. I was very depressed for a long time. Go see a Physiotherapist, that might help?

you need to have your upper back fused. I've had scheuermann's disease since I was a teenager have been on narcotics for over 13 years and stopped working over 11 years ago and am 37 now I just had 12 vertebra fused and it's helped so much its about 70% better pain wise and I'm only 6 months out. my lung capacity is way better. that awful forward head posture is gone. it's been a long fight to get there. have seen every Dr. under the sun. got referred to a deformity clinic here in Canada in Toronto and they got me an appt within a week of the referral they could see from my xrays and MRI's I was in major pain and discomfort. I was ready to go to Switzerland to be euthenized if they said no to the surgery, but got super lucky. surgery went amazing they fused T2 to L1 so I've only got 4 mobile vertebra in the lower back that are mobile so it's an adjustment but I'd do it 10x over was well worth it. hope this helps mate.

@Kapitan Odbytnica I can understand what you mean m8, I don’t judge people at all, I never have. You could also try just picking the brains of a surgeon who is a recognised and putting your case to them, I’m in Scotland and I did a bit of google searching for spinal surgery reading their qualifications and reviews from patients who have had Scheuermann’s disease surgery. I was on the Scheuermann’s disease fund website and they have a database or the top experts in the world one of the name kept coming up where I’m from....Scotland I come to the conclusion that if I ever have the chance of surgery I would choose this man to do it. I didn’t think anything of it as I don’t like to get my hopes up too much and I’m sure you will be the same with Scheuermann’s. I was at my own local “super hospital” for an MRI scan which went to the orthopaedic specialist there, my results come back telling me my spine was in a bad way and they didn’t have the skills and capabilities to correct me, they sent results to a spinal deformity specialist hospital and they want to see me in person, it also turns out the guy I researched on google is the top specialist in the hospital I have to attend. Just waiting on my appointment, this man has fixed many Scheuermann’s spine scoliosis spines and even severe in half spines all to complete success, but I still don’t get my hopes up “just incase” from things I seen and reading about I do believe you can and should have an opportunity for having your spine sorted to be as normal as possible m8, don’t be afraid to ask anyone a question, or for there opinion if they are qualified to give it. Even ask a family member to help you write down what you want to ask what you would like to achieve, what dose go in your favour is age and no professional surgeon will ignore you m8👍

My doctor from Turkey, especially best at what other doctors avoid to help. He is extremely gifted i think. His name is Proffessor Dr. Mehmet Aydogan. Write him from instagram and send your case to him, i am sure he will help. God bless you. (He corrected my 83 degree back to 39, god bless you.

@Helen Kish Miller-Lindholm This maybe 2 years to late I just found this video. Purchase disability aids to help button clothing, putting on socks, pulling up clothing. Just type in disability aids in your search engine on your computer/cell and many sites will come up. If it's to overwhelming Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart etc has products on their sites as well! For the doctors look online maybe a Dr., NP, PA, in the next state over may help with pain management and surgical intervention if needed? Sometimes we must travel a bit for care! Good Luck & many HuGs💖💞💗

Is there any difference between SCHEUERMANN'S and thoracic kyphosis? If it is which one is more complex means can't be treated?

Thoracic is just the part of the spine that is affected.

I’m 45, diagnosed at about 18 and it’s been very difficult for me socially and emotionally as well. I still contemplate suicide because of how I think I look.

My back looks similar to what kyphosis looks like but a bit less curved but still not completely straight maybe it just looks a bit thicker and building because of fat or im just overthinking it

There isn’t a cure. For most cases, it’s disease management - healthy weight and nutrition; consistent sleep; minimize strain and load on the back; Pilates; heat therapy like hot tub, therapeutic massage to target the back and hamstrings; spinal physical therapy, and minimizing time in stationary positions. I’m still getting a grasp of what this means and how I will build a routine that I can sustain. Ultimately, my orthopedic surgeon told me to train like an acrobat.
