My grandfather was an American. In Pattons 3rd Army. He was part of a forward force that liberated a concentration camp. He was 17 when he left and 20 when the last soldiers were sent back. My grandpa was one of those who was tasked to fetch groups of Germans and send them down to tour the camp. He returned home haunted and tried to drink his sorrows away. He died shortly before 9/11.

The cousin of my wife's Grandfather was the jeweler who made the ring for Schindler. Many scenes were changed for cinema including the shower scene. The actual showers in Auschwitz were open air so you would not have mistaken it for a gas chamber. However, it is clear why Spielberg chose to do it the way he did.

20:10 when the SS-guy asked the kid about his name (and also his age), i don't think he does it to show that he's cruel. i would say spielberg used this scene to show the emotional contradiction of these guys. most of them weren't '24/7-monsters', but loving fathers, caring husbands, nice neighbours and so on as well. i think that makes them even scarier, when they at one moment can show affection towards a random kid, and at the very next moment can turn around and randomly kill people. for me an 'unempathic 100%-monster' would be easier to comprehend, but most of them weren't; apart from these 'special actions' they were usually 'quite average human beings'. unfortunately that also means that nowdays (and in the future) humanity will never be save from such events. under the wrong circumstances (like e.g. current wars) a good portion of the people we personally know and like will turn into such pricks - probably even some of those watching this very video.

The real life Amon Goeth has a daughter named Monika Goeth, she's still alive and now is identified with her father's cruelty. She's now trying to meet the survivors to seek emotional healing for them and for herself also. Just search RU-vid for her name, there are videos about her, now she goes by the name "Monika Hertwig" she changed her surname to distance herself from her father. Amon Goeth not only destroyed the Jews, but also destroyed his family, his own daughter.

"I go to work the other day. Nobody's there. Nobody tells me about this, I have to find out. I have to go in... everybody's gone." "No... no. They're not gone. They're here." "They're MINE! Every day that goes by I'm losing money, every worker that is shot cost's me money, I have to find somebody else, I have to train them." "Don't be making so much money, none of this is going to matter." "It's bad business." Fun Fact: During production, the atmosphere was so grim and depressing that Steven Spielberg asked his friend Robin Williams if he could tell some jokes and do comedy sketches while Spielberg would watch episodes of Seinfeld (1989). Some of Williams' sketches, while played through the speaker phone to the cast and crew, ended up being part of dialogue material for his character in Aladdin (1992), the Genie. Final Essay Fact: When Steven Spielberg returned to Cal State Long Beach to earn his BA thirty-four years after dropping out, his film professor accepted this movie in place of the short student film normally required to pass the class. This movie had already won Spielberg Golden Globes and Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. Girl In Red Fact: The shots featuring a red-coat-girl came from a story that Audrey Hepburn told Steven Spielberg while they were filming her final movie Always (1989). She told him of an incident during World War II where she saw a little girl with the same attire while the other people were loaded onto trains. That moment was forever etched in her memory, and it struck Spielberg when he made this film. Due to the amount of violence and horror depicted, Spielberg made Oliwia Dabrowska, the red-coat-girl, and her parents to promise him not to watch the film until she reaches eighteen (in 2007). True to what he said, she was horrified of the result when she violated the promise at the age of eleven.

Every time I step into a Schindler elevator I think about this film. Yes, it's Oscar Schindler's old elevator factory, started by a couple of Jewish businessmen from the USA after the war. They found Oscar Schindler thank's to connections through the "Schindler Jews". He helped them find a suitable factory and they put his name on it. However, Schindler was a broken man and had to leave his position in the firm. The company still wears his name.

Great acting, great directing, impactful cinematography, including 45:37 with basically all the movie in black and white you instantly know the girl in the red coat is somehow important, and then seeing her again in that mass grave and to be burnt you know why. Sorry to hear your grandfather lived through this. Thankfully, my family, who was from this very area, in Poland, left before all of this went down. And look at how evil Amon is. And this isn’t an exaggeration. While a few historians had issues with this movie, most think it’s an excellent representation… including the depiction of Amon. It’s truly astonishing how the Reich managed to poison such minds. The German people, just generically speaking, are fine, normal people just like anyone else. In fact, my Jewish ancestors who fled this area? …one of them, my grandmother, married a German-American at the height of WWII. And my grandfather, the German, was a wonderful person. He even surprised me with his compassion. His generation, and he was one of the most accepting people in my very conservative family (I’m gay). And yet, their minds were so poisoned to produce someone like Amon. And he wasn’t a rarity. So, one can’t argue that he was an outlier. He wasn’t. Anyway, sorry, I drove on. This situation just horrified me. And when I see my own family, I see how unnecessary it all was. In my own family I have German and Jewish ancestors marrying each other. And it’s not like they’d been in America for hundreds of years. They were both recent-generation Americans. Their parents or grandparents spoke Yiddish or German. Married right near the peak of WWII. Makes me proud of my family, but also underscores how poisoned the German people were. They are normal people. They are good people. They were flooded with propaganda to turn them evil and hateful against the Jews. Unbelievably tragic. One final point (I’ve written too much), but since your grandfather didn’t want to talk about it… When you watch this movie, remember that it’s practically a documentary. Again, there are a few historians who criticize it. Of course some specifics may be made up or dramatized (were the women of Schindler mistakenly sent to Auschwitz? …that scene was obviously emotional manipulation… they go to the gas chambers only to be showered). It’s not perfect. But broadly? It’s 100% accurate. Read the comment from the German person who commented… they show this in history class. Because it’s accurate. You want to know how accurate it is? Get this… the notion of Schindler’s List is abstract. Where is this “list”? It’s all fake, right? At the time of this movie no one had ever seen this so-called “Schindler’s List”. Well…. Six years after this movie came out some items were discovered in Oskar Schindler’s former residence. Among the items? Schindler’s List. His actual list has been discovered. It was an abstraction when this movie was made, which maybe lent legitimacy to the doubters. But THE LIST has now been located and is real. This movie is not a documentary. It takes liberties with the details. But it’s CLOSER to a documentary than a movie. You wouldn’t do wrong to believe every single aspect of it. You’d get some details wrong if you did, since there is some dramatization, but you’d get about 80% of the story correct if you treated this as a documentary. That’s how accurate it is.

It's so important for the entire world to remember the Holocaust. What can happen if we fully dehumanise groups of people - any group of people - to scapegoat them for society's troubles. To remember what the slide into Fascism looks like. Sitting here in Australia, things could be a lot better here, but I am most of all appalled and worried how far the USA is seriously flirting with fascism, it even has governors and judges getting away with ignoring and violating it's own constitution right now.

Here in the United States Schindler's List was also shown in history class. Although I don't think it was standard to show it everywhere. But in Dayton, Ohio at least it was shown. But varied by school district. Basically because of how real the violence was. You could opt out of watching it with a note signed by your parents. But I only knew literally one or two kids parents who chose to. Basically because of the times. It was the 90's so they were freaking out about even mild forms of violence in every form of media there was. Videogames like Mortal Kombat and rap music and movies. So no matter how true to life it was some people still had a problem with it. We learned about it all regardless. But watching it was controversial. But I very rarely heard of most parents saying no. In any other circumstances I'm sure they would have. But since it was about the Holocaust it was something seen as very worthwhile. I just wished they'd spent as much time talking about what was done to the tribes here in America and the genocides that happened here. Including my own tribe and ancestors. The trail of tears, bull run and Custer's last stand is the most we were ever taught. The rest was quickly taught within a week or glossed over completely. And despite them spending a large amount of time on the Holocaust. As it should be. The other's were either never talked about period like the genocides of millions by Stalin and the red army in the Soviet union. They also didn't cover the genocides by the Japanese in China, Okinawa and the Philippines and all throughout Asia. Those were ignored also. And the millions and millions that were murdered, raped and tortured there. I've had to find out in my own research and thankfully some people making videos and trying to get the information out there about it in the 24 years since I've graduated school. It was happening all over the place. I guess my point is that those should not be glossed over and forgotten either. But we were shown this film. Thankfully. And with as crazy and war hungry and violent and bloodthirsty people seem to be getting the past decade. I think it needs to be re-watched again by the entire planet. Or disgusting, evil inhuman things like this will keep happening. Over and over and over...............😢😔

Jestem w 100% Polakiem. Mój ojciec był w Wehrmachcie i uciekł. Dlaczego byl? Bo musiał mając młodszą siostrę i matkę z wycelowany pistoletem w tył głowy. Czego mnie nauczył? Łapać muchę i ją wypuszczać, bo jak mnie nauczył? Ona też chce żyć.

If anyone has not been, I highly recommend going to one of the Holocaust Museums. My grandfather was in WWII and the Battle of The Bulge in a specialty infantry division and he manned a tank. You would hear him as he shuffled through the house quietly mumbling to himself...'got 6 of 'em that time'... or whatever the number was. He didn't talk about it either, but he also wasn't experimented on - I cannot imagine. God bless everyone who had to relive that the rest of their lives. We must never forget.

This is a very hard film to watch. You can read about the war but when it's put into pictures, it really hits home. Emotional. 😥 If you want a movie that's more light hearted, I'd recommend, the Sting. A heist movie Starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. It's clever and funny.👍

My grandfather lost his father and several brothers in Munich right after the Kristallnacht. It's a miracle that I am alive. This story is very important, we must never forget.

I used to date an American girl in the 80s and in 1986 we went to visit a penfriend of hers in the German town Xanten. There was a man there I can't remember whether it was her father or grandfather and he said something to me that made me think he had been SS and missed it. I said to my girl "We've got to get away from here" and she replied "I know".

As many have said, this is a hard movie to watch. And as violent and evil as this movie is, the actual events were even worse in some instances. On with the movie ... Edit : Watching your reaction was a blessing. God bless you and your family. Evil does exist in the heart of man. May God reveal His pure goodness to you and yours. Per your request, I recommend, as comic relief [ knowing you reacted to Schindler's List days ago] the movie -- Honeymoon In Vegas. With Nicholas Cage. Will definitely lighten your mood, no matter what state it is in today.

In the 1980s American television ran a miniseries called War and Remembrance. It had two main stories. One was a US Navy family fighting the Pacific War. The other was an American woman, her uncle, and infant son who were trapped in Europe when the Germans invaded. The story of the Jastrow family trying to escape Europe in my opinion rivals Schindler’s List for the depiction of nazi atrocities.

Here me out - Ralph Fiennes is an excellent actor! You've not watched him portraying someone as inhuman as Amon Goeth, it's only now fair you watch him as the concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel, M. Gustave, of the film of the same name. The character is just the diametric opposite of Amon.

Ironically, Ben Kingsley who played Mr. Stern, Schindler's accountant, also played the fugitive Nazi Adolf Eichmann in the 2018 film 'Operation Finale' about the Israeli operation to find Eichmann in Argentina and bring him to trial. Also a good film.
