4:58 what gets me about this scene is how the SS soldier is both clearly young, probably 22 or 23, and when he stops the doctor he says “she’s as good as dead, leave her.” He’s not barking orders at him, he basically telling him to be smart and save himself. The doctor tries to buy more time and asks to bring her inside, so the soldier shoots her directly in the head. Of course we’re horrified by what he just did, and what surprises me even more is that Spielberg makes sure that we see the soldier sort of back away at the scene he just created, as if he was just as surprised by what he did as we were as well as the audience. His hand is also shaking when she falls to the ground the doctor is left shocked and traumatized by what just happened. He doesn’t kill the doctor too, he just tells him to join the line and pushes him away. He doesn’t sound angry or vengeful, he says it like he’s secretly pleading for the Jewish doctor to be reasonable (as crazy as that sounds considering the situation) and just save himself before he gets killed too. This guy probably never killed anyone before that point in the film, and I doubt the character ever thought he would up until that point. A lot of the death squads had men like that, soldiers who weren’t really qualified for the normal armed forces so were chosen for these “special occasions” and many of them were at first very nervous and traumatized by what they did to innocent civilians. However, as time went on, most of them became very proficient at killing, as well as desensitized to the screams and violence, and some even started to develop sadistic tendencies or a certain pleasure to killing. It’s a scary thing what people can be convinced to do.
He says Was soll dieser Scheiss hier?!Mit diesem scheiss Gewehr hättest du mich erschiessen können, du hast so nah an mir vorbei geschossen! Entschuldigung. Was heisst hier Entschuldigung?!
Jack Nicholson in 1992 & Ralph Fiennes in 1993. Two of the greatest performances ever to lose to a more-deserving Oscar-winning performance. Gene Hackman in Unforgiven and Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive. Of course, Hollywood doesn't make movies like A Few Good Men, Unforgiven, The Fugitive, and Schindler's List anymore.
The fact that that nurses and doctors killing the patients was b/c they knew they would die and they wanted them to die a easy death instead of getting shot during that time it was chaos and people were scared and people were dying all over the Ghetto and I would like to see Poland just for educational purposes and pay my respects to those who died. Its unreal this happened in 1943. RIP to those people who died..
What's even more sadistic is that this was when Germany was getting pushed back and losing the war but still chose to put their soldiers and resources to do this. As much as calculated and logical we thought they were the were also just straight up brutal.
@@smokepurp5614 ??? Because the eradication of peoples was their primary motivation? That is pretty obvious, anyone who knows anything about germans at that time knows that they wanted to eradicate all the lesser races or subjugate them. Winning the war was not the primary goal, but a secondary one
I dont speak german but he said something like so lange Bei geshosen or something like that, meaning , He didnt care he shot the guy they were holding, but he was upset he almost hit them as well. sorry my german was probably not correct, but that is what I heard.. and I heard , bist du veruct geworden, are you crazy
@@stevenbaer5999 so what did the soldiers say, can you translate please ,bitte, ive looked for a long time but never found a good translation, my guess is he he didnt care about the guy they were holding being killed. but he was upset he almost shot them as well. As good as cinema can possibly be. Saw it the day it was released in a Boston theater. Not a seat was empty. I sat next to a very famous sports journalist, one of the finest ever, and he like most of us was hiding his eyes at times and crying throughout. It felt like it was impossible to breathe at times. No one left the theater after the credits rolled and the lights came on for about 10 mins. No one spoke, no one moved. Most frightening feeling I ever experienced. The journalist asked me if I was OK and then a stranger hugged him.
I remember seeing this in my local cinema and when we all left I noticed an elderly couple struggling to make their way to the exit. The lady in question passed out in the aisle and she had to be helped out by the staff. They were both in tears. I'll never forget it. I can only imagine it must have gave them flashbacks. Life is so cruel at times.
I was blown away by how beautiful the cinematography in this scene was, especially when it gets to the night raid. Contrasted with how ugly the subject matter is. Great art can be truly amazing
My brain truly can’t fathom this happening at times. The sheer calculation of it, the planning, the coldness and the utter contempt for a group of people. Zero empathy, compassion, understanding. How can so many be brainwashed into this ruthlessness? We all could be a death camp guard given the circumstances and if you think you wouldn’t, you haven’t delved into your shadow yet.
@@cembarhana750 The SS were only the SS because of the specific set of circumstances they were born into. @river2352 is only able to contemplate on the evil doings of the SS because of the specific set of circumstances they were born into. If an SS officer was born into your life, he would not become a Naht-see because he would have been shaped by the same educational environment you were. And, conversely, if you were born into an SS officer's life you would likely follow the same Naht-see path as you were shaped by the Naht-see educational and societal framework.
This is why citizens, normal every day people. Of every race color and creed, should always have the tools to make the choice.. you cant fight off an army. But you can take some with you when you go.
@@TheSwedishAssassin No the point is they had guns - but it made no diffference. By this time they had already been taken away from them Now, people living in the country - much different story. Hit an and run, guerilla tactics, were effective. This was an urban population however Look at the Warsaw uprising - organized, armed resistence by the locals. Sure, I guess they took a few Germans with them But proved to be totally ineffective - and while possibly a good moral decision - a massive mistake resulting in the slaughter of a huge portion of the city, including tens of thousands of women and children who otherwise would have lived, and the most complete destruction of any city in Europe When a military does not care about civilian casualties urban uprisings like that are crushed and many innocents die for virtually no reason
@2:33 some of finest cinematography and screenplay you'll ever see. I am scared.I am terrified; to elicit true emotions is the benchmark for timeless films.Chapmen stated this in one of the only interviews he ever did. Dear God what those people went through, for absolutely nothing.
I had no business watching this at Age 6 I had nightmares of being chased by dogs and hearing gunshots ugh the sound of the German language can be so creepy no offense it’s a scary beautiful language
@@kaliyuga1476 not sure what you mean by that lol my point is this was a traumatizing scene to watch especially since I was a child yes I found this scary…
@@roberthanawalt3919He said the scene was awesome, not what's being depicted. And he's right. This scene is well shot, well directed and well written.
@@vetarlittorf1807Sorry, but I'm not buying it, considering his reply to my first message. And if he meant that, I'm thinking he would have said it. The whole movie was masterfully produced and filmed, not just this one scene. I've seen a lot of antisemitic comments posted to scenes from this movie where someone gets killed.
I still can’t believe this was allowed to happen, it’s absolutely insane how evil the human race can become!!!!!! History should never be forgotten or it will repeat..
@@peacespreader1312 Yeah, just ignore all of the goddamn genocide that's going on. Focus on an extremely minor issue in terms of "shit that's going on in the world"
Doctors and nurses can be politically compelled to do horrendous things. Consider the chemical and physical castration of minors in our day and age. It is *still happening*
@@MrTsiolkovsky Doctors and nurses are not being politically compelled to perform chemical and physical castration on minors. Sadly the ones that are doing it are just doing it to make themselves rich. They are taking advantage of the progressive liberal cult of ideology to make money. They are committing chemical and physical castration on more than minors, that would be bad enough, they are taking advantage of parents suffering from Munchausen by Proxy to mutilate, castrate, and irreparably destroy the future of children as well as young adults in order to make themselves rich. It is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen in my life as a medical man. I would surrender my nursing license, and live on the street as a homeless person before I would subject a child to this atrocity.
This seems to be a very effective re-enactmanent of terrible events that should be remembered in some way. Perhaps this type of re-enactment will give some sort of peace to the people whose lives were changed. Perhaps people who have no direct contact with these cultures should be made to learn from the terrible events which are re-enacted in this film.
And not a mention of the Selbstschutz and the guy who's son was German Ambassador to Ireland in 2009. Google the Ambassador and then wiki ........Ludolf Jakob v. A

It's a bit hard to catch, but a rough translation is Sergeant: "What was that shit supposed to be? Have you forgotten that your fucking rifle can shoot people? You shot so close by me." Rifleman: "Sorry Sergeant Sir." Sergeant: "What do you mean sorry? You've gone completely crazy."
I can!👋🏻 He said, "What are you doing, he was fuckn mine, wtf, and l finally found him! You took him! That SOB's slong was like this fuckn big and he's been fuckn my wife all this time!" 😤
Insane that Southern Europe survived the 700 year Muslim Moors occupation which was as brutal as what you see here except swords were used at that time.
Fun fact: This film was shown at an elementary school that taught mainly inner-city kids to educate them on the holocaust, and Steven Spielberg was in attendance for the showing. The film was stopped during this scene because the kids were cheering and laughing so hard they were falling out of their seats. The rest of the film was not shown, and Spielberg left. Just something to think about.
spielberg wasnt there, it was highschool students, not elementary school students, and it wasnt shown in a school, it was a class trip to see the movie. get your facts right before complaing about vulnerable people in out society.
@@ashleyjwilliams8943 you have actual proof of this of course? Because we all know Oct 7th was in fact legitimate slaughtering of innocent civilians, including kids. Carried out by an actual terrorist group. Unlike you I don't believe media controlled by said terrorist group.
