The worst of all is that CPH airport (Københavns Lufthavne) is privately owned in its majority (60%) and is listed on the stock market Schiphol group, on the other hand, is owned by the Dutch government and the Cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. As travellers we never give the ground staff a second thought. You have opened our eyes to the danger they are in. I go to Amsterdam a lot but not with KLM in the future until they put workers health as a priority. I hope others do the same. If we stop flying with them we hit them where it hurts, in the pocket. Unfortunately, this attention for this problem comes to late for my father who died in 2013 due to cancer of the sarcophaces, he was a cargoworker (kabelgat) and his workuniform always reeked of airport fumes he was employed for over 25 years before he retired early at age 57.

Ik heb daar ooit eens een oplossing voor bedacht wat tegelijkertijd het gebruik aan kerosine drastisch inperkt. De oplossing is een geautomatiseerd railsysteem waarbij het neuswiel van het vliegtuig in geleid wordt . Het railsysteem bevindt zich direct na elke afrit van de landingsbaan en tot aan elke startbaan zodra het neuswiel wordt aangehaakt in het railsysteem worden de motoren automatisch buiten werking gesteld. D.m.v het gebruik van transponders wordt elk vliegtuig keurig netjes geparkeerd bij de juiste gate zonder hulp van personeel op de grond . Het railsysteem werkt ook vice versa waarbij het vliegtuig naar elke startbaan zal worden gebracht. Het soms kilometerslange taxien kan dan geheel zonder motoren geschieden. Waardoor het hele gebied rondom Schiphol aanmerkelijk in luchtkwaliteit zal gaan verbeteren. Het systeem kan uitgebreid worden naar Schiphol Oost waar onderhoud plaats vindt maar ook naar de diverse stallingplaatsen . Voordelen railsysteem 1) verbetering luchtkwaliteit 2) verbetering werkomgeving grondpersoneel 3) reducering geluidsoverlast 4) ongelukken uitgesloten geen parkeer schades meer 5) minder ziekteverzuim 6) kerosine besparing

Modern slavery is present alle around the word and also in the Netherlands. Authorities postpone, dive away, and take as long as possible to do something . In the meantime people get exploited and their health violated. On the outside our government likes to make a good impression, but o boy so much is wrong in our little country!

I just started working there, and I can tell you, most of the platform people are totally fine with the health risks. They are laughing about and don't seem to care about it at all. I am not gonna work there for too long, that's for sure.

In the eighties we worked with members from ground crews, mostly from a Pakistan background at the time, on improving the working conditions at Schiphol Airport. We tried to organise them into trade unions as members of the Dutch Trade Union Federation (FNV). The conditions were already appalling 40 years ago. Needless to say, we did not win that battle at the time. Poisining 20.000 workers is apparently not a problem in the Netherlands....I will try to track down some of the people we worked with at the time to send them this docu, but most have moved back to Pakistan since then. Many thanx for making this available in English, hope this struggle will finally be won!

This reflects very badly on schipol and KLM and the Dutch parliament/regulatory system. Genuinely surprised the ground crew are not using N95 grade masks which now post covid are easily available, but why oh why arnt the Dutch regulators enforcing them and implementing the remote start up switch off procedures of Copenhagen. We all know the answer but thats where regulatory bodies have to do their thing to protect groundcrew and fine the transgressors. Never ever heard of this issue before but would assume its a similar problem at many other heavy traffic hubs

I wanted to know how much the airport fees rose in Copenhagen after they started with electric pushbacks. Then you can make a calculation what a human life is worth for Schiphol and KLM. And parliament should make it an obligation for them to cooperate with RIVM (or independent) health studies and measurements on the airport platform. All in according to labor laws. That is the minimum an employer should do for its employees.

Really shocking. After watching the documentary, I do realize something. In India for example, Engine start happens on the taxiway and not at the gate (at least in Bangalore and Hyderabad Intl. Airports) Indeed it is shocking to see this happen. I also know for example at LAX (Los Angeles Intl. Airport) the aircrafts can't start their engines unti they are on the taxi entrance.

And the Goverment is only realy debatting about nitrogen levels and limits ,over farmers and ignoring these kinds of heavy polutions.

I can understand the frustration of the ground crew. I live 20 km from Schiphol and under a very busy flightline and I see on my balcony the black layer of dust. Imagine what it does to your innards. Schiphol and the divers companies that land there must come to some serious changes because this is life-threatening to those workers. As it is stated in dutch law that every worker has the right to work in a safe environment, get a move on and give them a safe place to work. Also a hefty pay check for dangerous circumstances. Let the people who fly pay for it and dan the cost.

Dat gaat al meer dan 50 jaar zo. Is inderdaad zeer ongezond deze uitlaatgassen. Maar dat interesseert niemand van de leiding hoor.

Initially in Dutch, now also in English. OK, guys, let's stop ALL air traffic in the world and close all airports. Destroy world trade a little bit and the economy. What all airports should do is provide personnel working near aircraft with proper masks with good filters to prevent inhaling toxic fumes. A basic and simple first step to a solution. Another step would be to push back planes a bit further before the engines get started.

The reaction of KLM to invest in bio-fuel and newer planes is only in favor of their own financial gain. Newer planes are always more economical than older planes. That difference is very small. The easiest way to reduce emissions drastically is by reducing the number of flights. But unfortunately for their staff, they only care about their market position.

A literal and figurative toxic environment. Underpaid and overworked. I'm not a socialist at all, but this is a disgrace!

Ongelooflijk. Het is werkelijk mensonterend om daar mensen te laten werken als dit allemaal echt waar is.

It's not really a secret, but i do feel it needs more attention to deal with this. When i worked at Schiphol in the realy 2000's this was already well known, maybe not just put into hard numbers. It is logic, working in such environment, wether its an airport, a seaport or distribution center, there is always things floating around that are toxic and/or just very unhealthy.

Dit zag ik zelf op Singapore Airport gebeuren toen ik daar voor mijn werkgever een project had op de luchthaven. Dat was in 2015. Volgens collega's was Schiphol wel wat beter. Singapore Airport is meerdere keren verkozen tot 'Beste luchthaven ter wereld', maar achter de schermen zag ik direct dat er geen enkele zorg was om de gezondheid van het personeel. De dikke as lagen/deeltjes die overal op kleefden, de zware dieselauto's die de hele tijd door de overdekte gedeeltes reden; één grote gifwolk. Alle managers van de luchthaven lopen als zelfingenomen halve goden door de luchthaven en weten alles precies uit het boekje. Echter, ik heb nooit iemand ook maar een woord over de gezondheid van hun medewerkers horen reppen. Ook bij mijn NL werkgever leek er nooit te worden nagedacht over de luchtvervuiling waarin hun personeel aan het werk was. Bij opmerkingen van mijn kant over ongezonde werkomstandigheden werd ik door hoofd HR aangekeken alsof ze het in Keulen hoorde donderen. Collega's die het al 10-20 jaar deden leken er nooit bij stil gestaan te hebben.

Ik zou zo’n fijnstof masker gaan dragen, is dat niet slim? De andere oplossingen klinken duur en de helft van veel is nog steeds veel. Zo’n masker blokkeert 99% van de fijnstof en kost praktisch niks op een ticket?

Boel plat geen werk meer verrichten tot veilig is toch niet zo moeilijk dan geen verdiensten voor schiphol moet je kijken hoe hard ze gaan lopen kom voor je zelf op een ander doet t niet voor je gr

I'm Dutch but I will post this in English too for our foreign readers/viewers. I work at an outside maintenance firm with a Schiphol contract. Almost daily I visit the "platform" as we call it here to do my work and I see all of this in this documentary confirmed 100%. I too walk amongst the parked planes but when the engines start revving up the difference is I can hide in my company van when they're pushed back. And those APU's...oh man...they're always on...on almost every parked plane on the busy piers (E/F/D). But truth be told, I don't spend a fraction of the time close to the planes as compared to the luggage guys (and girls) but I'm always glad to high tail it out of there and get back to our workshop. That said we're not exactly safe since our location is next to a elevated taxi lane and the old 747 cargo planes blaze by every day engulfing our whole workshop in burnt kerosene fumes... Ik bezoek bijna dagelijks het "platform" zoals we het hier noemen om mijn werk te doen en ik zie dit alles in deze documentaire voor 100% bevestigd. Ik loop ook tussen de geparkeerde vliegtuigen maar als de motoren draaien is het verschil is dat ik me in mijn bedrijfsbus kan verstoppen als ze worden teruggeduwd. En die APU's...oh man...die staan ​​altijd aan...op bijna elk geparkeerd vliegtuig op de drukke pieren (E/F/D). Volgens mij is dit al een oudere video. Maar helaas nog altijd even relevant. Word tijd dat er eens flinke kamer vragen worden gesteld en dat Schiphol is tot veranderen word gedwongen. Het hele land denkt dat het door corona komt dat er nu gigantische rijen staan, maar de echte reden zijn gewoon de onveilige en onredelijke werkomstandigheden. Ik heb voor een beveiligingsbedrijf gewerkt op Schiphol die mij doodleuk gebroken shifts gaf (naar werk, naar huis, terug naar werk, en weer naar huis op 1 dag), veelte lange dagen, te weinig pauzes, en een slavenloontje. Maar gelukkig hebben Schiphol en KLM corona hulp gekregen van een paar miljoen! Als het aan mij zou zijn zou Schiphol de Noordzee in verhuizen, worden minimumlonen verhoogd naar 14 euro, en bouwen we het dan oude Schiphol vol woningen.

FNV laat ook weer lekker zien dat ze niets uitvoeren. "Ja, wij houden schiphol nu aansprakelijk voor de onveilige werkomgeving op schiphol." Gaan jullie hier ook iets mee doen? Ah, daar gaan we het natuurlijk niet over hebben.

"money is more important." above 900 meter height those planes stop polluting.... on of the reason farmers have to shrink their footprint, while Schiphol and other BIG companies' do care. lol like their action..... we have electric cars.... sounds almost like how they attack their farmers to handle CO2, while Schiphol, is one of the biggest polluter hope they never ever may expand..because that would show government is more interested in money then health and climate change. Hope one day they create a way to tax ALL not only the small persons, but specially they BIG ones that make lots of money that should also be invested into solving the problem.. now the money disappears into Brussel and Netherlands government..

Ik ben nu arbeidsongeschikt ivm een COPD gelijkende kwaal ( aangeboren) Ik vraag mij nu af of ik na 43jaar bij een afhandelaar gewerkt te hebben , welliswaar in de loods en op slecht onderhouden kantoren , of mijn kwaal niet erger is gemaakt door het fijnstof gedoe.... vooralsnog nu geen nare ziekte onder de leden zover ik weet.... maar ben wel bang....

You can easily confirm this by consulting ESA and their monitoring if air pollution via satellites program. A couple of tears ago it was confirmed that people in the area have their life span due to low quality air they are breathing

This would be a global problem for any airport with high volume flights. At Schiphol, staff are offered a fine particle face mask to wear to combat this. They can't force staff to wear it but the masks are there.

Nobody is wearing any lung protective gear, so it's very obvious that they exposed their lungs to toxic fumes. One doesn't need to be a genie to be able to notice that.

WAT staat er in de handleiding bij elke motor die GE / RollsRolyce leveren? Daar moet haast wel in te lezen zijn dat het volkomen veilig is allemaal...of niet veilig natuurlijk. Lijkt mij dat zo'n manual makkelijk op te zoeken is, en daarmee lijkt ook makkelijk te bewijzen dat elke maatschappij / luchthaven de feiten kent

All these fumes come unfiltered into the cabin, something that nobody wants to know about. You can smell it with every start-up when you fly.

Ik heb in een vliegtuig gezeten richting Montréal/Canada die 40 min na opstijgen,terug moest omdat er een ernstig technisch probleem met het vliegtuig gaande was.Niemand had wat door,er werd op dat moment nog niets gemeld door de piloot,totdat er een grote straal vloeistof uit de vleugel van het vliegtuig spoot.Ik zag het,en vroeg een steward wat dat was. De steward antwoordde dat het vliegtuig niet kon landen met een volle tank. Dus vlogen we rondjes over de oceaan om de kerosine te droppen.Ik was verbijsterd,en gaf aan dat dat slecht was voor de natuur e.d Waarop werd geantwoord door de steward dat het al verdampt zou zijn voordat het beneden was. Ik heb dit altijd zeer sceptisch bekeken,nooit iets van geloofd. En....hoe vaak gebeurt dit dus wel niet??

KLM uses their APU for conditioned air and optimum comfort for their passengers. whats wrong with that? Working at a airport is a choice, nobody is forcing them to do this job. its like smoking sigarettes and sueing the producer knowing its unhealthy,

1) How is this different than any other airport on the globe? The aeronautics industry is built on a fuel burning foundation. The economy cannot operate without this network of planes flying 24/7. Where are the masks and protective gear they could wear when on the tarmac.

But the war on nitrogen is on. Toxic fumes are neglected.

Flying within the borders of Europe should be taxed orderly !!! Only then the train becomes a worthy alternative . That would be a starter 💪 For decades now..... Klinkt alsof ze allemaal gewoon met p3 filtermaskers moeten rondlopen wat je ook in de petrochemie moet gebruiken. Zo'n risico met passende PBM hadden ze tientallen jaren geleden al moeten bedenken

I bet Zembla staff never travel by plane from Schiphol. I haven't for more than a decade. Doesn't me make as holy as them because they never flew from there.

Totale nonsense dat dit probleem niet erg bekend is bij werknemers. Ieder normaal denkend mens snapt dat er super hoge concentraties fijnstof etc is. Iedereen is zich bewust van deze situatie, maar iemand kraait erom. Mijn vader en opa hebben allebei 40+ jaar in de slechte lucht van Schiphol gewerkt en zijn resp 85 en 93 jaar geworden. Natuurlijk is dit niet gezond en de een zal er vatbaarder voor zijn dan de ander, maar laten we niet doen alsof dit een nieuw probleem is. Als het je niet bevalt moet je lekker een andere baan zoeken 👍🏼

Schiphol moet inkrimpen en naar Kopenhagen kijken. Tickets duurder, minder overstappers, het is niet zo moeilijk als je de graaiers buiten beschouwing laat

Vliegen flink duurder maken, nuttloze vakanties annuleren. En pas werken als het veilig is met zuurstof maskers etc. Als mensen avontuur zoeken. Mogen zij fietsen naar spanje 😀👍🏻

Tegenwoordig weet iedereen wel waar je een gezonde baan hebt of niet en dit probleem hier is niet sinds gisteren en toevallig ook niet alleen op deze luchthaven. Een andere baan zoeken zal daar toch niet verboden zijn.

zie je wel de waarde volle dingen zijn in veel ogen waardeloos zoals het leven. maar de waardeloze dingen zoals tijd spullen en vooral geld wordt als waardevol gezien. geloof en weten zijn door elkaar gegooid en geen mens die daar aan denkt

Heftig, mijn vader heeft nu net voor zijn pensioen ook kanker gekregen en werkt ruim 30 jaar op Schiphol…

Ik begrijp dit toch allemaal niet zo goed (eigenlijk wel hoor). Tijdens corona mocht er gedurende een week amper (of niet) gevlogen worden. De wereld en natuur is er op die kleine week effectief op vooruit gegaan omdat de luchtvaart zo goed als stil lag. Ik zeg niet dat luchtvaart verboden moet worden. Maar als ik 14-15 jaar was en op reis ging met mn ouders, dan was op reis gaan met het vliegtuig gewoonweg niet betaalbaar. Ondertussen zijn we +25jaar verder en is reizen met een vliegtuig een van de normaalste zaken ter wereld. Er stijgen alleen maar meer en meer vliegtuigen op, de wereld ziet er vanaf en de mensen lokaal ook. Reizen met het vliegtuig zou voor de happy few moeten zijn (het zal niet aan mij zijn). Zolang de grote bedrijven maar geld kunnen blijven scheppen op de kap van de wereld en op de gezondheid van de mens. Money makes the world go round.. till it's to late.

They forget about the new planes wich are more quite, lower fuelburn, lower emmisions. Also the ground handling at Schiphol became more than 80% electric. So the quality improves, but those turning engines at gates has to stop after 1 minute or less. That has to be a rule.

And the Dutch Farmers are to blame?????

Should use electric tugs to get the plane all the way to the runway and start the engine there. Especially on Shiphol some taxi routes take atliest 15 minuts. That's 15 minuts of both engines running using loads of fuel.

Geld verdienen is nu eenmaal belangrijker dan veiligheid!!!! Luchtvaart, Scheepvaart.... overal is dit zo!!!

Ik snap de medewerkers zèlf ook niet hoor! Vandaag de dag kun je overal terecht en met een beetje handigheid nog goed betaald ook! Ik ben nog nooit bij een werkgever gebleven die niet goed voor mij was, of werk dat voor mijn gezondheid niet goed was. Zou mijn gezondheid en ellendige oude dag of nog erger, vroegtijdige dood, er never ever voor over hebben.

Daarom is het nu chaos op Schiphol, wie wil dat werk na deze docu nog doen? Daar kan geen geld tegenop. Hoop dat er nog meer gaan stoppen zodat dat vliegen eens op gaat houden.
