I was a soviet soldier on another side of Germany border 1989-1991 :) Magdeburg. DDR. I was born in Tallinn, Estonia. I send greetings to all former "enemies":) And in general it is necessary to live in peace and friendship. Our politicians always push together the people to reach the mercenary purposes.
i was 18 years old when i first arrived at Butzbach, West Germany in Oclober 31 1973 via train from Frankfurt am Main Central station. i was assigned to the 2/3 FA. and i stayed there until January 1978 in which i got married in Butzbach to a German girl. Thank you for the memories. It hurts to see the kaserne razed. Especially the barracks that i stayed at when i was a young soldier and later married and reside at Eiggenstein. To me Butzbach is my home too, I love that town.
What an amazing walk down memory lane. I was stationed at Schloss Kaserne back in 89-91 with 369th PSC (3AD) that ran the MILPO. Such an amazing place to get stationed, the most charming base in Germany. Located just a two minute walk from downtown. Spent so many nights in the local hangouts, especially Pilsquelle. Owner's sister Maria was a cutie.
@@patrickcollins9870 I was there during the same period: October 1979 - August 1981. I took two months terminal leave to go to college (my ETS was October 7, 1981). I was in "B" Battery 2/3 FA. Almost all of those buildings are gone now - those were torn down years ago to make way for housing. The schloss is now offices. Our BC (battery commander) was a CPT Allison. I was 13E, FDC, and I recall two section chiefs - a SSG Sumpter and a SGT Smith.
Served at Schloss Kasserne from 1971-1973 6/562 ADA in 72 we were deactivated and redesignated 1/1ADA. We were HHB. Hawk missile unit. Still remember the smells coming from the Bakery down the street.
Thank you for sharing the video. I enjoyed Butzbach . Was there with 2/3 artillery C company. Aug 30, 1973 to April 23, 1977. To all others who were stationed there. thank you for your service.
I was there at Schloss. We manned the hawk tacticle site overlooking Friedberg on the high hill in Bad Nauheim.I could see Elvis' Home on the far side of the valley mount about 3-5 kilometers . The last 6, I was assigned to be DSP driver which took me all over the country . With my pick of the motor pool.
I arrived at Schloss Kaserne in 1988 and was stationed at Ayers Kaserne for two years , I was a U. S. Army infantry soldier. I enjoyed my time there and miss being in Germany .
This was great! Like some of your other viewers, I was stationed at "The Rock for two years, 85-87. Loved Butzbach, and Mikes place was my favorite lunch spot- a little bar owned by a really nice guy who was from Greece, about 100 yards or so from the front gate of Schloss Kaserne... A lot of men and women went through there. Thanks again!
I was stationed at Schloss Kaserne Butzbach 1987-1991 58th General Supply Company... Lived in off post Government Housing in Giessen...Made Sergeant while stationed there. Great Times!!!
fond memories of my first duty assignment there at Schloss Kaserne. i was assigned to the 2/3 FA from November 3, 1973 to January 20, 1978. I loved it there, the music blends with video, because it was the music i would listen too when i was there. How i would ride my bike all over the Shloss and Butzbach, hehe i was a teenager then, yes i interacted with Germans of my age then i did with my fellow soldiers. Since i learn. ed to speak German in high school, it was easy for me. Thank u
I probably checked my ID card with a lot of you guys who were there in '77. I worked at the rec center during the summers and went to just about every movie showing. Thanks again for the video trip back to my past! :)
I also was with the 1/1 ADA summer of 71 until fall of 73. DSP, 62C30. I remember a "Whitney" once saved my tipsy bacon outside the EM club one night. His Karate came in handy, thanks (if it was you!).. ha ha ha
I was at Schloss Kaserne from '88-'91 with Echo Company, 122nd MSB. Thanks for posting this video -- it brought back a flood of memories from 20 years ago.
Thank you for posting this. I was stationed at Schloss Kaserne from October 1979 until I took terminal leave in August 1981 to return to NC to begin college. I still have friends there in Butzbach. I last saw the kaserne in 1997 after it had been closed but before it was demolished to make way for new housing to be constructed. I was in 2/3 Field Artillery in Bravo Battery. I walked thru the former billets of B battery one last time back in '97. Last time I was in Butzbach (2006) it was gone.
Thanks for posting this video! I was stationed with the 28th Ordnance Co. from 1966 to Fall 1967. I fondly remember the 'Pizzaria', Gasthaus Werb (on the square), Zum Alten Fritz (a great place to play cards), and Foto Keutmann (located not far from the Kasern entrance.
Was with 16th Signal Battalion, Company A, from 1969 to 1971.Met characters in the Army and "on the strauss" that I will never forget. Boy, has der Schloss changed. Thanks for the tour.
Hi Tom, I imagine that you then worked under 1Sgt. Pollard, who was assigned to your Company [A]. He was stationed there 68-70, after he just finished a tour in Nam 67-68. Sorry to tell you that he, SGM Elmer L. Pollard, just passed away a couple of months ago in Florida.
I was at Fleigerhorst in 79 as a short timer (8 months) . I landed the a cushy job as DSP (direct service platoon) driver . Delivering parts and classified sealed documents to commanders out in the field. I was given a secret clearance. And actually carried a locked leather briefcase. I never knew what I was carrying. Drove the BC' jeep or dodge truck or van or deuce and1/2. Mostly at night . Worked one, got two off. Sometimes alone. Mostly there were two. It was an opportunity for short timers if they qualify to get away from the field. 76 thru 79 b3/59 ada
My dad was stationed there from 59-62, we lived on Virginia. I remember the tiny candy store up by the school, and the Prison across the street from the playground, wow the stories we made up about that place as kids!! We were there when the Berlin Wall went up, pretty scary time! And a daughter of a friend of my parents, was lucky enough to have dated Elvis when he was stationed in Bad Nauheim!! Thanks for sharing this !!!
My father stationed my family there from 1986-1990 (roughly or so). Oh gosh, some of my happiest memories were spent in Germany. I hope to one day go back there with my own family and show my children where I grew up when I was a little girl.
I was just there 48 hours ago.. the place has changed and “The Rock” is no more. The only building I saw standing was the chapel, it’s an industrial park now
I was with the service Batt 2/3 from 72-74. We moved from Ayers to Butzbach in 72 My best friend then and now is Michael V Miller. I recently returned to Butzbach . 40 years later, it was awesome to see, Stayed for four days. Loved the time stationed there.
I was stationed in Butzbach from 1973-1976 with B 3/59th ADA as a mechanic. Meet and married my wife in 1974 and our 1st born was in 1976. We lived in an apartment just off of Market Square need to the movie theater. Have many good memories from there. I visited in 1980 and Ole Carl the cobbler was still renting out apartments above his shop.
Just saw this video after a Google search. Was in 2/3 FA from 73-77. Schmieds and A pizza joint nearer the Kaserne was we spent most of our time. However, knowing how dismal some of the other posts were in Germany I think Butzbach was paradise. Was back there in '97 so not much had been done to the place. Glad to see this video to see what has been done. Many thanks Roadking1970.
Wow, it sure has changed a lot. I was in the 1/1 ada there in 74-76. I lived just off the main street above a slaughter house. My landlord was the owners of the Summerlad Guesthouse. I must have walked down to the Markdplatz a hundred times. Thanks. John Long
The actual schloss/castle of Schloss Kaserne was home to the 58th General Supply Co. during its short reactivation from 1987 to 1991. At 5:14, I can see my old room on the top far right of the screen with a window open on the 3rd floor. The 58th had the whole 3rd floor in the center and the entire west wing to the right and behind the tree as Barracks. I can rightfully claim that I have lived in a castle. I was there in Germany from April 1987 to June 1989. Many great memories and some of the best food and beer: Licher Bier and Fred's Gyros (durum kebabs) mit tzatziki always hit the spot. Thanks for the Video and reconnecting me with Butzbach.
Yes indeed! I was in 58th General Supply Company from 1987-1990 Then was reassigned to an aviation unit from Hanua to Desert Storm......Yes great memories....I remember Fred’s for the Gyros and Fries...Lich Beer.....So many found memories of Germany as a whole....I did two tours their....
That Liecher Beer on tap at Schmedes around the corner down the Strauss, would make my face feel like it fell off my skull. At 17 I experienced German girls at the discotek. Americans were highly loved and respected by the locals. Cold war soldiers..salute
I was a medic stationed in Butzbch in 66 and 67. Worked on base for awhile but spent most of my time at the Housing area dispensary.... I really enjoy this video. Kurt Amundsen
I was sent there before going to Ayers Kaserne since it was my first time in country in 84. Had to take the German language course. I remember one of the instructors was a beautiful dark haired German lady. She was a party animal. I remember the beginning of the 3rd week she didn't show up for class because she had been out partying and fell down a flight of steps and broke both wrists. Lots of great memories of Germany. I'd love to go back.
I was stationed at Schloss Kaserne from 77-79 with the 564th MP Co. I remember having walking patrol in the housing area from 2000 - 0200 hours. Also lived in the castle while I worked as an MP Investigator. Really enjoyed the time in Germany.
I know this post is mine years old but, do you remember the spring of 77. I believe it was May 2 . In the kasserne an outdoor concert. Could have even been Joe Walsh maybe. I remember spring like weather. I awoke the next morning.. SNOW on the ground .
I did also--HQ battery, 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 3rd Artillery 12/1958 thru 1/1961.....The only other outfit stationed there at that time was the 51st Infantry.....
Thanks for the video, I was stationed there 1963-1965, Hq.co.16th Sig.Bn and then attached to the dental clinic (86th Med. Det) I had one of the best times of my life with very good army buddies
wow thanks for a trip down memory lane. We lived in Butzbach for 2 1/2 years. I was looking for the school mascot for a project and I found your videos. Such memories come back. We were there in the last 1960s.
83-86, At first we were 509th Ord Det. , then GCo. 122nd Maint. Bn, then we became E Co, 4th Spt Bn. Great bunch of soldiers and friends. I had a great time. Was there this summer in August 2010 and barely recognized the place. Thanks for the video! I lived in Wetzlar on the economy and still stay in touch with my landlord. Someone mentioned Licher bier in their comments - a headache in every bottle...oh but it was so good getting there!
I loved Licher - well after several hang overs I did - LOL - I was 2/3rd FA 83-86 - been looking for some old friends from that time Burt Steele or Paul Dieckmann - if you see this post please reach out to me...
83-85 G Co 122nd Maint here 509th was from swingin budingen Covert was my roommate he was a 509th guy and I drove for 1st Sgt Bussell the last 6 months or so before leaving for Fort Campbell
The Barracks and enlisted club is gone but the Gym which they built when I was there is still standing. And the entrance to the Kaserne changed, when I was there It was on the main road, and the kasernenstrasse you was walking down was forbidden to us. Thanks for the video would love to go back one day. Used to hang out at the EKU which was on that main road. Many trips on the bahnhoff to Frankfurt.
loved it there was stationed there from Jan.1967 to Jan. 1969 with the 28th ordnance co. I worked in motor pool .My oldest sun was born there. Would love to get in touch with others who served about time.
Thank you for posting this. I was in the Unit Police during Sep 58 and March 60. Originally I was assigned to the 36th Armored Inf. in Ayers Kaserne . I had guard duty and maed Colonels orderly one day. he asked if Id want to become a UP. I said yes and I was assigend to Lt. Angus McDonald in Butzbach. he was the CO of the UP platoon. I was in the motor patrol unit. That fountain holds memories. I knew a German woman named Giesla E.( amptgasse4) Her dad was killed in front of it.
I was stationed there in Aug 1968 in the 28th Ordnance Company. In Sept of 1968 we move to McCully Barracks in Wackernheim am Rhine. Butzbach was like walking through a National Geographic magazine. Very Beautiful town. The Autobahn to Giessen was like on IH 10 going north into Seguin, Texas. In Giessen what were the upside down icecream cone structures made of concrete? I guess they were from WWII.
I was stationed in Butzbach in 1975 and 1976. 2/3 FA, M109A1s. I remember going to Schmiedes bar and drinking that good German beer. Great times there.
76-79 Leicher on tap at Schmiedes .Good times, met a girl named Ocean . Never will forget. That's when we learned what a real discotek was. ABBA was pops with the locals. Ouzo was the ladies drink . Rumplemintz, and Schmiede himself would say , "try this. It is a sunuvabeech." And stupid me would try it. And then I would have to get back through the gate. And act straight.
I enjoyed your video, but at the same time it made me sad. I lived in Butzbach back in 1981-1985, I miss & loved Germany very much. My now ex was stationed at the "rock" Thanks for the memories!!
was there for 10 months drove a wrecker to recover broken down vehicles then we moved to wildflicken, i ran the wrecker through the gate and tore down part of the wall you see that has been replaced, used to be a theater on the left, i ran the projector there in76 showed jaws bout a 100 times
I was stationed with the 564th MP Co. '78-'79 (Johnson married Booth, did not work out but I did get a wonderful, healthy son from the marriage. ) I certainly remember Freeman and Byrne and still have partying pics😉 I recall how lovely all of the miniature rose fields were! I also loved the restaurant, something called Verb (or close to it) that had the wonderful schnitzel. Yes, Butzbach was a beautiful place to live. I miss it too. .
I was stationed their from 1985 to 1989 in Echo 122. I loved the town. It had everything one needed to enjoy Germany and was central to many other points of interest. I also went to the PLDC there as well.
+Carlos F .. So you remember 1SG Smith, SFC Vasquez, SSG Barrs, SPC Tebeau, SSG Wagner, SPC Bazermore, SGT Marvets or a SPC Beaver who were in the Chapparal Repair Section??
+Trevor Bacio ....Yes I do. Barrs stayed in Germany. I reached out to him via email some time ago. Tebeau lives in Taylor Texas which is 8 miles from me. I don't see him. I just know he is there. Mr. and Mrs. Marvets lives in Round Rock Texas. We are friends in Facebook. I'm connected to Beaver through FB as well. I have not heard from Wagner. I remember that I started a problem when I wrote my congressmen about how they were treating some of the soldiers. I have not heard about Smith. I think he retired in Montana.
really neat video. music was right on. i grew up in germany (all over) in the 60's. pops didnt want tto leave. i joined the air force and went back during the late 70's
I was at Ayers Kaserne and went through PLDC in 84. Figures my first weekend there was the weekend I had tickets to Monsters oF Rock concert in Karlsruhe and wasn't allowed off base.
Glad I found this - thanks for sharing. I was with the 564th from 1978 to 1981and I must say I really miss Butzbach. The people I met there were great and I have a lot of fond memories from there. The military life was crap but outside the barracks it wasn't so bad. My favorite hangout there was the Oberbayern. Wonder if it's still around?
Thanks so much for the video. I was stationed in HHB 2/3 FA at Schloss 1983 to 1985 before moving to Kirchgoens. This video brings back so many memories. I wonder if Gildo's Pizza is still on the corner near EKU 28 bar?
I got married there back in 1977 with a German wife. We had some good times, unfortunately we got divorced 9 years later. My memory is always full of cheer and happiness, thank u for posting this video. believe it or not, i used to live in the castle, it was big, nope, no elevators, had to use the stairs, had to be careful when i came back from partying, before i got married. heheh. i will always love Butzbach, Germany.
1:23 this crossing has changed a lot since a view years. At the corner on left hands side where the "Butzbacher Farbenfabrik", this building doesn't exist anymore and there is a very huge residential complex. On right hands side where the old "Volksbank"-Building was, there is a big modern house also with beautiful apartments on the upper floors. 2:43 the "Rathaus" changed a lot too. The wood isn't dark brown any more, rather light gray. this sucks, but that is probably more authentic and supposedly corresponds more to the original.
Always loved the Marktplatz at Butzbach. Such neat architecture and history. I was stationed at The Rock but the wife and I lived in a "garage-converted-to-apartment" in Butzbach in 1972 down by the Autobahn near the Polizei Amt. We moved closer to post in Niederkleen in 1973.
Hi, I grew up in Butzbach (born 1973) and I really do miss all of you! There was so much life going on because of the US Army and because of all of the Americans living in Butzbach, Friedberg and Giessen. I remember walking through the forrest during a large "military exercise" to admire all the machinery and to ask for some "real American chocolate".
I was in butzbach in 1982-1984..... I remember kids coming up to the woods outside of butzbach when we did training there. We would give them stuff all the time. Great times
reference to ejergens comments, i remember Paprikas, small gasthaus, they were greek, awesome gyro's or suzlakis they were called in my days from 1973 to 1978. i visit that place almost every weekend that i became like a member of the family and treated me as such. one son was the same age as me and his younger brother was 14, they are like brothers to me. The owner would actually walk me back to the barracks when i got pass tipsy. i call him Papa, To me, They are still family.
You brought back some memories. I was a 1St Lt. in 28th Ord co. in 1967. We lived in Roman Way.I do not remember the bldg. number but it was tward the rear and on right side of the main road in. My child was born in Frankfurt Gen. THANKS
To Rick Heniges, guess I don't remember you, was in HHB myself survey section, 4th floor with the animals "78 & 79" ... The 4th floor use to throw Beer bottles at the 564th MP Co. green dodge dart cars - oh what a bunch ... Cheers !!!
I was there . My room was right next to the tower. I remember corrigated marble floors in the halls Boston was the top band then Van Halen just erupted. 76-79. B3/59 ADA .Schmede's for Leicher on tap.
In 1985 The 564th MP Co, part of the 709th MP Bn / 18th MP Bde was on the Schloss. The 202 MP Co was in Giessen same battalion. 709th MP Bn and 18th MP Bde were both on the Gibbs Kaserne Frankfurt
It was great to see the main square in Butzbach. I was there in 1980 for reception. I was later stationed at the rock. I spent some time at the main square waiting on taxi's to get back to Ayers Kaserne. It looks much like it did in the early 80's. We had to go to Butzbach to get a train to Frankfurt and the red light district, he,he.
Looking for folks from the 2/3rd field artillery unit circa 1983-1986 - if you see this post please reach out to me... Burt Steele or Paul Dieckmann - are either of you out there???
I've got most of you guys beat! I was stationed here from Aug. 69 until Christmas Eve 1970. I was the company clerk for the 70th Transportation Company. I've got a ton of memories of this place. Sad to see that the Kaserne itself is no more. Why did they tear down the castle? I believe it was 13th Century! No sense going back, nothing is left!! Rats!! I won't miss that chow hall however!!. LOL.
I was stationed there 1985-1988 564th Mp Co. Our building was right by the main gate. I believe it was a 4-5 story building. Next to the bowling alley and gym. And the Women were living in the old castle.
Butzbach was a great place to be stationed. I lived in Volperthausen government leased housing.it was a 4 plex. The people there were friendly. 1985-88 was a great time there. And now I'm 50 where has time gone.
I was station at the rock in 76 went to butzbach to the "club" remember those dog sandwich the Arab,s made and on the base they had a repair place to fix your private car I had a BMW I was working on the head left it out side lot till next morning the idiots crush it they though it was abandoned man that car ran fast ,,fun times now back then couldn't wait to get back to the world,,had my freedom wheels on my greens
Yes I was once on the autobahn when I watched a three finger car cruncher demolish a perfectly good Mercedes because it was abandoned for about an hour. Anything not moving is considered trash
yeah I lived in roman way village 1976-77 and had a blast I want to give a shout-out the all those people who knew all about thye birdcage and the apple orchard
To Indlestat: I'm afraid your name escapes me at this time. Forty years ago, and a stroke nine months ago will do that I'm afraid. Too bad they tore the place down a few years back. It would have been fun to travel back in time. The 70th moved up to Giessen in the early 70's and evertually moved back to the states I believe. I think they even did time in Iraq. Thanks again for your commo.
Until I left Butzbach some twenty years ago the only radio station I listened was AFN, every now and then did I sneak into the local PX to buy some cans of "Dr Pepper" with money I exchanged at the local bank. A lot of nice memories!
Indlestat: Yea, well working in the Orderly Room as long as I did I heard many things that others did not. And yes, the 70th was always in the top 2 as far as performance was concerned. That was even true long before we showed up' I googled 37th Trans GP 106th Trans Bn, 70th Trans Co. a while ago and came up with all of the history of the 70th. Very interesting. I was'nt a trucker in the company, but I did purchase the official jacket of the 70th. I still have it. How can I get a picture to you?
Ok, I teared up a bit. I was involved in the turnover of Schloss to Hessen. Ex-Mayor Dieter Menk probably knew what was in store; Butzbach wanted to turn Schloss into a park but the state of Hessen laughed at them wanting funding & pumped it full of Ausländer instead. The pinko Mayor of Friedberg saw what happened and suddenly went from "Yanqui RAUS!" to "Ami!", and that SoB delayed the turnover by a couple of years.
Hey Edd, I was in the 16th a decade after you (1971-1972). When I look at videos such as these, all kinds of emotions come flooding in. A lot of nostalgia for sure.
