In this video I'm sharing Schmincke's Liquid Charcoal, a clean, dust-free alternative to traditional Charcoal. The three distinct charcoal colors are made by charring fruit seeds in barrels. Grape Seed Black has a cold black-grey tint with blue undertones. Cherry Pit Black is more of a warm brown, and Peach Stone Black works well as a neutral black or grey. Let's get swatching.

Having a couple of blacks around is very handy. Sometimes I like an opaque black (carbon black) sometimes something like these where the washes are just so beautiful.

I have been collecting black and grey watercolors for a while now when I find a great sale. I want to do a video exploring them along with how they mix with other colors. Thanks for the reminder, it is going on my RU-vid list!

Oh, I just picked up a tube of Peach Stone. Very fun!❤ I did a quick Swatch and found that when dry they do rub off/ smear by themselves, but when mixed with watercolors they are very stable. They don't erase well but they lift well with water... Mixing peachstone with lemon yellow makes a beautiful green!

All of them mixed with yellow make the most organic, nature like greens. Glad you had fun playing with these unique charcoals.

This was fun! I love experimental videos like this. In my experience, it's better to work with these straight out of the tube vs letting them dry in half pans. They dry rock hard and are darn near impossible to re-wet. I was able to mix them into watercolors successfully, but the graphite will still come off, so paintings may need a fixative. Thanks for this video!

I do remember the half pan experience of these was not nice, thanks for the reminder!

Thank you for including the information about not easily rewetting these. It will effect how I decide to use these.

I am very happy that you explored these.. I have them and they are truly beautiful. I also use some Cretacolor charcoal sticks and use them for a little more color. There is a product called "Liquid Pencil" by Derivan that have a bit of a tint to them. They come in about 5-6 colors such as red, sepia blue - all with a dark greyish cast. There is even a yellow. The Derivan group has two types - permanent and rewettable - so they are the same material in different binders. Jackson's has them if you want to give them a go. They do have a bit of a graphite sheen though (Just sayin' ! HA!) They can be used along with watercolors for beautiful granulation effect, I think. The granulating effect is due to the size of the graphite pigments. They like to settle on the paper and you can see even more of an effect on a cold press paper such as you are using. It also lifts beautifully because it is non-staining. You should be able to actually erase out highlights, too, with a Mono Zero eraser. It is pretty cool stuff. I love the monochromatic effects for a nice change. They are quite nice. I have so many supplies that I would love to use more and I love seeing demos, as it is very encouraging.

I have the Liquid Pencil set from Derivan, just haven't explored it yet. It is going on my RU-vid list, thanks for the reminder Sheila. I didn't even think about an eraser DUH, need to do that on my samples and see if it lifts with these charcoals. You are so helpful my friend.

Ohhhh they are so moody! ❤ I love that they are made from the fruit pits! Hard to choose a fave. Do they feel different from liquid graphite, such as ArtGraf for example? That does dry down shiny but its interesting to work with nonetheless, as you don’t ever get really dark value shades.
@kellyhoernig
@kellyhoernig 10 месяцев назад
Yes, the fact that these were created from fruit pits was so intriguing that is why I just had to buy them. I have only used these so I can't really say anything about ArtGraf, sorry.

You are very welcome! I haven't played with ArtGraf because they just seem clunky to me. I guess I could cut up some chunks and put them into half pans for easier usage but then again, I have so much to experiment with already and the colors really don't speak to me. If anyone knows about this, please let us know below.

I've found that to make Graphite WC shine, you'll need to rub the back of a spoon over the area, when it's dried, that you want to shine ..... it's worked with the Kuratake Graphites (LOVE that product) .... it would be interesting to see if it also worked with Schmincke liquid graphite ;)
