The Mix-Pre series are just amazing because of all the little things it does well. Everything is so customizable. It looks so simple but it's quite powerful and amazing. I bought it over a Zoom just because I felt it was something I would not outgrow as fast as I might with a Zoom.

Great! Congratulations with this setup. Can’t wait to hear some recordings. Btw: the Zoom F6 has 10 customizable headphone presets. Set them in the menu and than press the headphone volume wheel the choose. Have fun recording 🎧🎤🎉

would it be possible to use Cinela to house all this setup? I find the wind rejection with Cinela to be much better.

thanks for the video! Was considering purchasing Cyclone. I'm afraid the headphone preset for rear doesn't really work as it suppose if you have Side on the left and Mid on the right channels. As MS matrix expects Mid channel first and Side (fig8) as a second (which it duplicates and reverse phase on one copy). I also have Schoeps DMS setup with Sound Devices, and I found that the best practice is to plug Mid mic on CH1, Rear mic on CH2, and FIG8 on CH3. Then you can make headphones presets 1/3 MS, 2/3 MS (for rear monitoring) and 1,2/3 MS for both. And this channel layout Front/Rear/Side you can later feed into free Schoeps DMS plug-in in some DAW to convert it to quad, or 5.0 or stereo, because the plug-in expects this exact layout.

How do you get a stereo image if the figure 8 is a mono mic?

Hi Alex, you need to create the stereo image in post. Search for how to process MS recordings ( or DMS)

Hi Marcel, very interesting video. I have just bought the Zoom F6. As you say in the video, I can only link channels 1 and 2 in the Zoom F6, but not 1 and 3. Does that mean that the Zoom F6 is unusable for DMS recording or is it just less convenient to use (meaning that one has to set gain for each channel separately but in the end, one can bring the separate files from each channel into the Schoeps plugin and get to the same final result)? The Zoom F6 manual does not offer much help, beyond a very brief mention of MS recording under the link settings.

Hi Martin. I think so too. I haven't tried it yet with the F6 but I guess this is one way. I also thought maybe I try the ambisonic link setting and just erase channel 4. Not sure if that would work but maybe? :)

I can't answer this question because I don't know how serious you are with sound recordings. If you only do it as a hobby and you record only time a month, no upgrade needed. But for every day recording, I would upgrade but also get a better microphone.

I've noticed you've been using Sound Devices Mix Pre6ii a lot more lately over your Zoom H8, do you think it is a lot better, would you say it's a better choice?

You mean the Zoom F6? Not at all. I use both recorders for different reasons. For example the F6 is for VR ambisonic sounds and the SD MixPre 6ii for DMS. Stereo recordings I do with both.

What a desireable setup. You have panned the 8 to center, right? So dont you hear it then in Preset 3 on both ears? I need to test what the HP presets are doing there :)

good stuff. doesn't your headphone preset #2 have the mid & side flipped the wrong way? i.e. the fig 8 needs to be on R and the rear on L.

No. That should be fine. Figure 8 is channel 2 and rear is channel 3.

Don’t you have a lot of reflections from setting up the two cardiods like that? On the front cardioid the sounds from the right get blocked by the rear mic. And visa versa for the rear.

I am surprised the two cardioid mics aren’t placed in the clips so that rather than face to face they are butt to butt. Then it seems they would not interfere with each other’s patterns.

It's important when recording any multi mic setup how you set the angles and distances of the capsules from each other, in double mid-side its important for true surround that the capsules are as close to each other as they can be or you would end up with a "hole in the middle" kind of feel , The capsules would be too far apart if they were butt to butt. Think of the difference between say an x-y stereo pair and a spaced pair technique when recording, the spaced pair gives you a wide stereo image but it definitely lacks some emphasis in the middle and doesn't translate to mono very well whereas the x-y gives you a more narrow feel. I hope this makes sense!

What is actually the difference between DMS and VR recordings? What are DMS recordings used for? I mean I don't even really know what the D stands for :D The M is mid and the S is side... :D

I am getting the nagra vi or vii. The vii only has two channels. Is it possible to get a cable that takes all three dms channels and convert them into on xlr input?
