That's a very good question! I personally don't know, so I asked a friend about it. I'll get back to you on that when he responds.

So, you aren't the only one asking this question. Fire safety professionals are also wondering the same question, so research is likely to be done on the subject in the near future. In the meantime, they recommend a partial (evacuating the part of the building being affected by the fire) or phased evacuation sequence (evacuating in "chunks", first the affected, then towards areas that are not affected) to maintain social distancing during fire drills. These tend to be more complex, but in many cases it will get the job done.

Bousai Guy for us they just did it like normal but everyone of course had to have their masks on and they only had us physically distanced only maybe 3 feet apart.

@@BousaiGuy In our area fire marshal says fire drills will continue as normal. But people still stay away from other people.

Bring the concern to your school administration. My old school was experiencing a similar issue. Whenever the push the drill button, we would have certain alarms go off and not others. They would flash but no sound and none of the voice evacs would go off either. I brought this to not only my schools attention but the district as well as the state fire marshal and they are now activating the pull stations for each drill.

I agree with @Follower Of Christ with this one - bring the situation up to the administration. It's best practice for drills to simulate everything that what actually happens in an emergency.

Same. Our high school got renovated a year ago and in some rooms the strobes would flash but no sound. They told me they use a pull station for fire drills so something might be wrong then///

They have, in fact, been conducting drills while we've been virtual (for faculty who's working there). I'll be going to in-person school soon, so I'll have to see what it's like.

I back in in person school and I am doing drills probably on Thursday or Friday because I only go 2 days a week and it’s drill week and I Hope the fire drill happens at lunch or somethin 😃😀😐🤔

It's to notify trailers. The trailer fire alarm systems are not connected since they're separate from the building.

If the problem is due to the unexpected onset of the alarm, you could use headphones to block out the sound. There may be times when they may be allowed to warn you in advance. If you see your security or custodial personnel enter your dorm, watching them activate the pull station may help too. Of course if they have one while you’re asleep, it’s kinda hard to predict in advance but if you hear walkie talkies or keys Clinging that might give you a clue. When I was in high school and lived in a group home, one of our security officers would come in our house around 5 o’clock in the morning. As soon as he would turn on his radio and heard him open the pull station, the strobes would flash a few times, then the horns would start then we would get out of bed and evacuate. Thankfully, they only did that four times a year. Try to remember that the purpose of a fire drill is to see if the building can be evacuated in a quick and orderly manner in the event of an actual fire. Hope this helps.

Interestingly, it seems that the exit path was meant to go up, which I do feel is rather unusual. I'll have to look into that.

Are they planning on giving students a choice to come back, idk we had the choice to stay virtual or return to campus but idk they might be doing different things for y’all’s district.

@@BousaiGuy Oh okay,I chose to go back and they might handle fire drills different if they do give the option but for us it’s not much of a change besides masks but the evacuate the whole building and try to distance us 3-5 feet but idk we have only had 1 fire drill so far and we were most likely supposed to have one this week but we didn’t so I’m guessing next week.

I activated the alarm this month. As for the preannouncement, I'm honestly not sure - I think it was something we haven't done in a long time. I do recall him mentioning that the people weren't going to take it seriously (which, granted we're 7 months into school is reasonable). This building does have voice evac, however it's only in the areas of assembly (i.e. the gyms, cafeteria, and fine arts buildings). If we get back into the building, I'll try to get to record some of the voice evac alarms, but that might be a bit of a task.

@@BousaiGuy I’m not sure if I will be allowed to record. But we will be conducting a fire drill at the hospital I work at in May, and the Safety manager told me I could pull the alarm and open the pull station. Never pulled one because I know it’s illegal unless you have permission. Looking forward to it.

I hate fire drills bc of the fire alarm i dont care if they are for safety im in high school i know what to do when the alarm goes off besides it gives me the worst anxiety ever

me to but we have to do it to keep us safe it is scary at first but after a while it gets better
