Such a wonderful performance, full of grace and charm! Maestro Chamayou really made this arrangement sing! Liszt's love and devotion for Schubert's music is such a happy chapter in music history - it yielded so many treasures for concert pianists (and for audiences of course, but I imagine it must be so much fun playing these wonderful Lieder).

Some people say it is played to fast, but also in the Schubert original the piano takes the short notes.

BRAVO!

While there's no question that the playing is solid, the spirit of this execution has far more to do with Lisztian pianism than with Schubert's original Lied for voice and piano. It seems to me that the grace and the charm of the song have been sacrificed on the altar of powerhouse virtuosity.

feeling this a bit too - it doesn't have the overwhelmingly deep soulful utterly swooning beauty of Shubert that inspires almost automatic LOVE.

Can anyone translate what he was saying before playing the encore? I get the gist that he's introducing the piece, and mentioned Liszt, but what made the audience laugh? I'd like to know.

I'll play a piece by Schubert, arranged by Liszt, (his accent is too strong for me to understand his little joke), which is called, on the water to sing.

What does the pianist say at 00.37 in German which amuses everyone, can someone please translate it for me?
@pascalcs

Martin Edwards he says: “and now a song from Schubert, overhauled by Liszt. It is a bit more tranquil “ ( audience laughs) .
@gergelykiss
@gergelykiss 4 года назад
He says "this one is a bit calmer" - he is referring to the two Liszt-pieces he performed earlier on in the concert: the Hungarian Fantasy and the Totentanz - two heavy metal works, compared to which even Beethoven's 5th would be a bit calmer :)
