I think its his tragic fate - people are forever trying to find traces of his mental illness in his music, calling it unbalanced, excessive or overly emotional. Yet it is "romantic" in its finest form - emotional yes - but finely crafted, melodic and warm - be it his Symphonies, his piano-works or his concertos. Thank you for bringing this up!
Good question. Maybe the original poster "loganfruchtman" didn't really mean "hate" in its hostile form, but maybe "loving less" than other symph composers in the LvB class. I don't agree with his adjective "underrated" since all the four are being performed by all great orchestras in their regular repertoire.@@Canufindnow
@@Canufindnow Probably people who did not make an effort to understand him. I love his works, & his wife's, in part because I appreciate some of the feelings which propelled them. His violin concerto is a study of obsession & frustration. Most people whose mental health is declining are very aware of it & typically find little help, relief or understanding.
My favorite Schumann symphony played by what has become my favorite orchestra, regardless of the identity or gender of theconductor. I first came to know the piece through a Klemperer LP back in the 1970's. As always in the big German works, he really laid down the law. Much slower than here, but with that kind of power that only he could bring. My tastes have evolved since, and I've come to prefer it as here, and especially as performed by these musicians.
As a hobby orchestra player: To the professionals. How do you recognize anything in the conducting of Anja Bihlmaier? I can bareley see the counting times of the bars in her conducting. Are you guys not needing those? As a drummer and percussionist I would surely mishit every stroke, if she was my conductor.
Apparently there's no such thing as a lousy orchestra in Germany. This is an area where the German notoriously meticulous attention to detail is amply rewarded.
The recording balance is simply not right. There is a spot microphone on the flutes and oboes that is turned up too loud. There is no way the flutes should be drowning out the violins, but there are times when they do just that. Never mind that they are magnificent wind players, they need to be heard in proper context of the full orchestra. So far as I can tell, the performance meets the usual high standard of this orchestra, but the faulty balance is quite annoying.
I shall check with my own score but I guess my impression has to do with the unusual balance between strings and other sections of the orchestra. This may come from the quite unusually low number of strings is (probably around forty) or from the sound recording.
call me old-fashioned (I'm a young person in my 30's) but i'm still getting used to seeing a woman symphonic conductor on the podium in this post-Covid world we live in. I firmly belive in meritocracy and not trophy based on gender or race.
