You can say what you want about the interpretation, or, for example, the tempi, but the quality of orchestral playing here is simply magnificent!

Urbanski is one of my favorite conductores these days. The perfect combination of passion, rigour and charisma. And when I met him after an unforgettable Shostakovich 5 he was really kind! Stunning Tchaikovsky with one of Europe’s most wonderful orchestras!!!

During, but mostly after his catastrophic and short marriage to Antonia Milyukova Tschaikowsky wrote this music. It tells us about destiny, dreams, longings, but also about sorrow and a hopeless situation. We dont need to know his biography to love this music, but maybe it helps us a little bit. Wonderful playing from hr-Sinfonieorchester under Krzysztof Urbanski!

If Tchaikovsky's intention was to "transmit" joy in the finale by orchestrating the popular song "Я иду, иду погуляю" then, he made it. The contrabass player seems happy, smiling at 39:13". Eloquent performance.

Well, I'm an Australian (in Melbourne) and while I'm very proud of our orchestra, I think this orchestra is among the very best in the world. I wish I could hear them live, but thoroughly enjoy their very frequent RU-vid postings (not only performed, but also recorded with the highest quality). I almost shudder to think that, when I was very young, our countries were at war. The foibles of humanity. Your comment is spot on.

Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt melodisch. Im Kontrast klingt der dritte Satz echt beweglich und auch erfreulich. Endlich kommt der letzte Satz voller Bewegung und Leidenschaft. As always the orchestra (and the production) are sparkling. I have to say however that the first movement lacked the 'con anima' for me - the generally slow tempo seemed to somehow nullify the tension; lethargic even. Meh, aesthetic preference perhaps, but it does need the 'anima'!!
@drgustavbakter4735

To put it more bluntly the firsr movement was bland to the point of boredom and lacked any kind of tension. Another example, I'm afraid, of a young conductor striving to be original and reinvent the wheel.

No offence...: Why is a conductor really needed? I mean, while practicing your part (doesn´t matter which instrument you do play) you know very well when it´s your turn to kick in. Your sheets tell you everything else you need to know. Am I missing something vital to his part? o.0 Is the conductor some kind of relic from the past?
@jonvielhaber8703
@jonvielhaber8703 5 месяцев назад
I think it's a little bit more complex than that... You're not wrong about every musician (ideally) knowing their Part and the music, but still the Orchestra's Work is to portrait the interpretation and the Vision of the conductor. He's the one connecting his and every musicians mind.
@late8641
@late8641 4 месяца назад
The conductor rehearses the orchestra and is responsible for the interpretation. It wouldn't work if all musicians played according to their own interpretation, that would just be chaos, and the orchestra needs help in rehearsing pieces. And trust me, big orchestras would fall apart without a conductor. You can play Baroque and Mozart without a conductor, but that's about it.

Peter Tschaikowsky, who was actually called Petro Tschaika. He was Ukrainian by origin, but he was a chauvinist. He treated Ukraine as a land where you can just have a good time. But there is still very interesting information... Peter 3 was born in Germany. His father was German. The wife of Peter 3 was the German princess Sophie Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst. We know her as Catherine the Great. They had a son Peter the first. Who chose a wife from Germany again. Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg, who we know as Maria Feodorovna. Their children: Alexander the first, who again chose a wife from Germany. Luise Marie Auguste von Baden. She was Empress of Russia. The second son is Nicholas the First. Who also chose Frederica Louise Charlotte Wilhelmina Hohenzollern (Feodorovna). They also gave birth to a son Alexander the second. And this one chose a German. Maximilianne Wilhelmine Auguste Sophie Marie. And so on... I will only add that without the Moon there would be no life on Earth. Because it will start to accelerate and become unfit for life. Matriarchy is an unchanging constant. And this explains why the German orchestra performs the music of russian composers while they are destroying many nations. Imperialistically.

Do you ever think about the fact that russian music from tschaikowsky, prokofjew, rachmaninow etc. is renowed, loved, enthusiatic and meaningful for the musical era in which they were written that there are self-evident established in the repertroire of every good orchestra world wide. Politcs are not the main reason for this phenom
@Turritopsis.Nutricula

@@passo5873 This is not the time to flirt with the aggressor. Now are those terrible times when it is important to quarantine the culture of the occupier. There is a lot of music in the world that is interesting to perform and listen to. But russian music is performed by European orchestras much more often than before. By flirting with the aggressor, the orchestra administration demonstrates its OWN position. This is very serious. One thing is to listen to any music at home. And it's another thing to demonstrate it to the whole world. And the aggressor himself perceives this as moral support. Realizing that almost all empresses were German. A two-sided game. Two-faced dragon.

@Turritopsis.Nutricula
@Turritopsis.Nutricula 8 месяцев назад
@@granturquhart8501 russian culture? Try to research this question. Just try to Learn about artists, writers, composers, musical composition techniques. And you will have a fatal disappointment. Since 70+% are not of russian origin, they were forcibly transferred to the empire. A lot of things, just stolen. Like Ripin's works. There is no point in mentioning Bulgakov, who was born in Kyiv, even though he was a chauvinist. Richter is not a russian pianist either. Dokshitser is also not a russian trumpeter (the most famous academic trumpeter of all time). And many others. Because this is an absolutely typical model of insinuation of the empire. Steal and recruit for money or under moral pressure. Therefore, there is no great russian culture in the world. It's all an illusion. There is enough information about this on the Internet. It only takes a few tens, hundreds of hours to understand everything.

Agreed! All too often the conductor, soloist(s), and orchestra members are praised, but the excellent work of the camera crew goes unacknowledged. Some other venues also have excellent camera crews - the Concertgebouw, for example. We take it so much for granted when watching many videos that it jolts us when excellent performances are captured with only one fixed camera, which all too often gives us a view of the conductor's back.

How many times have I already listened to this rendition? I dont know. Sometimes I think it is a symphonie for the bassoon, then for the oboe, then for the flute or for the clarinet. The only thing I know is that Tschaikowsky had a wonderful gift to lift up all the instruments in an orchestra in full sight. Something that the cameras in this uptaking fully understand. The result is splendid. Together with this wonderful orchestra and Krzysztof Urbanski this turns out to be the best interpretation of this 4:th Symphony I ever heard. Thank you all so much!

I count myself as a Tchaik fan, but can find the 4th uniquely grating among his symphonies- frankly among anyone's symphonies. KU's legato-laden management of the first movement here is superb, sewing all the crescendos into a whole of natural momentum where the drama does not overwhelm the feeling that we have not yet reached the end. This manner is evident even among the soloists (14:10). Really, I can't think of another performance I've liked any better for making this music sound cohesive (and grim!). As usual, the hrSinf sounds fantastic.

Très sensible interprétation ; le 1er mouvement, d'une souplesse & 'une fausse modération distillant l'angoisse,, est un régal. Après quoi le charme est installé, & tout est merveilleux, jusqu'à la fin.
