Fugue (#1) on B-A-C-H, opus 60 by Robert Schumann.
Performed by David Kriewall on January 17, 2016 at St. Mark's post-Compline organ recital; recorded January 18, 2016 at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Seattle, Washington, USA.
Schumann admired fugues in general, and Johann Sebastian Bach in particular. In 1845, he began an intensive study of counterpoint, which resulted in his work "Sechs Fugen über den Namen BACH" (Six fugues on the name of BACH). Every fugue opens with the notes B-A-C-H (i.e., B flat, A natural, C natural, B natural). While certain aspects of these fugues are modeled on Bach's "The Art of Fugue," Schumann's characteristic Romanticism shines and exudes a lush, gentle sound.
