Want to give a shout out to filmmaker Anthony Ferraro for this film. He not only wrote and directed the film, but handled the VFX and editing. 🙌 He has been a DUST fan for a long time and an active member in the Portal. We hope to see many more fans inspired to create sci-fi, congrats!

The Blue stone tree, or Wawō'na tree, was a famous giant sequoia that was found in Mariposa Grove, Yosemite National Park, California, USA, until February 1969. It was 227 feet (69 m) tall and 26 feet. (7.9 m) diameter at the base. The origin of the word Wawō'na is unknown.

ZSandmann Maybe she’s from a Vulcan-like race.🖖 or heck maybe she IS a Vulcan. Wouldn’t that be cool if this is actually set in the Star Trek universe? A major part of the franchise’s backstory is that Vulcans used to have emotions thousands of years ago in the distant past. Long before they learned how to suppress them with their powerful psychic abilities, in ancient times rather than shun all emotion, they celebrated the beauty of having emotions, similar to Spock’s estranged outcast older brother Sybok. Anyway it’s a fun theory.

I can't figure out why, but as soon as she planted the tree I found myself thinking "Ooh, is it going to grow into a Giant Sequoia?" Probably just a random lucky guess! I love the ending, this is a kind of sci-fi that I love and can really enjoy after the fact as well, thinking about the implications. First line of thought to pursue: are the "elf aerangers" going to come back for their filters some time? I guess the intent is for them to show up and collect when the select few come out of hibernation. Did something happen to them and they died out because of a failure of the hibernation system? Are they still in hibernation, and will some day be coming to get what they need to restore their world? Have they already come and gone again, taking what they needed without appearing to or interfering with humanity? I'm sure I'll think of more ideas to ponder later on... In any case, inspiring me to think like this is a sign of a great work!

This is one of the very few short Sci-Fi films that is worth watching. Most just impress you with graphics but have no complete, nor interesting, plot. Not only is this plot interesting, it's intelligent and the acting is very good. A truly great actor can say so much by just using their eyes and facial expressions. Steve McQueen, Melisa Tomei. This actress shows that skill. The director is also top notch.

I think I understand it! Her home planet atmosphere was suffering because it didn’t have enough oxygen, hence the “deep sleep” 1/3 of the residents had to be put under, (and when you’re in deep sleep you use less oxygen). He also called it the filtration system and that’s essentially what trees do, they provide oxygen and essentially filter the air for us. Without enough trees and greenery we wouldn’t have enough oxygen so the fact that that tree grew so big and tall and was unable to be chopped down meant it was continuously supplying oxygen. That could’ve been one of the last tree seedlings from her home planet and ensuring that it would take root on earth and be able to grow provides a filtration system for the air so earth never meets the same fate her planet has. Humans had no idea it was even a problem at this point, we weren’t even speaking clearly as shown by the barbaric person, but it makes me wonder if their planet was just so ahead of ours that they saved ours before we even knew we needed saving. Another thing that supports the theory is that you can see when she first gets up from the crash she has this breathing apparatus on and actually removes it and seems to take some nice deep breaths and appears relieved. This makes me think that the air on her home planet is unsafe to breathe in or is very low on oxygen and the soil there cannot sustain the trees needed to provide the air filtration they need. That is why she checks the soil to see if it’s able to support growing the tree and they are so relieved when they see that the soil is essentially fertile. Obviously the blue Stones protected it so there was no way that the tree could die which is pretty cool but it makes me think that with all this technological advancements it’s amazing they just really needed some dirt and some air. It’s easy to forgo sustainability where technology is concerned and they ultimately had to travel to a much less civilized planet essentially very early B.C. as shown by the wooly mammoths to get what they needed in order to survive. That cautions us on our emphasis on advancement rather than sustainability (hint hint our current planet). Since her planet realized the oxygen crisis they sent out multiple people with the tiny trees and the tools they needed to hopefully plant them on other planets so that the other planets won’t meet the same fate theirs did. The stones ensure that for years and years to come oxygen is provided and those from the deep sleep will eventually be able to woken up and can now come to earth. That is my theory anyways, but if anyone disagrees or thinks similar, feel free to comment :)

But she could simply have taken one of the already established sycamores and taken it back to her planet, well not with a busted ship. But she could have said to the annoying hologram "there are plenty of trees here. Send someone to pick a few up, no need to wait 4,000 years." And if their tree could thrived in an Earth environment, no reason to assume Earth trees wouldn't be able to essentially fulfil the same purpose on their home planet. Take a few dozen back to be safe. Also 3,800 years ago Humans had relatively advanced civilisations. We weren't all grunting and using stone spears. The Vedas are over 5,000 years old for a start. This short really fell... short of the usual standards.

A very nice introduction to a story that should develop in our own minds and shouldn't be followed-up upon by the filmmaker. Give a finger and the "fans" will take a hand and before you know it, as a filmmaker, you're stuck between the wants of the fans and a grudge to give-in and we'll end-up with a result that's dissatisfactory for all parties.

Hello Bobbie, what a lovely surprise. I just spoke the truth, you are absolutely, scintillatingly beautiful and you can also act. There’s definitely something about you. It’s very, very rare. You have that stillness that only the greats possess. Yet you can also move amazingly well and your ability to dance proves that. Stillness...Forest Whitaker, Benicio del Toro. Two absolute masters. A mere twitch of an eyelid. A flicker of a smile and the story pours from them to the observer. You have this. It’s a subtlety that is innate and cannot be learned. I expect huge things from you. I believe your heading straight for the top (hopefully a few little detours) but definitely to the top because you certainly have the talent and we deserve you! Your certainly one of the best Actors I’ve seen and you should believe in yourself because your dripping with absolutely solid talent, subtlety, natural beauty and that special stillness that’s a gift. Take care out there Bobbie. The World is an enormous place. Like I said, you are astoundingly beautiful, exquisite symmetry, beautiful movement and an unchecked rawness that’s completely exciting. I wish you well my dear girl and you deserve success. Be good and God bless. SJMM

Hello Bobbie, I hope the things I said are ok. It’s easy to say. For they are true. My only wish is to reinforce confidence in yourself. I’m not saying I think you lack it, definitely not. I’m just hoping that if you ever doubt yourself, that strange hesitation inside, that feeling of being anxious, then think of my words. I’m a complete stranger, one of thousands, probably millions who are exposed to you and you can have this affect? Absolutely! I’m a single player in your entire audience and you certainly touched me. That’s your gift. Don’t doubt yourself. Don’t! You should be confident without hesitation and you have everything it takes not to falter. You’ve got everything. Your a ‘real’ artist and you cover so many facets of your craft. You write, direct, dance and act. Harvey Keitel and Milla Jovovich, they have that special stillness. You share it. Your in the same league and it’s a small club for the truely gifted. There are a few others but the rest are pretenders and your potential is yet to be fully realised. It’s very exciting. Go forth and conquer lady! SJMM
@moogybannahilstopaflingon6803
@moogybannahilstopaflingon6803 5 лет назад
Charlize Theron, Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton...Masters of stillness. Your part of it. Your in their league and they in yours. There’s galaxy’s full of stars, billions and billions of them. Countless zillions of them. Then there’s this little constellation, out there by itself, outshining all the stars in the heavens. Special, beautiful, rare. A collection of all that’s delicate, magnificent and indescribable. Magic stars. And your a part of it. I’ll tell you this, and please don’t get me wrong. If your ever struggling, I’d do some music for you. For free. For nothing. I don’t think you’ll struggle. But with a lot of projects of different sizes, timings and complexities, things can get tight!!!! I’d do it for nothing, nothing at all. Not for me. Not to profit with money or to make my name. You wouldn’t even have to write my name. I’d do it to see you succeed. I’d do it as a stranger and as a friend in complete anonymity and only to see you progress and to take pressure off. That’s if you ever need any help. I’m sure your surrounded by support and talent but I promise you, it never hurts to have a little more in reserve and I’m am nothing if I’m not as good as my word. Just an offer. Put it in your memory bank if you choose. For down the track. Time for me to go. Take care of you. Always remember to take the time, with a firm eye on the future, take the time to look behind, even if it’s only a split second. There’s so many answers there. It’s the only thing we can really ever know...😊

Elves are nature lovers and protectors. However did no one else hear the guy say they would travel to earth to harvest the filters a.k.a. the trees. That means that at some point elves will deforrest our planet for their own needs. I love how this short mixed sci-fi and fantasy with a history twist. The nods and references to other fantasy and sci-fi works is excellent. A common ancestor for all of our species great stories as well as origins for many of our beliefs and ideologies.

@Acecool
@Acecool 4 года назад
They called it a filter. ie: air scrubber. Only 1/3 their population could be put in cryo of some sort while the trees filtered or cleaned or re-oxygenated their atmosphere to safer levels. My guess is they would let them spread rapidly in that soil and bring them back when small-ish... although the story line doesn't make sense.... much of our oxygen is from water based plant-life.... maybe they don't have water on their planet, but that doesn't make sense either. Maybe not as much - that could make sense... the actress is meh though. and the ears.. what the hell... they looked off-tone with her skin color, etc... should've just painted them blue and had the face stripe going onto the ears... at least that would've looked better than piglet color.
@dondragmer2412

But a 3800 year old tree is not old enough to have been planted in the Stone Age. The Stone Age ended about 10k to 15k years ago, though some stone age type cultures have persisted to near modern times. Perhaps the full grown sequoia tree in this film is the offspring of a much older tree or series of trees.

I really liked this one. I am from California, and I have visited and hugged and walked through some of the giant sequoias. I love the California Redwood. This story had mystery,suspense, apprehension, new tech toys, and a self-sufficient female lead. The blue-ish green about her eyes struck me as the residue from a pair of googles lost in the crash. I didn't quite understand the neanderthal threat,but I suspected this film takes up the question of how homo sapiens interacted with neanderthal. I loved the explanation for the mystery of the trees height and the stones at the base of the tree. I think the young lady was a subsequent Spock in appearance, or maybe a cross between the first Klingons and Yodarians. Very satisfying. Done well in a small set.

In a valley like this, at that distance, you would see bright flash just before the fireball, then a few moments later a deep "m80 in a trash can" type pop, followed by a reverberation of 3 distinct explosions that echo off the valley walls.
