If you were forced to flee your own war-ridden country, would you sacrifice what makes you human to survive? "How to be Human" by Bruno Centofanti
#DUST #scifi #shortfilm
More About How To Be Human:
In a world where artificial intelligence has dismantled the human contribution, Adelphe (Scottish BAFTA-winner, Sophie Kennedy Clark) has to help her sister Kimi (Louise Salter) to lose her humanity. Moreover, Kimi has to forget how to be human in order to fully disguise herself as an AI and survive in the only liveable place, “Cold City”. As they embark on this crossing, Kimi is forced to confront situations that put her sister, and her manufactured intuition, to the test. We learn through this unique perspective as we watch the two sisters pursue safety and refuge, made possible by the help and support of Maria (Les Misérables, Tony-award winner, Frances Ruffelle). In a world where the migration of displaced people is so present, this story reminds us of how being born in the right place and the right time can so often lead us to take our freedom and basic rights for granted.
Filmmaker's Statement:
As a highly passionate director and producer, I love to discover and tell stories. Storytelling is very much what drives me. My niche is in finding the surprising truth in human stories, to inspire people and to put them in touch with their humanity. I’ve been privileged as a film director to work with a wide and diverse spectrum of artists and subjects. I’ve traveled the world, freely immersing myself in societies, breaking barriers of class and culture. Being the grandson of a Jewish immigrant who buried her past in order to survive and only discovering my own roots later in life, the idea of telling the story of a young girl who needs to hide her identity in order to survive, feels personal, powerful and inspiring to me.
How to be Human is a visually compelling story that has many parallels with society today. It shows a dystopian society where humans have been superseded by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the survival of human identity relies on the dangerous crossing to an uncertain future. The Crossing is a pilgrimage where Kimi is forced to leave behind her memories, her experiences and her identity; in the hope that on the other side, things will be better. Will the crossing save her? Has Human freedom and love been lost forever? This is a vivid and relevant story for our times. In a world where the migration of displaced people is so present, this story reminds us of how being born in the right place and the right time can so often lead us to take our freedom and basic rights for granted. Intimate, poetic and life affirming, this isn’t just an incredible story of determination against all odds; we are exploring the precious and delicate nature of human existence and the values that make us who we are. Our aim is to provoke in the audience a great empathy for others and help to dissolve the refugee stigma.

I watched the audio description version of this that they released. It narrated more of what was in the human sister’s mind. From THAT version, I was able to clearly know the older sister was truly an Android and the younger girl was a human. Her opening line is “My name is Kimmy and I’m a human”. Clean, clear narration that cleans up any doubt. At first I assumed she was an Android that had “grown up” around humans too long. She even describes how Adelphi “is an Android”. The title doesn’t help at all. It’s not How to Be Human. It’s how to be an Android. Yes, I’m nitpicking now. But the opposite title and lack of clarity of the characters was where this film needed more work and thought. We don’t understand why Adelphi is “offline” and why she even needs to go through immigration. We don’t know how they met or why an Android like Adelphi would consider Kimmy a sister. We don’t know why the eye scanner doesn’t detect androids versus humans at immigration. We don’t know why androids would eat normal food like apples if it’s just for fuel. They would eat nutritional yeast and dry granola bars. So she was cleaned up by the cleaner and her skin painted. Who is going to keep painting her skin? Or are emotionless humans allowed and it’s an unspoken rule? This needed to be fleshed out much more. Yes, it’s cool. And yes I understand the general theme and storyline. But those little nuances left big holes. **Edit:** Ok, so I admit that I rarely read the description section in videos. In this case, the much-needed synopsis was there, “In a world where artificial intelligence has dismantled the human contribution, Adelphe (Scottish BAFTA-winner, Sophie Kennedy Clark) has to help her sister Kimi (Louise Salter) to lose her humanity. Moreover, Kimi has to forget how to be human in order to fully disguise herself as an Al and survive in the only liveable place, "Cold City".” I have watched this short 3 times now, each time with a little more insight than the time before. Yes, I can see now where there is enough implication that Kimi is human and Adelphi is AI. While there are certainly still questions that remain: * why are they sisters, * why do the people mill about in Cold City, * why was there enough gas in the car, * how did Adelphi get out without a status in the first place, * Is there any implied danger, other than dwindling resources, that prevents Kimi From living outside as that family, * do the drones also come and maintain the population by killing survivors, * Why go through the hassle if apples and firewood can be found outside. (There’s half the makings for fresh apple pie, right there) * what was the purpose of the drone repainting the image on the wall? And why not rebuild other areas properly? However, I am upgrading my opinion having read the description and listened to the audio version. Visually well implemented and on point acting. Consideration for diversity of cast. Great camera work. I wish they would continue fleshing out some of those points above and I could see a longer version of this hitting more mainstream audiences. (Thank you if you read all of this!)

nase bear thank you for the insight... I was a bit confused at first and thought that the sister was also human and that their humanity “killed “ the world and that by losing their humanity that evolved into a more high state... less emotion means less fighting, etc. I guess that’s one reason I love these films so much... everyone gets a different meaning... Although a few are waaaaay to vague. Cheers!

Thank you for taking the time and obvious care to write that. It made me even more impressed with the film, and I’m about to watch the audio descriptions version. I’d love to see the made into a fully fleshed out novel - or the story expanded into a full-length movie or series. Your analysis was thorough and fair, and prompted me to think about the points you raised more deeply - it definitely added to my enjoyment when I watched it the second time. I just hope I can turn down the gears in my head well enough to get a good night’s sleep :).

the girl in the beginning, the one who took her sister...at first I thought she was Drew Barrymore(for literally a split second) and then as I watched her saw how she could be a younger version of her if anyone ever did a movie where they needed a younger drew Barrymore without cgi. that girl could play the part!! I am obsessed with Dust! The first one I saw was shared on Facebook by a family member. It was the blue alien dudes in the ship collecting earth items. Still my all-time favorite though! I've stayed up too many nights to get just one more in. So many of these I would love to see full movies of! Total sci-fi lover! Well done Dust! Keep up the great work, it really is amazing!

Through teaching her sister not to eat like a glutton, or to not smile, the sister is still showing her a side of humanity, the immoral side. Instead of just walking and looking for little to no confrontation for another car, they chose to steal one from the family. "cold city" really stands for a place where humans have only allowed the dark seeded evils to continue in them. It isn't a place devoid of humanity, just devoid of humane actions.

I think what the older sister meant when she said that is that she smiles or frowns to let her sister know she understands the joke or agrees with her but it doesn't necessarily mean that what she said has invoked joy or sadness. She shows emotions but doesn't feel them. I saw the same trope used in another show or movie about androids where the android said something along the lines of.. *"a percentage of human communication is facial expression so we appear to illicit emotive responses but we are simply fulfilling your need for positive reinforcement."* It was said after the protagonist suggested an android had feelings for smiling at a joke.

This just simply wouldn't work because how our brains work. There would be a high mental illness rate among the population (depression, psychosis, skizo ... just to name a few ), we are naturally wired thanks to our ancestors to show feelings, and also to read them, it's a core function of a community. So, aborting/disabling this highly complicated mechanism would result in the defensive function of our bodies, which would result in a weakened immune system, mental issues, fatigue, poor productivity and eventually death... People fret nowadays at the fear or AI becoming self aware and taking over and here we a a contrasting film where we have intelligence been stripped down to an emotionless zombie... a very strange take on the future and a thought provoking concept.

Utopian cattle. It's not a new concept, really.

@@1SqueakyWheel I never said it was a new concept so slightly confused by your response, having said that though, can you name a mainstream film or series that has followed the same path because off the cuff I cannot think of one.

Oooooh, I really liked it. I wonder what happened before and what's gonna happen next. Yes, it might not be logical to go to live somewhere every sneeze will betray you, I assume there are no toilets and so on, but there's more to being human than snot and pee. So, I need to know why they put themselves in such a risk. It's not like there is food and warm baths waiting.

The difference between the androids and the humans is emotions, and the humans have self-destructed. I think our world needs to take emotions much more seriously so we can be wiser with them.

Soo..., either you live in post-apocalyptic Britain where humans have torn themselves apart with emotions, or in post-apocalyptic Europe where humans have suppressed themselves with emotionlessness?

Why survive to go to cold city? It didn't look that dangerous in the wasteland bit and you can be yourself.

Acceptance is the highest form of human need in a structured society. With that in mind, if entering a restricted area has been placed at the top of the want list, people will want in and they will convince themselves it is good.

@@kingwillie206 Until they get there and see. But in this case I think that if I had to hide I emotions just to get by in society I wouldn't. I'd rather be an outsider. If it was to infiltrate for another reason, maybe but the sort of aspirational drive to make me want to live in a cold emotionless society is one I personally cannot comprehend.

This is an interesting example of a perception of the world that is on display often these days. They believe some areas are "good" and people must struggle to get there from "bad" areas. They cannot fathom people struggling and working to develop their own functioning and prosperous society and creating their own "good" area.

Around the 225 mark, did anyone notice that neither girl is carrying the big bag. Yet when the little girl screams and the human girl runs to see what is going on, the android picks up the bag. I'm surprised no one said that in any of the comments. I didn't notice it at first either though.
