@@stevecavanagh8033 ISWYDT. I love that part fairly early on where he's reading the report, and about 98% of it is blacked out. Oh yeah -- _there's_ some useful information. "Here's your file! Go get 'em!" And alas, that's what's happening right now, throughout the Western world, and beyond. All that dystopian science fiction we read (or watched as movies) is coming true, right before our eyes. The Surveillance State, the threat of human-looking AI (well, AI itself!), this is all reality now. And the amazing thing is, the great majority of people don't bat an eye! We were warned a hundred years ago, and yet still we find ourselves treading that once-fictional path to our own destruction. If humans still _exist_ in another hundred years, what will they write about us ...

We are no longer far away from such states. We are moving further and further in that direction, further towards totalitarian systems, and nobody sees the danger. Or does nobody want to see it? A good film, an important film, but even something like that won't wake up the sleeping crowds.

What do you mean "...no longer far away..." from totalitarianism?? In the USA in certain states, we are already THERE! When the government begins to tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies. When the government encourages single parent households to receive assistance for lower income earners. Now, every household has internet and smartphones we ARE under surveillance RIGHT NOW whether you choose to acknowledge it or not...its just going to get worse with each passing law and year...

If that is too much for you, please do not expect me to answer you. Yes, I can imagine that the things you describe can exist in the United States of North America. I don't live there, so I can't judge. I live in Europe, and when I write that we are not far away from a new totalitarianism, then that also refers to Europe, especially since the film under which I wrote my comment also refers to a European state (France). Since, unfortunately, the vast, sleeping majority of people do not see - cannot see or perhaps do not even want to see - the path on which the states of Europe have embarked, nothing will change for the better in my lifetime. I am already old and will not have to experience the worst excesses that will occur, but my sympathy goes out to all those who are young today and who are running with their eyes open into a new ruin, a new totalitarianism, a new fascism. If nothing else, history has taught us at least one thing, and that is that we have never learned anything from history.

Yep, that's where we're headed at breakneck speed, alright ... along with the usual shrieks of "to protect our _democracy!"_ This was so very well done. I found the brief scene at around the 9:45 mark quite fascinating: where the public no doubt see modesty in this young man's expression, we as the audience know that it's actually guilt.

Damn...while I rarely comment on the films I watch on YT, this one is calling out to me to do so. Everything...and I damn well do mean everything from the story to the script, the layout to the cinematography, to the acting and especially the mother, this was one super effort and covered a topic known all too well to far too many people in today's world. Unfortunately, as so poignantly pointed out in the movie, there are far too many who are either blind or too damn dumb to see it. I've been around for several decades and trust me, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to see what's happening nowadays as we quickly approach this inevitability. Kudos to all involved in this production and for the sake of humanity, let's hope it'll open at elast enough eyes to make a difference.

What makes you think it was a curfew patrol? Remember the old man said he wanted them "locked up by dawn". Judging by the lighting of the scene it was well into the morning hours. I think the old man sent them to see what had happened. In other words, HE WAS A BIT LATE.

Powerful and terrifying. This movie is a reflection of where the world is at - and this is reminiscent of the world during the early-mid 1930s and the rise of Fascism in Europe. America, Russia, Brazil and...will it end in Civil Wars or in World War III - maybe both.

I LOVE that this had so much story to it. A lot of Dust films are just a few very drawn out scenes. This felt like a whole movie, condensed. Brilliant, that it seems to take place in the 1984 universe, yet it also parallels the road we've turned down.

This is a great short piece. Loved the opening scene using the sounds to paint a larger picture beyond the smoke shrouded scene. The way everything unfolds from there is really good. Effortlessly filling the back story without overusing dialogue. Great supporting cast performances too. My only question was the use of surveillance footage of general public on a bridge at 1:51. They had permissions for using this? I guess the question fits well with the overarching theme of 'Permission.' Thanks for another great video.

Watching this I'm reminded of "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451". But its story of someone who, at one moment is a national hero and the next moment a criminal, is a little uncomfortably close to things happening here in this country as well as Canada, Australia and other democracies that have seemed to turn words like freedoms, civil liberties and rights on their heads.

This was a very nicely done film with a powerful message. The consequences of securing & protecting a city, state or country by means of mass surveillance is a twin-edged sword. People love and want security but don't want to give up their privacy and don't wish to have their information used against them. Tough call for sure.

Hi. I am Permission's scriptwriter. Not based on 1984 but Orwell is a major influence. I would say the main reference could be "The Conformist" by Bertolucci.
