In Nepal atleast, I can confirm that all people of घृतकौशिक गोत्र share the same paternal ancestor named अनुक्रम द्विवेदी (दुबे) as per modern ancestral research as well as lineage texts (वंशावली). This gotra's history is just ¬600 years old in Nepal. They still share a lot of genes together. So, the risk is not negligible. It is still present. Please try not to promote inbreeding.

We cannot avoid paternal as well as maternal lineage because we're connected, sharing a common gene pool. But, at least we can avoid paternal lineage reducing the risk of genetic anomalies to 50% if we avoid marrying within same gotra or surname. But, maternal lineage is difficult to trace for more than 5-7 generations as surnames and gotra vary, thus potential maternal lineage above 7 generations are accepted. At least the risk of genetic defects is avoided by more than 50% if paternal lineage is completely avoided, and the material lineage is avoid for at least 5-7 generations.
