A new solar cell that is bendable and rollable has been developed by scientists at Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (JUST). The new solar cells are of less thickness than a sheet of A4 paper, and the power conversion is above 26%.
This technology will usher in new applications in aerospace and in wearables, and will allow for solar cells to be attached to countless outdoor curved surfaces, including the rooftops of vehicles.

This is been worked on since at least 2005. The problem is always the efficiency of the substrate to convert photonic energy to electrical energy (including using alternatives as gallium arsenide). Much has been studied, but no one has claimed a breakthrough. Perhaps this is it.

"Solar Panels" wont even resemble solar panels anymore..... If the battery research converges..... Theyre talking about batteries / battery storage actually being the structure of the thing! So say a car for example..... tha actual battery would be moulded into the frame / structure of the car!!! or lets say the structural elements / foundations of a building!! This is a game changer! if it ever makes it to market! Things will be lighter smaller possibly stronger!? Also haha at the ending!

balloons on fishing line tethered in place 1000 feet up. Self powered with DJI quality panning cameras and un jammable undetectable directional Infrared diode transmitters to observers on the ground. Sold in lots of 100 for monitoring large areas of interest from multiple angles. Of course the customers want to detect real time any illegal fishing/hunting activity on the ground, including DJI’s laser designators to enable low cost expendable drones to quickly zoom in on the laser spot for close observation or whatever. (Drones also sold in lots of 100).

The Chinese just get on with the occupation of innovation, and don't distract themselves from this task as it gives such pride to the participants. Heat dissipation will be a major issue. With a PCE of 26%, it means 74% of sun energy is turning into heat. The power density of Sun and the surface of the Earth is about 1376 W/m2 which means 1018 W/m2 of heat to be dissipated (thinking of touching an old 100W incandescence light bulb). A typical portable heater used for home uses 1000W. The plastic materials generally have very high thermal resistance. Therefore, this bendable solar cell can only be used at low power applications or its have to be supported by effective heat sinks.

Too bad! Photovoltaic cells and equipment are counted as among the industrial productions that carry an "overcapacity" tag along with Chinese EV's and therefore are banned from the U.S. market and, by extension under U.S. "leadership, the European market as well. China needs to make them cheap for the benefits of the Global South, like those 14nm and above chips using mature technology.

It's a great idea, but, like pretty much all solar panels, they're ugly. And I wonder how durable they are. I like the idea of putting them on the roof of an EV, provided they don't look bad and can last.
