Scientist are faced with a big challenge with hydrogen production, there are 2 ways of producing hydrogen, 1 that uses old fossil fuels which isn’t very green, and another that is great for the planet but is still a bit expensive. Now if they can figure out a way to produce hydrogen thru electrolysis and get the cost down it could prove to be an abundant clean energy source in the future. Well I have good news, there has been another breakthrough in hydrogen production.
So how do we produce Hydrogen? Well the most common way at this time, is thru the process of natural gas reforming. But producing hydrogen in this manner has some serious downsides. It produces harmful by products named carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. I'm not gonna go crazy in-depth on how gas reformation works but this process isn’t green at all let me just leave it there.
There is a green way to produce hydrogen, by using electrolysis, but it uses loads of energy which makes it more expensive. But I have good news.
A new study published in Applied Nano Materials found a way to strip the oxygen from water molecules to leave the hydrogen gas.
and today we will go more in depth on how it works.

Energy is required either way, which comes from elemental Aluminium in this case. Massive amounts of energy is consumed in its production

Yes and while the gallium may be relatively easily extracted, the aluminium is not. It becomes aluminium hydroxide, which is found in aluminium ores and can thus be processed using standard methods. As you said, though: it's very energy intensive.

The real value in this process is the fact that it can be done on the fly. You don't need hydrogen to be piped or bottled. Simply add the ingredients together when you need energy. Obviously this is how Stanley Meyer was powering his car and yes, the method has been well known for a very long time.

They are letting this information out now though. It's been well known for a long time. Probably the process that Stanley Meyer used for his water powered car.

production of aluminium emits co/co2 too from burning charcoal electrodes. thus this method is not truly green.

So electrolysis is still the best way😂

Some people swear to full EVs. I think its because its easier to drive. I personally find it boring. I want my manual gearbox and I want the sound from the engine. The good thing about hydrogren seems to be it can deliver in both of these spaces.

So, you mentioned that the gallium can be reused, but you didn't mention whether the same is true for the aluminum. What is the story there?

Whats the process? Mix gallium and aluminum and then add acid?
@rossbrigoli6780

If the aluminum is consumed, then i guess it's not practical. You need a secondary process to restore the aluminum by removing the oxidation from it. This requires energy. The thing to know is how much energy is required to restore the aluminum and feed it back to the reaction.

Nope. Where do you get galium? What ARE the byproducts now? What do you do with THAT waste. Electrolysis is still the best and cleanest. You can replace the natural gas with steam reforming to biogas. Both are way greener.

Hydrogen will replace Heavy fuel oil & Deasel while battery will replace gasoline. Maritime industry will be the greatest beneficiary of this method of splitting hydrogen breakthrough.

All energies take a lot of infrastructure. We think that gasoline is such a miracle liquid, however if you've ever been in a refinery, it is a miriad of pipes and processes. Electricity is less complicated needs more land to make wind and solar, dams, or using natural gas, coal or nuclear. The hydrogen process will likely be similar. Energy from thin air is not obtained from thin air. Maybe we should learn to use less.

On the whole it's not very green, since aluminium production is _very_ energy intensive. Aluminium waste can indeed be used, but from a broader environmental perspective it's probably better to recycle it. This process actually reminds me of so-called oxygen candles: solid cylinders of sodium chlorate and iron, which are ignited to provide an emergency supply of oxygen on submarines. I'm not sure why one would need an emergency supply of hydrogen, though.

Maybe we should be working on trying to extract the potential energy from the air around us? Dark energy is everywhere right? It is what causes galaxies to accelerate away from us in every direction faster than the speed of light. So, why not tap into it, draw unlimited energy from the fabric of space itself?

So I got some gallium and tested this and it's a bust. There is an energy input and we can see it in the video at 1minute 35 seconds. That's a hot plate which gets the gallium to liquid state. The metals need to be stirred together vigorously too. There's a lot of work involved in producing hydrogen using this method and it's not at all practical. Far better to use an acid with aluminum for better results but you are still producing Browns Gas as opposed to pure hydrogen and it's highly combustibile / explosive.
