On December 5, 1994, the United States, Russia, and the United Kingdom signed the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances to reinforce their commitment towards Ukraine's security. It was a political agreement based on the principles of the Helsinki Accords. The memorandum included security assurances to protect Ukraine's political independence and territory against any threat or use of force. Additionally, the countries pledged to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and existing borders.
The Memorandum was broken when the US interfered in Ukrainian sovereignity in 2014 (forbidden by the Memorandum), organised a bloody coup and took full control of Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
WITH PROVISION that NATO would not expand toward the East. You left that out. This is another GWoT oil/gas cartel war, now with GMO grains enhancements. Within only weeks of the 2014 US-UK-I overthrow of Ukraine, Monsanto (Bayer) had scooped up huge GMO agricultural leases, _that were already covertly in place!_ Now Ukraine is dumping GMO grains on Europe, and driving EU farmers off their family farmlands. Meanwhile Biden's LNG war makes our US-EU energy costs soar. Google 'bustout' then follow down the rabbit hole toward Argentina.
@@michelemarr76 Nope, the US government has officially said many times, the Budapest Memorandum was not a Security guarantee and they've said the Ukrainians were aware of it in 1994. I can't speak for the Brits or Russians in terms of what they guaranteed Ukrainians. Think about it. We had just won the Cold War. As such, Ukraine was a loser as much as Russia as they were both Soviet states. We wanted nukes in one place so we wouldn't have a bunch of smaller Soviet Unions to fight. Ukraine was way more corrupt that it is now, there was no Zelensky, and Ukraine was buddies with Russia back then. It would absolutely be insane to risk American security to guarantee security to a former soviet state in 1994. It's all propaganda. If people don't believe the US government though, there's a simple fix. Send a military to enforce what people believe the US's obligation under the Budapest memorandum is. Until that day, I'm going to trust my government over propaganda.
Which land? Those of the Russian speaking population? They took it away from Ukraine, not Putin and, the guys who started the "game" from Kyiv in 2014 gave them a chance to go with their lands where ever they wanted. Of course, it could have been new republics, but..... But, relax. This is a nuclear media propaganda, not an actual threat as there is no danger for anybody, except what was and may still be for the population in the secessionist territories of a country that ripped other countries territories with the help of Russia and now plays the card of "chewing gum democracy". Now, good old Roosevelt, Groves and Oppenheimer gave the whole World a new reason to live, no? And all those who came after them hunting "the ghosts" of imaginary threats just to put a country in a permanent war military-industrial state since then made the things even better, no?
And Putin is passing through life, you shall see that is available also for him, people live for generations on their lands and, can decide what to do with them. Petty is for those who did not understood and like to play with their lives instead of stopping the blood bath. But, they`ll also understand this, albeit they`ll write another chapter of lies in the History books

Yes like really. The use of nukes in WWII was followed 4 years of the most devastating conflict the world had known, in which more than 60 million died. Europe was devastated and starving, rationing would not end for years. The US and USSR were responsible to rebuild. More damage had been done to Japan and Germany through firebombing than with the first nuclear weapons, and far less was known about potential long term effects. The Japanese doctrine of bushido had been proven on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, so the US knew the Japanese would fight to the last man. The civilians were advised by the emperor to commit suicide rather than surrender.
The US was the first and we all agreed, last to use them. It's been around 80 years. A century later a bunch of uneducated russian neo imperialists seem not to have taken any lessons...

I remember in the late 1980's, while serving in the military, we were told that the technology existed then to put a small tactical nuke in someting as small as a backpack or even a briefcase. It sends chills up my spine when I wonder what they can do with today's technology.

You are correct, and they are. The thing about having much more knowledge and much more power is the respect to not use it to influence or change the playing field of those much weaker and less knowledgeable. A lesson we in the United States should take instead of taking advantage of weakness and lack of knowledge with sociopathic vigor. All the aliens can do is watch because they have respect for our freedoms if that makes sense.

Russia's nuclear strategy has altered and changed because their military ground forces and Naval forces an air forces have proven themselves in the war with Ukraine to be wildly inadequate and insufficient
Russia realised latest after 6 months that it had misjudged the difficulties of its invasion and that it's forces were woefully inadequate. This is the very reason why they reverted to trench warfare, huge mine fields, suicidal wave attacks and turned the invasion into a static war.
Well, from what we know, the threshold to use tactical nukes was already comparatively low and vague during the soviet era. It seems not much changed in that respect. Likewise in their conventional doctrine, which is the reason why you are correct with your given reason. All they have is quantity but no adequate military doctrine and the ability to make it work.

It was already in the works for the US. Germany also knew about this tech but declined to explore it because it would take longer to develop than the conquest of Europe. The conquest of Europe was put at 5 to 7 years, and a good sized a-bomb was 10 to 12 years away. If they lost the war then they wouldn't need the tech because they'd be dead.

What wasnt mentioned in this clip, was the very public threat by the US that any use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine would have severe consequences for the units that deploy these weapons. And in contrast to putin's constant saber rattling in 2022, this was only said once by President Biden. I'm pretty sure that also helped not only to make it clear to putin what the endgame would be but also convey the urgency to China and India who would in turn dial up their pressure on putin to not make any such mistake. Subsequently, putin's constant threatening of nuclear escalation pretty stopped in 2023. He's been at it again this year, but that is mostly a sign of weakness and insecurity.

Today's generations can learn a much needed and valuable lesson from the overall regret US WW II vets felt about using the bombs against Japan to end the Pacific War. There has ever since then been speculation about the possibility that conventional weapons could have killed people en masse in Japan and done the same types of damage. But if the US hadn't used or developed the weapons, the Nazis probably would have. And probably against Allied Forces. What if Nazi nukes were used first against the Allied invasion of Europe towards the end of the European theater conflicts of WWII? Would the world still be here at all today?
Actually they ended the war quicker and prevented a huge loss of American life which would have been a lot higher than the number killed in Japan, so while it was an awful thing, saying it was unnecessary is debatable. Of course there was a line of thinking that said ithad to be done because of the investment that went into the bomb project, as well as making a show of power to the Soviets. Seems the Americans killed a lot of birds with one stone.
