READ ALL: The full video is linked at the bottom of this for the full context.. I also want to highlight that this park was built by skaters and it is not the park itself that is “toxic”. It is just a few people that do not respect scooter riders and take it too far; 90% of skaters are kind to us. I respect the park and how much it has impacted skateboarding and how legendary it is as well. It has done a lot of positivity things The goal of this video is to spread acceptance of scootering and show that we can ALL use a park and get along. A sport should not be blacklisted from any park.
@@don30594i can see how you’d feel bummed about that, but it could really change a kid’s life to welcome him into the space and give him some pointers. i know you want to express yourself and nobody is denying a kid could slow you down, but they’re kids. they’re learning. and they want to be a part of your community- they look up to you!
@@don30594 How about when skaters were treated this way by everyone before the 90s? Youd think if a group is looked down on for so long, they wouldnt go and do the same thing. Looks like I'm wrong though. Your gatekeeping is only hurting everyone and skating as a whole.
To be fair Burnside is historically a skater only park. It was built by skateboards trying to find a place to ride. I’ve also been there and it very clearly says in multiple places that it is skateboarding only. It’s more about respecting the history
I would learn to skateboard but very first time buying my own it keeps skating to the left making it near impossible to turn right. Watched youtube vids nothing wrong with my cushions couldnt figure it out. So i bought a scooter cuz for sure i dont have to deal with as much issues. Cant imagine the annoyance of these ppl after that. Otherwise id "man up" and use the skateboard
True. But a lot of skaters are bums. They still rip too. I mean, skaters built burnside and it’s kind of an institution. Being a local, I skated it a few times in the late 90s and early 00s. Brought my son to see it not too long ago. It’s like deer valley for skiers. Just let the skaters have one place.
@@michaelmangan7963yeah man I agree. They built it just let em have it. I grew up here. Haven’t skated in years but grew up skating there and remember it from the beginning way back when Baloney joes was feeding the homeless above the park. They’ve fought the city tooth and nail to keep that park and it’s rightfully theirs. People can go built a scooter only park and the skaters will respectfully stay out. It’s not just scooters that aren’t allowed, it’s just skateboarding only
Isn't part of the reason skateboarders don't want scooters around bc the people riding them are usually too young or inexperienced to be good enough to not be a hazard to everyone else there?
I thought the skater vs scooter feud was because of little kids being in the way of skaters, I didn’t know there were skaters who disliked even pro scooters.
It actually was, and it proves that the ones hating on on every scooter rider just have no clue why and are hating the same way someone hates apple/Android just because. Its plain redacted
Yea thats it, if the scooter guys are actually riding and not clogging up the park i have no problem with them. Kids using the park as a playground is the problem.
Dead on, it just lost all nuance and became blind hater shit now. These days you should just be happy people are using this shit and keeping it around I think.
Its literally nothing like that. Its more like getting kicked out a place for not following the dress code then getting online and complaining about it.
I’m not saying I’ve been a plug, but most plugs now use social media, so people come from all over town and pull up to the house nowadays. getting a sell from one of your neighbors when you work through social media isn’t that common. A lot of people also plug through their jobs, friends social medias, bars, sketchy gas stations. Idk the more you network the more clients who invite other clients
This a park build by skater for skaters! They build without help of the government or funding. It’s their park (the locals) so they get to decide who gets on, if they start letting these kids with scooters on the park it’s gonna ruin the experience of the skaters who build it. I’m sorry but it makes perfect sense to not let people with scooters get on the park!
It’s cuz skooters are made of metal and stick up way more a collision of skaters is like running into a person a collision of skooters is like running at a metal pole it’s literally way more dangerous
Skaters build that skatepark by themselves. No city help no nothing. So stfu and know this is our home that we built to kick it here without anyone telling shit. Now all of a sudden yall tryna come to our spot. Gtfo
I think it’s so dumb when I hear other skaters tell scooter kids they can’t ride at the park like dawg you don’t own shit go street skate or sum hop off they tip. And this is coming from a skater too
@@nightmare7124fr bro, i was turning into an annoying ass skater kid but i badly injured myself and am too scared to try again, seeing shit like this makes me glad i quit
I like the way your DC hoodie matches your scooter and your helmet. You really showed those skaters that your not to played with by the way you were able to maintain your balance going up that transition.
Nah, I think scooters are more accepted publicly. As a former skater, I’ve been kicked out of almost every skateable spot there is in my city. Burnside is actually a legendary skatepark that has been around since the late 80s early 90s and they probably feel territorial over it. I know a lot of my friends were like that about our skateparks. Especially because most scooter kids snake your turn and don’t understand the flow of the skatepark. If it were these scooter kids I’d of been cool with them because they actually know how a skatepark is supposed to work.
@@Branchofsinas a former skater myself. Skater have always been Karen's always bitchimg about everything especially getting kicked out of skating illegal spots.
It's so funny watching people leave this comment you know nothing about Burnside. Why they don't let scooters pretty much absolutely nothing about the park I doubt you really even know anything about skateboarding but you feel the need to comment garbage shows how ignorant you are. Keep talking a out things your don't know sheep
That's how it always goes. There are those elite punks that don't like anyone that hasn't been around the scene for however long. Same with certain metal heads even hip hop heads. There will always end up being those elitist a holes in the outcast groups.
@@brettthewilder2338i recognize that it was built buy skaters, and i think that is amazing and i respect that. But scooter riders did nothing to get banned from a skatepark. We should all get along, it makes no sense. We all go to the skatepark for the same reason. But if people wont respect the sport, so be it, we can agree to disagree
We used to bring scooters to that Park probably 15 years ago. We were the only kids that anyone knew that rode scoots. We were 100% welcome, and brought boards as well. More recently, During the first scooter pilot in portland, we would take rental scooters and put them in the Burnside at 1:00 a.m..
These aren't kids, these are men who spent their own years and decades of their lives illegally building that park so that they had somewhere to skate. They paid for it, they bled for it and they fought hard to keep it. This ain't Venice Beach, this is one of the biggest DIY projects to ever exist, and the most successful
@@Phoenix_2AI ain't afraid of some 115 lbs soaking wet skater kid even if he's trying to hit me with his board. Couldnt swing it hard enough to cause any real damage unless its a blindside shot.

Thank you! I also want to say that its just a few skaters who are jerks. 97% of skaters are super nice. The whole goal of this video is to try and show that we can all use a skatepark and get along
First thing my buddy who owned an indoor skatepark always told us to go up and greet every person when you show up to a new skatepark. Surprised who you will meet and how it can totally kill any egos
Can’t get jumped if they’re chillin with you. Kinda the same concept as going to prison and rushing the biggest mf there. It’s to earn respect among the community
First world problems - when your wooden and wheeled plank is different than his metal plank with a handlebar, and that's somehow worth a territorial beef.

it’s fucking burnside dude. it’s in the middle of portland and there are a million other parks and spots that scooters can ride. it is built, funded and maintained by skaters with 0 help from the city. go watch “Under the Bridge: 25 Years of Fighting for Burnside Skatepark” and you’ll just get it.
Obviously. This dork is riding a scooter in a skate park. With a helmet on. Skate parks are for societal reject drug users with brain damage. Not scooter kids.
Not a snowflake or anything but aren’t scooters illegal to ride in some skate parks (since scooters can cause injures to skaters by children not looking around their surroundings or get the kid himself hurt, then the skater would be blamed for it)
@@S1ayer585.the amount of places that are illegal is so small and the one in the video isn't, some skateboards just don't like it, and I find it idiot

Society is a circle. It gets better but its still round lol. You fight against something… then you become what you fought. Thats one of many lessons of history,
@@in6xz437 it's an exaggeration, but it's true. The vast majority of scooters being unsafe, causing others injuries while just stepping off themselves. Kids chewing up brand new concrete parks in weeks by dragging their deck along every edge the park has. Some scooter riders are nice, but they are few and far between.
From my personal experience as a skater when scooters started taking off in the late 90s, I never had a problem with the scooters it was the kids that rode them. They didn’t follow park etiquette and would constantly steal lines, blocks whole areas and just stop mid ride which usually ended up in someone slamming into them and being blamed that the kid just stopped in the middle of the park. Also their parents typically sucked 🤣
We hade that problem here in my hometown in Sweden. Today the most skaters educate all the others in how to behave in the park. We started an dialoge with the parents that was there with the kids and now we have 0 problem. The biggest problem right now is realy good skaters hogging the place not giving others any time to do a line since they never end there own :)
@@freddieholmez2350 For sure, now in my advanced age I can talk to these kids and their parents and help explain how things are supposed to be and help them get used to the park. When I was a punk ass kid not so much
I’ve been a skater all my life but nothing makes me laugh more when they say “no scooters allowed, it says it on the sign!” Like bruh how many hundreds times have you been told that out street skating and that’s the card you gonna pull 🤣
Fun story, my city made a temporary skatepark on the waterfront and I would occasionally skate it with some scooter kids. For whatever reason the security was absolutely dead set on not allowing scooters at the park, and kicked them out every time I was there. It was a fun change of pace considering it's usually me getting booted from public spaces.
To be fair this skatepark has a history with the city and was DIY built by skaters for skaters illegally and there’s literally signs stating that ONLY skateboards are allowed. It’s maintained and kept clean entirely by the skaters who frequent the park. There’s a lot of history that goes along with it. You’re not from Portland and have never been to Burnside obviously.
Skateboarders have one place in the city built for them, then a bunch of kids show up on scooters and bikes, able to knock them down easily. I’d be pissed too
Dawg no offense but then burnside locals huck shit normally. They are made cuz it’s basically their little home life. Not saying it’s cool to do this to scooter riders but p town has many parks all around, he purposely went here knowing the results.
I've been skateboarding almost 30 years and personally I'd have no problem with you riding if you follow unspoken park rules, like no snaking and stuff like that and pay attention. but I'd feel like that even with other skateboarders. And honestly I'd proberbly enjoy watching you guys if your good because I think scooter tricks look sick ❤. I consider it a great sport, and is much more great than aggressive in lining. but I'd be cool with an in liner if they followed same unspoken rules. I'm just glad to see people out enjoying them selves and getting out the house and doing something healthy and getting some exercise 😊❤

Sure! But scooter kids didn't spend 20+ years fighting to keep this park alive therefore they're not welcome. It wasn't a publicly funded park it was skater funded and built. Every other public park is more than welcoming of scooters and thats where they should ride
