I think that shift under recoil is the worst possible tactical scope defect. It's also interesting that even if this is "scope settling" it means the factory did not use this sort of test to QC their product. I'd love to see more of these tests.

This is awesome, please keep them coming. Subbed.I don't quite understand the "fire test" What is happening? For example, point of aim changes when you shoot the gun and I understand that, but is that software saying the reticle itself has moved by 2.3 moa?! I'm a little perplexed. Which cartridge is it simulating and how?I'm debating between the Leupold VX-6 1-6, Vortex Razor HD 1-6, or the GRSC 1-6. (I'd love to see some 3-gun optics =D)Which one would you pick or is there something else I'm not considering? Thanks

I would recommend increasing your box test to 20 moa or something much greater than 4 clicks.
@jhareng
@jhareng 9 лет назад
Why haven't you reported the ret shift shown at 9min 42? A lot of scopes do this from cheap to the most expensive scopes made. Need a test from minimum range going through to infinity just by adjusting focus. Then same again on low power ie minimum.

You need to change camera position if you want to have reasonable results for light transmission on lowest power. Eye relief can (and will) change on scopes with such a high zoom ratio. It's not scope's fault.
@DougsterCanada1
@DougsterCanada1 7 лет назад
While I didn't notice any change in the room lighting, I wonder if applying a "tube" as a shield from the camera to the optic would change (even) the light transmission rating? If the lens were the only light source, for the camera to read. Does that make sense?

On my 338 Norma Mag, this scope (except mil / mil) gave me repeatable 0.3 - 0.5" groups at 100y, and same scale out to to 600 yards. Meh.... I don't really care what happens in a laboratory. It works in the field.
@maxordinate

Mark Kozak 😂😂 Seen it rail in the field as well. Two weeks after this to be exact while training with Border Patrol. They had just purchased these. Maybe you got a good one. Or maybe they fixed the problem and you bought yours after the fix. Either way it’s failed, numerous times in the lab and in the field.

Leupold recommendation on rings is 69 IN/LBS
@TexanUSMC8089
@TexanUSMC8089 8 лет назад
+jtmattel05 Vortex is 18 max, 69 seems kind of high. Either way, I think they just got a bad scope. I doubt this happens often, and I'm sure leupold will replace it.

+Max Ordinate Academy That sucks. I have a vortex viper and several Nikons monarchs. I have 1 monarch 6-24x50 that didn't hold up well to my 7mm mag. It was embarrassing until I figured out it was the scope. I'll probably start buying vortex from now on. I'm impressed with this one. Great videos.

The actual torque specs are 15-20in/lbs for ring caps, depending on the manufacturer. The ring nuts that secure it to the mount is 65 in/lbs. if you torque ring caps to 69, you’ll probably crush the tube. Like a local agency did here. But they weren’t satisfied crushing it the first time. They moved the scope in the rings just the width of the rings. And then crushed the tube again, both front and back. So there was a two inch section of tube on each end crushed. The sniper assigned to it couldn’t hold a group and qualify with it. They thought he was just a poor shot. They asked me to look at it. I was in disbelief when I found the problem. The good news is that Leupold rebuilt the scope for something like $130 dollars. I thought they were going to tell me to pound sand and buy a new scope, but they fixed it. Hats off to Leupold for great service!
@SkinnySkinch
@SkinnySkinch 3 года назад
No they don't lol. 69in lbs is for the BASE of the scope mount rings, NOT THE RINGS. 69 in lbs on the rings will CRUSH your tubes and if you're lucky it won't crush the tubes but it will make your internals bind when going through the magnification range with the throw lever.

Supposedly the tracking issues with the Mark 6 was fixed in the newer updated Mark 5 line. Mark 5 is supposedly a better updated version of the Mark 6. Nightforce is over priced. Get a Vortex Razor HD if you wanna spend over 2k on a scope.

@chadmeyer9500

Want to find out who doesn't get enough allowance money to buy the same gear the "gear snobs" work for to pay for? Just make a video they think is critical of something high-quality and made in the U.S. Then laugh your ass off when the idiots aren't even smart enough to FINISH the video to see how it turns out. And what's really fucking funny is every one of them probably has an AR or AK they've got $1500 to $2000 grand in and at least a third of that is in useless, battery-powered "gear" their "internet heroes" said was cool so they ran out and bought it. And since 99% of them can't hit a 50-gallon drum with any rifle shooting offhand with open sights at 100 yards, watching them gloat about what they THINK happened in a video they THINK pisses off the "gear snobs" they for some reason give a shit about enough to worry about what THEY think of the video, its easy to figure out why they could spend $50 or $500 or $5000 on scope and STILL not be able to hit shit without a benchrest and bags.

Uh, how do you know that moving fixture is returning to its original position? Your torque wrench technique also needs a little work. Try holding onto the handle. when you torque instead of using one finger at the end of the wrench. That's what handles are for. I trust that you also return your torque wrench to zero when its not in use as well. That's a must-do on torsion spring torque wrenches like that. Kinda weird that BOTH of your "fire tests" resulted in identical "shifts" of 2.3 MOA, is it not?

I've got a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5x14-50 I purchased "used" in the Sidney, NE Cabela's Bargain Cave almost 20 years ago. It lived the first 14 or 15 years of its life on my Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .30-06, which is a hard-kicking rifle. Probably most of 1000 rounds through that rifle hunting deer, shooting prairie dogs with cheap 180-grain soft-point bullets, shooting deer with Winchester Fail-Safe ammo and it got banged around and knocked over at deer camp and even thrown up a muddy, snowy creek bank one morning when it was either throw the rifle up the bank or take it with me as I went over backwards into the creek. I zeroed it ONCE in those 14 or 15 years. Deer hunting in November in Nebraska in rain and snow to shooting prairie dogs at 95 degrees in the summer it was dead-nuts on. Every time. Then I pulled it off the A-Bolt and put on my AR "Ranch Rifle" I put about 3000 rounds at least through shooting prairie dogs and general "plinking". That's a "homebuilt" AR I threw together for about $1200 with a Wilson Combat 18" match barrel, Timney 3-lb. comp trigger, etc. That rifle will shoot 10-round sub-MOA groups and it did so repeatedly with that scope. I also generally was down in the dirt with that rifle and scope using prairie dog mounds for "benchrests" and usually leaving the gun laying on the ground when I did "body counts". It also was my 24-7-365 truck gun for several years. Then I put that scope on my Armalite AR-50A1. I "boresighted" the scope the same way I alwasy do by looking down the bore with the rifle bagged/blocked up firmly and aiming it toward a bullseye target and adjusting the scope to coincide. Within the first 10 rounds out of that .50 I was shooting sub-MOA groups at 500 yards with the "junk" surplus 650-grain pulldown FMJ bullets "experts" claim are worthless in a .50 for "accuracy". Now that scope is on my DPMS LR308. I could tell you the story about that rifle and the Leupold Mark AR I had on it from new that I actually "broke" when I got pissed off enough about ongoing, since-new short-stroking/double-feeding issues with the rifle that I slammed it down on the hood of my pickup and popped the crosshairs in the reticle. I boxed up the rifle and sent it to DPMS (after doing everything recommended and plenty of my own ideas trying to fix it) and boxed up the scope and sent it to Leupold with an honest note essentially saying "I fucked up and abused this scope and broke the crosshair at least so please repair it, contact me with a total for the repairs and I'll pay you and then you can return it to me". Less than 2 weeks later I had my scope back good as new for no charge. If you don't know how good Leupold products are, you're just a fucking moron wannabe Range Rambo tactitool noob who's too stupid or broke to pay for quality once and have it done with forever. And by the way, expert, if you'd watch the whole video you'd see that the "old timer" in the video mentions that he's seen many scopes do exactly what the Leupold did and any shooter who has ever installed, zeroed and sighted in more than one or two scopes in his life has also seen, which is "movement" during the first two or three shots as the internal mechanisms of the scope "settle in". Because it PASSED the second "fire test" and RETURNED TO ZERO with a 2.3 MOA "shift" back to where it started. The only "test" that Leupold scope FAILED was that it had a LITTLE TOO MUCH MAGNIFICATION. Try watching and listening before talking and you might not look like such an idiot.
@kcstott
@kcstott 5 лет назад
I also think that their testing procedures and verification of set up is crude. I feel they could get better data if they knew what they were doing with fixturing to high precision. The joke of grabbing the scope to see if they can feel a 2moa shift. Lets say th escope is mounted with rings 4" apart. well 1 moa of shift is equal to .0011" inches over 4" I'm a tool maker and trying to feel .001" of slop is near impossible on something with a short lever as a scope.

ALSO I have used a Shit-Ton of test equipment and when you have such sad lab conditions (I see a band saw a few feet away) dirt and varying other conditions - this test is total BS and i don't own any of these scopes. So I also did not see any optic cleaning and also exact measurements of distance for the measuring devices. So this is a pretty LAX LAB and as it shows POOR TEST results.
