Yes, there are many things shooters do. Some account for backlash, some account for lag, and some account for the spin of the Earth. I have never had the need to account for any of those (especially not with a quality scope). I am more interested in "functional" accuracy that can be performed on the spot in less than ideal conditions. I am not worried about taking an extra minute for 1/8 moa better accuracy. I'd rather shoot faster and be within 1 moa.

The fact that all of the rounds hit the target slightly to the right could be just a slight variable in the wind conditions for that specific time. I say, it's pretty on point. This looks like a great exercise! I will definitely try it the next time I go to the range!

A much better way to check the tracking for scopes with much fewer rounds. I been using the 3 rds per group, move windage/elevation, shoot 3 more rds and so on until the 'box' is shot. This is much better....twice the adjustments moving around, fewer shots downrange. Especially with price of ammunition and reloading components out there nowadays.Thank you.

Great idea! I was thinking about how to evaluate this the other day. So, if you connect the corners to create a box and the box is essentially square and tilted at an angle, this could point to a scope mounting issue, specifically if the scope wasn't mounted level?

You should also shown how to test the tracking of the reticle. The reticle can be improperly placed sometimes even canted and therefore its measurements off.

In the machine shop, we worry about backlash. So, to avoid backlash one always approaches one's setting from the same "side". So, while I might always just dial in any clockwise turn of the turrets, I would always go past any counter clockwise settings, and the approach the desired setting with a few clicks clockwise. Have you ever considered "backlash" on a scopes turrets?

@griffyrule6553
@griffyrule6553 9 лет назад
You can simplify this, instead of doing a square, do a cross. Make an adjustment up 3 MOA, shoot. Then down 3 MOA, shoot. Left... then right. You should have an impact 3 inches directly above, below, to the left and to the right of the zero and your center.
@brianfield9252

Good call. i like the box though because it allows you to make an adjustment on your wind and elevation instead of the cross which is one or the other. I think i will try the cross technique as well.

judging by the short action I would say it is another .308 The savage fcp .338 comes with the hs preisicion stock as well. the hunter in the .338 has the same stock or comparable to this one but the hunter does not have the fluted barrel.
@browneye77
@browneye77 11 лет назад
Thats definitely a short action receiver. The bolt has a Mauser style claw extractor and the bolt shroud has the three position safety. Ruger, FN, Winchester, and Kimber use that kind of safety but judging by the angle of the bolt handle I'd guess it's an FN/Winchester action..extremely accurate in the right hands.

This does not address adjustment lag, where you may need to fire two or three rounds after adjusting in order to allow the springs on the scope's internal erector tube to settle in. Some shooters rap their scope sharply instead of shooting, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that.

Isn't it better to do this with more then 3 moa? Ive herd of scopes having different adjustments per click depending on how many revolutions the turret has done. So instead of just doing 3 moa do 40, etc. From what i understand the purpose of this to test what the actual value of each click is and this can be a minute amount (.25 vs .29 per click) might not seam like much but it cant be tested until you test the full range of the scope *This is mostly for long range accurate shooting tho.

When you adjust the windage and elevation and parallax etc do you then just aim the adjustments you made on the target?
@Bobsonomatic
@Bobsonomatic 8 лет назад
+SuperImmunologist You aim at the bullseye on every shot. The purpose of the drill is to check the quality/consistency of the optic. Shot #1 goes on the bull, and then you adjust 3/3 up/right. Aim at the bull again, and your shot should be 3" high and 3" right.

Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great ru-vid.comUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

@supertruckertom
@supertruckertom 9 лет назад
You can test out a scope by mounting it on an accurate 22 bolt action and shoot the box test at reduced range and double or triple the number of clicks you make. Centerfire ammo is expensive. With quality 22 ammo you can work around the box three or four times. If it passes the test on a 22 then mount it up on the big gun and repeat.
@kendyluu
@kendyluu 7 лет назад
SuperTruckerTom this is wrong. A cheap$20-50 Bushnell or Tasco scope at Walmart might work fine on 22, doesn't mean it will work on centerfire rifle
@zakmang3074
@zakmang3074 6 лет назад
So do it with a 22 to make it cheap then repeat with a centerfire? Doesn’t that make it more expensive then just doing a normal way with centerfire

What does a target look like when the sight is not tracking properly? I mean no one is gunna put rounds right through the last one so how can you chalk it up to shooter error or the sight not tracking correctly?
@furai333
@furai333 10 лет назад
You need to shoot at 100 yards. Then know your adjustment of the scope. For example mine is adjusted in MOA. At 100 yards 1MOA is equal to 1 inch. I know that for each click I turn my turrets, it moves 1/4 (quarter) inch at 100 yards. So according to the example if I move 3MOA(12 clicks) up and 3MOA(12 clicks) right the point of impact from center should be approximately 3 inches above and to the right. If you follow this and do it for all your points of impact should all be 3 inches up or down and left and right from center shot. If it does not look like that you know that you have a scope that does not track correctly. For example you move it 3MOA up and 3MOA right but your shot is only 2 inches up and 1.5inches down you know something is up. If you find it is not correct, you may have to go back and re zero the scope and try again, if it still is playing up make sure your adjustments are correct, ie 1/4 MOA not 1/8MOA. If all is correct then you will need to take it to the shop you bought it from and get it sorted. Hope that helps.
@steveduvall5981
@steveduvall5981 9 лет назад
furai333 Thats right 333, and if youre lucky , your scope will re-zero when returned to its zero mark. If not, then you know you get what you pay for in scopes. Good luck.

@Zovatha
@Zovatha 8 лет назад
+Ian Davis generally speaking adjustments refer to where the bullet will impact, not the movement of the reticle. Its almost "too intuitive" so try not to over think it. if you aim dead center and your rounds hit low, you want to adjust your turrets in the "up" direction however MOA are appropriate. Iron sights are the same way. I'm not saying there aren't some backwards scopes/sights out there, but I have yet to encounter them.
@10EPrecision
@10EPrecision 7 лет назад
Ian Davis trust the directions on top of the turret not the reticle movement on the target as you dial... For example if you shoot and hit low of your intended point of aim/target and follow the scope turret direction for "up" the scope reticle will actually track down on the target (visible if your are looking through the scope and dialing at the same time)... If you think about it the reticle is now below your intended point of aim/target and to correct that you have to bring the reticle and the muzzle of the rifle "up" to be on target again which in turn will correct your point of impact up.

Ryan, that is not the best way to run that square BECAUSE setting your tracking back to zero every time tends to mitigate any errors in tracking. To calibrate AND measure your errors you should run the drill as described in this target: www.oldspooks.com/agstuff/Targets/calibration/turret-calibration.pdf You will then know exactly what your actual click value is in both X and Y. You will also then know the exact magnification to use for range finding if you are shooting an SFP scope.
