What rifle scope features are required for Ultra Long Range precision shooting? Rex introduces IOR Valdada’s solution to the ULR optics challenge. The new I.O.R. Valdada CRUSADER 5.8-40x56 and the TERMINATOR 12-52x56 scopes offer feature combinations never before offered to the public.
For the purposes of this video, ultra long range is defined as those distances exceeding the maximum supersonic range of the projectile, typically beyond 1 mile. For distances such as these, superior tier 1 glass quality is needed to benefit from the full magnification range of high powered scopes. Additional features such as oversized main tubes combined with in line rifle chassis systems can dramatically increase the shooter’s abilities to spot his own shots under recoil. Stay tuned for more on this topic from other professional shooters.
Thank you for your donations to the Rex Reviews Project! We hope these videos continue to be a great help to you all.

Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great ru-vid.comUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

Rex, I want to thank you so much. When I was in the Army during Vietnam. I would have been lucky to hit a 12"x12" target at 100 yards - thanks to the information I learned in your Sniper 101 series my C.E.P. now - at age 68 - is around 1/4" at 100 yards; half of my shots land within a 1/4" radius of dead center. Because I was such a bad shot I hadn't fired a rifle - before this year - since I left Vietnam in March of 1972. Having done some TV camera work in the 1980s, I really appreciate the production quality of your videos. Great work.

TECHNICAL CLARIFICATION: Exit Pupil Diameter in not dependent on tube size but is a simple function of objective lens size and magnification. When we talk about 40mm tubes having a large perceived image size we are not referring to exit pupil diameter.
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 8 лет назад
+TiborasaurusRex Also, tube diameter in-of-itself has nothing to do with image clarity or field of view.

A discussion on misunderstandings concerning tractability and balanced flight has been brought up. A very qualified contact of mine has pointed out although these effects are observed in field artillery applications, that small arms fire applications don't produce the same level of concern with these factors. The primary issues in question seem to be as follows: 1) over-exaggeration concerning increased drag effects on a projectile due to a minor loss of tractability. 2) over-exaggeration of any general loss in tractability in small arms projectiles with low initial elevation angles. In short, I concede that although these effects exist and are significant in field artillery applications, they exist on the microscale when it comes to small arms fire. I certainly agree that any potential loss in tractability on the microscale will not result in any "practically significant" drag increase. The issue of contention among the gurus may be whether or not potential minor losses in tractability can exacerbate bullet yaw in the transonic enough to result in significant increases in cone of fire hundreds of meters beyond the transonic. This is where I'm getting different stories from different folks... as I haven't yet purchased my 3000m test range and Doppler RADAR, I must ask you all, what say you???????

+TiborasaurusRex I hope you realize that there are very few people in the world qualified to comment on that subject - which is why you haven't gotten very many answers. I would like to point out that .22s fired longer range than 75-100 yards have already gone through the transonic region of their flight and are subsonic projectiles. Perhaps the easiest way to do some experiments on long range .30 cal bullets would be with 300 Blackout loaded just supersonic - so they would make the transition over a more reasonable distance. It appears your experience with the marginal twist rate on your .243 with 105 grain A-max bullets seems to indicate that they handle the transition well.

+TiborasaurusRex I've run into an issue of bullet tip deformation from bullets bouncing around in loose packaging boxes prior to assembly, could that explain random flyers at 400+ meters? It seems that smaller calibers with lighter bullets exhibit malformed tip destabilization drift but with out specific testing I'm not able to make a conclusive answer. If you've encountered such issues I would appreciate if you could confirm that it might be the reason for the use of meplat trimming and bullet tipping dies. Thank you.

Rex - Just picked up a .338 Lapua Barrett MRAD and have been searching for the most ideal scope for ultra long range shooting. I'm no spring chicken and my eyes aren't want they used to be so the highest usable magnification is what caught my eye involving the IOR Valdada "Terminator." I was also interested in Barrett's new BORS (Barrett Optical Ranging System) device, but unfortunately they don't have it available for any of the Valdada line of scopes. I was advised from a reliable source that Valdada experienced an issue with the lenses separating on the IOR line, which occurred repeatedly a few months apart for some customers. The scopes had to be shipped back to Romania for warranty work and as the result it took an excessive amount of time. Before spending a considerable amount for one of these, I'd like to find out if you have heard of such a problem in the past with the IOR line and if so, is the crusader and terminator exempt in some way of experiencing the same issues?

I wish the IOR Valdada range came with a fully illuminated reticle, rather than just the centre dot. We have a lot of dull weather and little sunlight in the north of England so for this reason I prefer fully illuminated reticles.

the bullet actually turns back on the end because of the drag has more force to turn the bullet back that on the front part. Torque So the bullet is vibrating and trying to turn back but the air drag also creates torque and that keeps correcting the orientation of the bullet... Quite a complex thing a simple bullet flying... 🙂

I own two IOR Valadada scopes. They both broke and had to be sent in for repairs. One of them was sent in for repairs and it was replaced, a couple of years later the replacement broke and had to been sent in for repairs. I have a told of $4,500 (ish) tied up in these broken scopes. NIghtforce, Vortex and or SWFA would be way better options, if you want a scope that won't break in a couple of years.

I have a crusader scope. I shot on the same range once before. Great folks to host you. Now as for the scope, there are minor issues that I wished they were addressed from the start. There is no index mark on the scope body, why? Do I have to guess if I dialed 1.75 or 1.5 MOA? Also, zeroing is an old school, un-screw 4-small screws rotate while not disturbing the zero, line-up and then tighten the screws. . How about a quick-rezo? How about adding the nice fiber-optic insert ala Vortex. Finally, IOR has re-align the pricing structures as the new scopes on the market are now offering a better value.

That's a little impractical for my tasking, which is DMR up to ranges of about 1,000 yards. But I wouldn't mind having a Valdada Recon if I could get one with a MilDot reticle vice a Mil scale reticle. The first focal plane and Miliradian reticle and turret 10th of a mil adjustments are optimal for USMC precision target engagement, but a scaled reticle is distracting under stress, and we prefer simple unmarked MilDots.

Hi Rex, I've enjoyed your videos over the years. I'm considering a new high power scope. s&b has their new 5-45 out, and we now have other nice offerings. The scope market is getting competitive. I have no experience with a 40 mm tube and you really like it. I have the s&b5-25 and it's ok (tunneling on low end, but would love more power, clarity and a more forgiving eyebox). So I'm looking at the s&b 5-45 or now even the IOR 5.8-40, I guess. If price were not an object, what you pick and why? Thank you sir.

It is absolutely INCORRECT that a bullet leaves the barrel in an upward trajectory or arch. Bullets began to drop immediately after leaving the barrel of a gun to to gravity and increasing loss of active energy. There is no arch other than the gradual drop or MOA/Mil decay,. It is true the bullet tends to wobble below supersonic and become less stable.
@MrMemusashi
@MrMemusashi 7 лет назад
Rex was just pointing out that the rifle is at an upwards inclination. so yes it starts dropping right away but since it is pointing up it forms an arc. How can you not get that? I thought it was clear what he was saying.

I'd suggest to check out the March scopes and the most recent S&B scopes If one March going from 5-50 and the new S&B is at 5-45. That's just extreme.
@schm147
@schm147 8 лет назад
+FDominicus March's visual quality doesn't come close to IOR Valdada. There is more to a scope than just magnification, and anything over 40x is impractical for anything other than benchrest shooting.
@FDominicus
@FDominicus 8 лет назад
+Walrus Well if you can compare, and found that I'll be fine with what, But the magnification here is also around 40. I just can tell that they thing I just find is that it's getting quite darker with larger magnification. Still here your minimal maginfication is 5,8 and that's too much for my opintion. So in that are the March and S&B are the better choice.
@schm147
@schm147 8 лет назад
FDominicus If you're shooting targets, which you probably are if you're using a 40x scope, a lower magnification of 6x is not much of an issue. But as Rex said in the video, the Valdada has a 40mm tube which helps a lot with visual clarity.
@FDominicus
@FDominicus 8 лет назад
+Walrus Yes but then I can also use the 50 from the March or the 45 from s & b or even larger. So I don't see the argument why the IOR should be "that" special"
@schm147
@schm147 8 лет назад
FDominicus Visual. Fucking. Clarity. I don't think you realize how important that is on scopes. That extra magnification is useless if you're just zooming in on a blurry image. Professionals regularly shoot extreme ranges with less than 20x because visual clarity beats magnification every time. I feel like you either didn't watch the whole video or slept through half of it.

Rex, first and foremost, thank you for your videos. I am in the market for a scope again and am stuck between the crusader and the new NF ATACR 7-35. I have many NF scopes so I am familiar with them and love them. This Crusader is quite intriguing, but unfortunately Valdada does not have what some might call good street credibility. Have you had any experience with the 7-35 NF, and if so, what would be your honest comparison between the two. Thank you in advance for your time.

Rex, I purchased a Steiner 3-12x50 after you and I spoke to one another. I am now in a spot where I can buy the best of the best. So the question is, S&B 5x25 PM II or Crusader or possibly the Recon?

+Daniel Green Your choice would be determined by your specific selection criteria and your own personal preference, these scopes are all great.

What is a good scope for a scar 17s. I will use this rifle for some hunting. What would be good magnification say up to 600 yards and plus.

Any thoughts on the Marchs 8-80x56?
@daveb1870
@daveb1870 5 лет назад
Although the march has 80 power it only has 60 moa of total travel. As with any scope the closer you get to the edge of the travel the less in windage you have. Imagine a rectangle with the long sides vertical as you traverse that vertical motion the short sides of the rectangle get even smaller. While elevation can be overcome with moa bases or an adjustable base, windage either has to be accomplished by clicking or hold over on a scope with a smaller vertical travel. The march scope only has 40 moa and that is centered. That adjustment gets smaller the more the vertical is traversed.
