Last canoe trip of the season on Lake Superior. After a season of narrating, I hand over the mic to nature. I've said more than enough.

Your silence speaks volumes. Definitely supplied me with many questions. Am I camping to fulfill my soul, or just getting away? Am I accomplishing a re-generation, or failing to connect with the "wild" I crave? My questions remain unanswered... I believe I need to re-assess why I need the wilderness. Your videos provide inspiration. Thank you.

Thanks so much Reed, an excellent question. Some say this kind of behaviour is escapism and that we're just running away from our problems and seeking temporary relief. But I disagree. We're forming a critical life-long relationship with nature (which our society sorely lacks), and getting the spiritual fulfillment similar to the type that one might get from a church or meditation.

When you said about your solitude and sharing feelings I was thinking you're devoting this great piece of art to Erin, yet you just thanked us for watching you :) But it is me who should thank you I guess. I wish much more people would watch your channel, but it looks like they are not quite ready yet. Majority in our world are leaning toward simple and rough rather than fine and complicated. They want "bread and circuses". Great thank you Jon for your honesty, courage, love to nature, your fine thoughts and for sharing all of it.

Another great video, always good film and editing. I do prefer when you talk though., like to hear what your thinking. Understand what your encountering because the camera doesn’t get everything. Lately RU-vid has been recommending Northern Scavenger to me. A couple guys who seem to go to a lot of the same places as you. However their videos are only half as good as yours. Not terrible to watch but jerky and basic commentary.
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 4 года назад
Thanks a lot Joe. I agree, most videos need a story and reflection. Just a little experiment and a break from narrating for me. I enjoy making the videos but worrying about telling the story does take away from being in the moment a bit. Hahah I'm a huge fan of theirs...maybe you haven't caught the right videos yet. They did an insane month-long trip through Labrador this summer which I think will be published later this winter. If nothing else, watch that when it's up!

Hi Jon. As a long drawn out commercial Trolling Salmon fisherman out here on the BC coast I learned and actually helped write a booklet on the proper handling of fish. One of the main points we discussed was to Never lift a fish by the tail. Their skeletal system aren't built to withstand the forces of being pulled by the tail and what happens is their vertebra and their blood system seriously tears leaving the fish with a great deal of damage. You can actually see it if you lift one by the tail then kill and fillet it. You will notice all of the ruptured blood vessels along the spine area leaving blood bruising all thru the flesh. Anyhow; not good for fish to lift them by the tail especially if you want to let them go in a healthy manner. Just thought it might help as many people don't know this.

Good heads up. Thank you for spreading this little-known knowledge. Education and information is the first step!
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 4 года назад
Thanks Scot, definitely good food for thought. However I wonder if that would only apply to huge fish like salmon. Their own weight would cause such a force to be exerted which I don't believe would be the case for a smaller fish (let's say 5lbs and under), especially if you immediately get your hand under the belly once it's lifted out of the water. I still think it's a safer alternative than a gill hold unless there's a nice big gill plate to grab on to.
@scotyfilms
@scotyfilms 4 года назад
Yes, I'm not positive on that, but I think there are extra forces applied when the fish struggles in this event.

I discovered your program rather randomly but it suits what's now the vicarious canoeist in me as I spent some time rambling by canoe in Ontario when I was young - sometimes solo in the northwest of the province. The longest stint was two months alone and your vignette brought back a measure of the silence and bemused attention from those trips. Living now on an island on the west coast, I long ago traded my canoe for a kayak but still pine for the granite-shouldered lakes of the Canadian shield (ah, what's bred in the bone ...). Thanks for providing a memorable return to them.
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 4 года назад
Much appreciated Jeremy! Two months solo is another level. I find at the 10-day mark it begins to wear on me.
@jeremyhowe7737
@jeremyhowe7737 4 года назад
Yes, two months alone in the wilderness is rather uncommon but it can afford some telling insights - if it doesn't break you in the wrong way. But break you it will, it seems, and if in the right direction, then no matter the weather, the discomfort, or misfortune, you somehow awaken an unperturbed serenity. It took me more than five weeks to come to that but what an extraordinary revelation then to abandon the festering, enculturated, need to blame. Freed from THAT, how could the fishing or anything else ever be less than perfect ...?

Thank you too Jon. I'm someone who tends to enjoy solitude more than most, but over the last year or so I've suffered terrible endless loneliness. So much so, it was almost the end of the road for me. Videos like yours have kept me company, and given me hope that one day maybe I'll make it up around your area, so at least if I'm alone, it'll be in a beautiful place, or at least I can imagine being there. Thanks for keeping me company.

Jim, it's been a pleasure to have you join. What you said is really touching and very noteworthy. Solitude could be used as a synonym for loneliness but they are so different, aren't they? Solitude is rejuvenating but loneliness is deeply painful. There can be a fine line between the two but once that line is crossed, they become completely different. For those of us who can enjoy solo tripping, it's the profound sense of belonging we find in wilderness that can fend off the feeling of loneliness. Hope you can always find solace there brother.
@jimf1964

Backcountry Angling Ontario Yes, of course! I've done many shorter trips alone, and a few week long ones. Being alone, on purpose, in the wild can be a wonderful experience......plus you don't have to put up with any morons, who feel the need to skip rocks during a beautiful sunset. No names....(Rob Butters!). I like to be alone quite often, more so when I had my dog. I've done lots of sports like cycling, running, weights, xcountry ski, backpacking, and almost always alone. Get to keep my own pace, stop when I want, and so on. Only backcountry fly fishing with my dad, when he was alive, was a team sport. But to me, right now, after what I went through the last year and a half, solitude is a luxury for people with full lives. Anyway dude, that's my life right now. It'll get better or it'll end soon, but yours and a few other's videos (sorry, I cheat on you with other youtubers🙂) have helped me immensely, and just wanted you to know there are people out here that appreciate your stuff, probably more than you know. And thanks for responding when I write. You're a patient fellow to listen to me 🙂

Haven't watched them yet because they're both pretty long but they're saved to my watch list for a rainy day :)

Thanks HW! Likely a coaster but there's a chance it's a splake...tail wasn't very square.

@@LostLakes Let's call it a coaster! Splake are not nearly as fun. I really like the northern Superior coast, I am on the southern coast of Superior myself. Beautiful lake.

@@gener6538 Guess if it were cloder to southern ont . the meat fishermen would ruin it like they have so many places. Heck used to get lakers like that regular in Algonquin , now we have to settle with 1.5 lbers if we're lucky.

Wonderful, thanks again for the excellent videography, editing and tasteful music so beautifully placed. I appreciate the time you put into these vignettes. Your comment about needing solitude more than most sparked a though about Dr. Elaine Aron’s book, The Highly Sensitive Person, you might find it connects. She’s originally from Hamilton, On. .

Thank you so much Mike :) That's very funny that you mention that because another viewer very recently told me about it. Hadn't heard of it before. They believed that I fell into that category and after looking into it, I have to agree.

Awesome video, as usual. Enjoyed the nature sounds. I adore my wife, but she needs time alone in the house puttering around. Years she wished I would have somewhere to go, but I just wanted to be with her. When I found a little off grid place to rent…I loved that time alone! Seems I needed that time as well. Now, I go one weekend a month! But we differ in our choice of spirits. Bourbon for me. A four yr bourbon is like a 12 yr Scotch for smoothness. And a huge price drop! Speaking of which, time for a little pour. Find the movie “Neet on Netflix or Prime.

Thanks Tom! Hahah absence makes the heart grow fonder. It's healthy. I've probably never given bourbon a fair shake...I'll have to change that
