NC500 Travel Guide - Third Leg: Durness to Gairloch
Welcome back to my NC500 series! In this video, I take you on the third leg of our journey, travelling from Durness to Gairloch. Join me as we drive through the remote and rugged landscapes of the Highlands, navigating the single-track roads with numerous passing places. This video will give you a clear sense of what to expect on these roads, making your own trip easier and more enjoyable.
The North Coast 500 (NC500) is often dubbed Scotland’s answer to Route 66. Spanning over 500 miles of stunning coastal scenery, the route starts and ends in Inverness, winding its way through some of the most dramatic landscapes the UK has to offer. The journey from Durness to Gairloch takes you through the heart of this iconic route, where the scenery becomes even more breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
As you drive from Durness, you’ll experience a dramatic shift in the landscape. The bustling towns give way to the serene, rugged beauty of the Highlands. The route is characterized by its single-track roads, which meander through rolling hills, along cliff tops, and past secluded beaches. These roads offer a unique driving experience, with plenty of passing places to allow for smooth travel despite the narrow paths.
One of the main highlights of this leg is the Kylesku Bridge, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lochs. This section was my favourite part of the NC500, showcasing the raw beauty and tranquillity of the Highlands.
Towards the end of the video, you’ll witness my arrival at Sands Caravan and Camping Park, a fantastic campsite very close to the beach. This campsite is perfect for camping enthusiasts, with options to camp on top of the sand dunes and access to a massive sandy beach. At the end of the video, you can see the car setup I used for the trip, providing a glimpse into how I managed my accommodations on the road.
Despite the sunny weather captured in the video, it's important to be prepared for Scotland’s famously unpredictable weather.
