SCOTLAND'S Route 66 - Gimmick or Genuine Contender? Join me on a drive round the Kintyre Coast... 

It made me so home sick! Sitting in my office here in Drouin, Victoria Australia, all I can do is to visualise a happy childhood, which is long gone now. Talk about being "Transported". I wish I can go home now. 63 years has gone so soon. Alba gu Bragh!

I just saw this video a year later and it is such a beautiful video. My mum ( RIP) used to tell me that as a Wren she was based in Campbeltown during WW2. She learned that the war had ended at Machrihanish! I have always wanted to do that trip to remember her. So I really enjoyed this RU-vid! Thank you so much Steve!

I'm having a giggle here, because I have looked over to the Mull of Kintyre from Northern Ireland (Giants Causeway) and said "I can't believe that's Scotland " 🤣🤣 Glad you took us there, because no bloody way we'd be attempting that road! Thanks for another wonderful adventure.

Another great video. I remember when I was a little girl living in Northern Ireland my Dad pointing out Scotland to us from one of the beaches there. I was fascinated that another country could be so close lol.

Kintyre is a beautiful part of the world. As a whisky fan, I always go to Campbeltown. Did you notice the beautiful Victorian villas round about? A sign that in the 19th Century, Campbeltown was the richest burgh in Scotland. You can still see shells of closed distilleries that shut a hundred years ago -even Tesco is built on part of one. And of course a lot of us know that the greatest distillery of them all, Springbank is in the wee town. You parked outside the cinema which is the oldest in Scotland. We tend to stay in Tarbert is it’s a great place to do Islay from, go up to Oban and come in or go via Arran. When we go to Campbeltown we go down the east coast of Kintyre as the drive is so spectacular travelling south. You need a trip to Arran!

Steve, you’re so lucky having such beauty virtually on your doorstep. I have to travel several hours to visit those amazing places. I fell in love with Scotland when I finally visited The Highlands and a couple of Hebridean Islands, more visits planned to enjoy Scotland.

Thanks Steve for showing us another wonderful spot in Scotland. I'm not sure how people have the courage to drive some of those roads. Brent informed me while we were watching this, that Campbellton is New Brunswick, Canada (our home province) was named after Campbeltown in the Mull of Kintyre. Obviously NB spells it differently but this was something I did not know. Many settlers from Kintyre came to the northern NB area when they emigrated to Canada. I guess Brent has a few ancestors from Kintyre, (probably why he knows this, It's like living with Wikipedia! 🙄). We learn so much about the different areas of Scotland from your videos! Keep 'em coming!

I lived in Campbeltown for a few years, still returning when I can. (Last was just in June). The drive is fantastic but does it really need a label to attract people? I'm always wary when we create another "Route" as in some instances the roads are just not suitable. For those that wish to visit Kintyre, please do. I love sitting on Westport beach and watching the sun and looking out to Islay (another place I've lived), Jura, and Gigha. Btw Gigha is pronounced Gee'ah. ;)

Another great video, thanks for feeding my Scotland withdrawal symptoms. We stayed in Rothesay in September 2015 and took the Rhubodach - Colintaive ferry to the mainland, hardly turned the engine off before restarting it, such a short crossing. We drove north to pick up the A83 down through Inverary, a place we drove through many times and a welcome toilet stop, down to Campbeltown. After a coffee break very close to the place you ate at in your previous video we took the east coast road back to the A83 and Rothesay. As part of our dozen or so visits to Scotland over the last decade or so we did a lot of miles and saw some magnificent scenery. Checking the route for this post I didn’t realised how far we drove that day, so we almost did the route 66 before it was famous, as I did the North Coast 500 learning to drive in Scotland in 1969 before that was also famous. Living in Inverness I am blessed to live within so many places and roads to drive and explore, but it’s just so busy here with tourists such as the NC500 and to be honest Kintyre 66 (K66) actually looks like a dream to escape the crowds and explore an area of Scotland I know little about. Though I would take my time and take a good few days to properly explore and relax

I journeyed up on the night train to Fort William for a long weekend trip many years ago and hired a car to get me around the area. One of the surprises that struck me was how smooth and unblemished the roads were! It was a joy to drive around. I have Scottish and Irish blood in my DNA and love all things Celtic and Gaelic. Loving this roaming video and it's bringing back so many wonderful memories. Thank you ❤

We travelled that route over thirty years ago, I would agree the 'East' road is narrow twisty with passing places, not easy. No Gormley statue in those days, apparently it's at Saddell Bay near the castle. Many moons ago as a Custody Officer we used to go to the part time Sheriff Court in Campbeltown, a long way from the Central Belt in a four cell secure vehicle ! Years ago there was a ferry service to Ireland from Campbeltown, it didn't seem to last very long, perhaps not financially viable. Gigha island is pronounced Geeha and is well worth a visit to see Achamore Gardens and lovely beaches. The Kintyre Peninsula is beautiful, wether it'll become popular as 'a route', I would say probably doubtful. I wonder if the Dutch barge coffee and restaurant is still in Tarbet ? I love that there's hardly any other cars! I did this drive over 40 yrs ago... hasn't changed much!

We did the Kintyre Peninsula in 2018, and found it to be amazing. Sadly you missed the Springbank Distillery, fantastic tasting room, and tour! Also, there were some caves after Campbeltown, on the way to the Mull lighthouse. Good for you for hiking all the way down to the lighthouse- and I agree, the road is scary. We saw the Linda McCartney memory garden as well. I loved Skipness Castle when we visited, we were the only ones there, and the views were stunning. Tarbert was lovely, but we drove on up to Inveraray, and had a fantastic lunch at the George Hotel, then toured the Castle of the Duke of Argyll, at Inveraray. Your drive, views, and observations were spot on. I would do this drive again, absolutely.

That video is quite brilliant, next best thing to being there! I see the Mull of Kintyre very often but from Norn Iron and every time I see it I think exactly as you said ...can't believe that Scotland and a part of Scotland that I have never visited. Maybe some day!

I occasionally had to travel these roads back in the 80's when I was fixing the TV signal for these communities, and remember Tarbert and Campbeltown in particular. They don't appear to have changed much since then except perhaps more RV's on the roads now.

Many years ago we stopped campletown few motorcyclist ...but didnt really explore ...cheers steve for inspiration to do it proper i always watch you on tv with google maps on my phone ...👌👌👌👌

Thank you for a fantastic video. It brings back memories of our two week stay at a self-catering cottage in Achnashelloch in 2014. We did the same route then, only in clockwise direction. Glad to see that the 'End of public road' sign is replaced in the mean time. At the point we were there, it was all scratched up and witth stickers saying 'YES' or 'NO' for independent Scotland. I recommended the kintyre 66 to you a couple of months ago, so glad you done it! We married in Tayinloan, just up from the Gigha ferry 3 years ago. Glad you enjoyed it! The white building in Southend just past Columbus’ footprint was an old hotel (Khiel hotel) It’s been bought and sold a few times, has remained desolate for a number of years. Was popular with teenagers when I was in school. The building just down the hill from it was an all girls school for many years, it went on fire and has been empty ever since.

Since first setting foot on Scottish Soil in the early sixties it has never ceased to take my breath away….your trip down rout 66 is no exception, i believe the great creator of all things decided to make Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 a wee piece of heaven here on earth….and you always find the best of the best which is always spectacular, I also can’t believe how close you came to Ireland 🇮🇪 surely a good swimmer 🏊‍♀️ could do that crossing don’t you think! thanks 🙏 again Steve for the extra mile it was fabulous 🤗 as always your nose has detected the smell of bacon 🥓 and as always I have to go rooting around in the fridge! before I go for another re-run of rout 66. 👍🥀🤗

That was great Steve. Suffering again on our behalf. Early on I was thinking how good the roads were compared to the rest of the country. But you soon found some dodgy ones! That hill up from the lighthouse was pretty tough but the views were great and nice beaches. Classic that the Abbey stones were closed but its certainly a quiet part of the country. Loved skipness Castle, a great building - always like when you can climb up towers.

16:27 there was a foot passenger only ferry service from Campbeltown to Ballycastle run by Kintyre Express that has sadly ended this year due to wildly high fuel costs.

I had a week there earlier this year. Was too scared to go round the single track roads though. Gigha was a great day trip. Could have sat by the rocks on Westport Beach forever listening to the waves!

Just a quick additional - when at the trig point in Machrihanish, standing next to the Gauldrons, you have all the affore mentioned islands but also the top of Ireland in the distance.

My father was from Campbeltown and I still have an aunt who lives there. Thanks for the reminder of all the places I visited when we used to go up for a fortnight on our summer holidays (50/60 years ago) all the way from Bedfordshire when I was a young lad. When you were in Saddel are you sure it wasn’t the castle you were looking for, and the small beach there is I believe where the Campbeltown Pipe Band played whilst accompanying some Liverpudlian chap on a number one smash hit record…..his name escapes me for the moment……….Thanks again🤔😂👍

Great video again Steve & although not mega exciting there was still plenty of great wee things to visit.... Still my favourite drive was around Arran several years ago which is slightly shorter but with much much more to explore! The northern tip of Lochranza was my favourite with stunning walks & views & the best secluded cold water spring & pool to dive into 👍

We stayed in the little house by beach in Southend a couple of years ago. Swore we'd never drive over to the lighthouse again so I'm kind of pleased it wasn't just me being a wimp. Beautiful part of Scotland.

I really enjoyed this video Steve. When we lived near Locgilphead l was on Kintyre a lot..Painting and photographing. I love both coasts, both completely different. Saddell bay is very easy to miss, no signs. Its 9miles and about 20mins from Campbelltown. You come down a steep hill and see the bay away to youre right. As you come round a tight bend to the right, driving slowly you come to two stone gate posts and a lodgehouse with a parking area. A lovely old tree Avenue takes you to the Landmark Trust Castle. There you find the beach and the sculpture !! Thanks for the lovely trip......Alioban

I fell in love Scotland more than 20 years ago and it was this area I visited first for many many years. But the last time I was there is 10 years ago and I like to thank you for showing this area again. Brings back lots of good memories. I think the the crossing to Gigha is on the Sound of Jura and not the Atlantic but I could be mistaken. If you ever ( and I doubt you do) cone back to the Mull if Kintyre park the car and walk a couple of meters back. There a gravel track to some telephone/internet masts. From there you have a commanding view over Northern Ireland and the south of Scotland. By the way you had wonderful weather. Thanks again and if I could give some recommendations I would say Islay,Jura,Colonsay are definitely word a visit and St Kilda.

Aw Steve, your vid to Campbeltown was fab. My late husband and his uncle lived there for years. It was so good to "do the drive" again and has left me in a state but it was still great to see it again. Keep up the good work Steve. You nail it every time

Come on now Steve……. The Isle of Gee ga. It is pronounced ghee a. (Gigha). Gigha is very interesting as it had a falling population until the community bought out the island in early the 2000s. Now the island is thriving with more people living there. More tourist attractions and its own electricity supply.

I have visited Skipness & Castle years ago, probably 20 years at least. I don't remember anything like the building which you have made known to me; I think it was being refurbished when I visited. I'd crossed in a small ferry from Lochranza to Claonig (I think it was) & then walked along the shore to get there. I went to Campbeltown on the Waverly once. Well, thanks for opening up new horizons for me, Steve.

Again, one of your fascinating videos brings back recollections of my West Coast visits in the 1980's, with my Worth Valley Railway pals. We had a spare Sunday before joining VIC32 for a week's steaming around Loch Fyne, the Kyles, and the Firth of Clyde, and skipper Nick Walker suggested a drive down to visit Gigha. At that time it was still under private ownership, but has since been bought out and is now run by the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust. One thing I remember about our visit is that all the commercial enterprises, garage, shop, etc. were under the proprietorship of one rejoicing in the name of Mac Sporran! I believe that at one time the island was owned by the Horlick family of bedtime drink fame, and at that time Achamore Gardens on the island were planted with a large variety of exotic and sub tropical plants, which the Trust is working to restore. I too, was surprised to find that the land mass on the horizon to the South West was in fact Rathlin Island and the coast of Northern Ireland, as of course is also the case when you're on the Southern coast of Islay, but when you look back in history, the early Christians like Columba crossed this sea regularly in quite basic craft made out of wood and animal hides. I've not explored southwards to Campbeltown and the Mull on land so your video covered a whole new area for me (did you know there used to be a "light railway" between Campbeltown and Machrihanish?), but on one occasion when rising winds were forecast overnight, the skipper decided to change our sailing plan to anchor in Loch Ranza on Arran, and make a run for the more sheltered haven of Tarbet. From the wheelhouse of VIC32 under grey skies, the Eastern shore of Kintyre viewed from the Sound looked quite craggy and forbidding in places, and the course I was given to steer up into Loch Fyne kept us well offshore. Having spent a number of nights moored alongside the fishing wharf at Tarbet, I can assure you that the little town had its moments, back in the 1980's! Thank you once again, Steve, for posting this fascinating trip.

Great informative video...staying 3 days there next May before heading over to Islay...some great tips on what to see and what not to...won't be doing the walk down the hill to Mull of kintyre..even if there is mist rolling in from the sea

When the Iceland volcano was about to erupt I was finishing my holiday part one on the Vic32, I had arranged to finish at Tarbert ( start of 66 ). Had an expensive taxi to Campbeltown airport for plane to Glasgow and then Isle of Man for the next part on the Isle of Man. There's lots of interesting things to do a boat trip to a bird reserve and three Light houses in a row, a cat sanctuary, coastal paths with steep walks and lots more thats been keeping me coming back since 94. It was easy to spot the Giant's Causeway from just above the lighthouse. Thank you for showing that. Not so easy to work out what you're looking at, when looking from the other direction, which is where I live currently. Still, you can see Scotland most days from Northern Ireland and its a bonny sight ;) Thank you too, for paying your respects at the site of the Chinook disaster. I didn't know that that's where the cairn is. I won't go into detail about the crew and passengers lost. Suffice to say. They were the best of the best.

Was there not an old song that went something like - Campbelltown Loch I wish you were Whiskey ?

In 1971 I spent a week rough camping near Claonaig with a girl friend. We took the ferry to Islay, drove to Campbletown and Oban and did a few other trips. Glad to see that the area is more or less as then and not overrun with tourists. Also the single track roads on the eastern side of the peninsula still exist. Those roads are not scary, they just need driving slowly and let impatient drivers pass at the passing places. Rural Scotland is all the more rural for single track roads.

Stunning,tranquil and a place to gather your thoughts and soul. A place perfect for painters,romantics cyclists and country lovers. Lovely weather also.

Another mind blowing of the wonderful scenery you vlog up for us Steve. Beaches, towns, churchyards ...just so much. Best bit, but, was that you managed to avoid mentioning Pratley....

It must be 20 years since hubby and I were on holiday on the Kintyre peninsula: we stayed at Kilberry which is further northwest from the road you took, but stopped at Tarbert en route for a pub meal. We spent a day visiting Gigha - went round some gardens there. Watched the Lochranza ferry leave Claonaig when we were going back up the east coast, but missed Skipness Castle which looked amazing on your video - as did the lovely view of Tarbert at the end.

I visited this part of the world on a camping holiday a week after the Scottish Parliament opened and four years later I was working in Campbeltown for a very brief 2 year period. This brought back many memories of my time in that part of the world. Thanks

The Art deco building at Southend is the former Keil Hotel. Built in the 1930's was accomodeard during WWII for a Royal Naval Hospital. Returning to civilian use as a hotel after the war and continued as that into late 1980's when the then owners became bankrupt. Sadly thereafter falling into disrepair. Dunaverty is the name of the rock and my Clan the Macdonald's used to have a castle on it.

Thanks Steve, that brought back happy memories of a 1968 summer family holiday in Bellochantuy. A caravan on the beech and a sea kayak...perfect.

I've spent many holidays in Otter Ferry and been over to Tarbet for lunch on the ferry several times. We've never gone any further south unfortunately. We tended to drive up and round, via Inveraray, to get home. That castle in Skipness is wonderful!

Many years ago, in the early 2000s we did the Kintyre Peninsula and drove up there from Devon. We rented a cottage just outside Campbelltown which was on the beach. Open the back gate and there was the beach, perfect for our two dogs. However nearly every day there were sheep on the beach so our dogs rarely got to run loose on there in the 10 days we were staying. It is a lovely part of the world, but of course this was before the new route. the beaches were great and our dogs loved them for sure. We drove as far as the car park above the lighthouse at the Mull of Kintyre but we didn't walk all the way down to the lighthouse. It seemed a hell of a long way. We spent some time in Tarbert too. We didn't mind the narrow roads etc because we were living in Devon and were used to single track country lanes with not many passing spots!

On the East coat you could have stopped half way to Saddell, there's a fairly complete iron age living structure, some steps and ramparts still available to walk on. Kildonan Dun. Maybe next time. Fantastic Steve. Mull of Kintyre is where I used to love exploring in the 70's the drive down the A83 was spectacular in those days before the road was straightend out. Love seeing the Gigha ferry again and the villages down to Machrihanish (where I played Golf) Brought back lovely memories for me.
