Scotland had some very talented players, but they were always too predictable. The attack was much too aerial which meant they relied too heavily on a # 9. When that didn’t work they didn’t have a plan B. England used to play much the same way.
Yup, it's Iceland, Greenland & any other place smaller than Scotland that kicks us in the bollocks. These qualifying groups now go on for ever & I just lose interest by time finals arrive.
So, that time Chile did not make it to that cup. Peru did instead. I was heart broken, but when I saw Scotland vs Peru I cheered for the Scots. Well, they lost. But what a team they were. I was a small kid then. I thought of how athletic those players were. Peru ended up selling themselves up to Argentina for $$$ so they could reach the finals and leave Brasil out. It was a corrupt tournament anyway
Peru were a central American team & not too be taken lightly, but the players did & got stuffed & it went from bad to worse, but hey England didn't get to both the 74 & 78 WCs so stick that into the English roast beef.
Scotland also knocked Czechoslovakia out of the 1974 World Cup at the qualifying stage. In between Czechoslovakia won the European Championship beating West Germany in the final on penalties (I think that might have been the first major trophy decided that way).
I'm English, but that Scotland kit is iconic....Umbro diamonds everywhere Even AC/DC wore the shirts back in the day..... And as for the Welsh kit....another classic.....Remember the Coventry City brown away kit ???
I painted a subuteo team in a rainbow Wales/ Coventry strip. They were the international Multiracial Allstars; painted coloured players. My A team! P.s it’s fine being English, ya bawbag!
Wales kit was beautiful as was the Scotland one. Wanted a Scotland shirt in Stirling but only had the white away shirt! Admiral kits were gorgeous though.
The goal by Dalglish against Wales makes for a really interesting pub quiz question - Who scored for the away team on his home ground yet it was not an own goal? Although it was a home game for Wales, it was switched to Anfield from Ninian Park in Cardiff because of previous crowd disorder involving Wales supporters. Anfield was Dalglish’s home ground at the time since he was playing for Liverpool however in this game he was playing for the away team - Scotland. 🙂
I remember watching the Wales vs Scotland game- very critical game. The penalty was pretty controversial- I believe Big Joe touched the ball.. a Maradona special… anyway a tough game. Wales has a strong squad: Flynn, Toshack, Yorath, Jones etc no easy side w a very memorable jersey-classic! The Czechs were a formidable side w/great pedigree, which they still have today! Big thanks on the channel!!
Great team we had but the team didn't fulfill their potential . We didn't do our homework on Peru or prepare properly for that match and the rest is history.
How Scotland could do with players like this today! I remember they qualified for five,YES FIVE World cups in a row.1974,1978,1982,1986 and 1990.It’s just my opinion, but Bill Shankly should have got the Scotland job when Willie Ormand went.Shanks had left Liverpool unexpectedly in 74, and was at a loose end for ages.Imagine him taking Scotland to the World Cup in Argentina in 1978 instead of the indecisive Ally McLeod. How McLeod left out Andy Gray for instance who’d been voted PFA Young player and players player of the year in 1977,was baffling, especially when you think the most successful team in the First Division then was Liverpool, who won the League and European Cup,with Man Utd winning the FA Cup,while Gray’s team,Aston Villa, finished fourth and won the League cup.Shankly would have taken him no doubt about that.
A very good team with a mediocre manager, an absolutely rubbish GK and players who believed their own hype.....who should have easily gone through the group stages.
Truly a brilliant Scotland team but Scottish FA comitted suicide by stupidly and unfairly banning influential Captain, Billy Bremner for life in 1976 for a silly scuffle in a bar! Scotland's hope got buried by that unforgivable, suicidal decision. The Scots sorely missed Bremner's inspiration, influence, and leadership in the World Cup. To make matters worse, the FA appointed Ally Macload who messed up the team selections, leaving out key players, Tommy Hutchinson, Peter Lorimer, Jimmy Jonston. Jock Stein should have been the team manager for the World Cup.
@@iananderson3799 Maybe Jonston but Hutchinson & Bremner were indispensable and were still in good form. Graham Souness was brought in only for the third match against Holland which Scotland won 3-2 with Archie Gemill's memorable goal! Ally MacLeod wasted all those super talents. Jock Stein should have been the manager!
@@iananderson3799 No, Jock never went to Leeds. Don Revie was replaced by that obnoxious arrogant Leeds hater, Brian Clough and all hell broke loose at Leeds. He lasted only 40 days than sacked!
This is what World Cup qualifying should be like today, smaller groups where every game matters, no games against minnows like Gibraltar or San Marino.
Totally agree - I was devastated in '78 but looking at the qualifiers the signs were there. I thought here that Dalglish and Rioch looked the part but very workmanlike otherwise
If we'd actually been able to field that team in Argentina, we'd have been in contention for a medal. As it was, only one of the back four was able to start in the opening match against Peru and we had a makeshift defence.
Scotland were genuinely fancied in Argentina, priced at 8/1 by the bookies. They had the squad to do well there, but probably peaked a year early. Also didn't help that the manager messed up big time, not giving enough respect to their opponents and only playing his best team when it was too late.
@@sachsgs2509 You must be a baby because Scotland were 6/1 to win the 1978 world cup fact...never been so high and I watched a world class team who have never been bettered and just fell short ....
If i was welsh id have been pissed off as well but in the heat of the moment with so much at stake did you expect them to admit to the ref who had handled the ball? There are plenty if examples of teams/players getting away with wrong decisions. Ultimately its on the refs and linesmen to notice.
@@daveratcliffe1016 Nothing wrong with Lou, Andy Gray yes - Derek Parlane!!!! - a good player at club level. More to the point, why didn't Derek Johnstone start after 41 goals that season?
What an incredible amount of world class players we had back then! I'd almost forgotten. If we had one or two of their like now we'd be pretty damn good!
How the fuck did Scotland get a penalty. Seriously like Scotland, but would of bottled Jordan that night .. Wales done twice ..thank fuck wasnt against Emgland . Be hand of God again 😊
Scotland have had some of the best world class players ever but they never seem to do well as a team I remember I think it was 1974 they were favourites to win the world Cup on paper the best squad ever and they didnt get past the group stages one day they will come good again
Just 4 games to get to the world cup, and no need to play Andorra, San Marino or Gibraltar. Damn shame they came up against the superpowers if iran and Peru.......
Great watch, great action particularly Scotland win v the Czechoslovakia. First time I’ve ever seen the game at Anfield with BBC Wales commentator Idwal Robling’s voice; usually seen it with the Scottish commentators. He was right about the first goal - it should never have been a penalty.
@@iananderson3799 that was because they never built the team around him. Unfortunately, Scotland played the long ball game to the head of Jordan rather than to the feet of Dalglish.
@@MarkHewitt In his autobiography, Kenny admitted he was poor for Scotland because he was always too scared to try anything special in case it never came off. That being said, I was at Hampden to see his goal against Spain in 1984...and that was pretty special.
@@iananderson3799 That is Kenny being Kenny. But you have to admit if the first target is Jordan's head then you need a nippy striker to fight for the second ball. Dalglish was swift of thought not swift of feet. England managers have done the same many times. So have Scotland (I.e. Jim Baxter).
@@wonjubhoy He’s the SON of a Scottish born mother & father so that in my opinion makes him very Scottish. He just entered the world when away from his homeland.
Willy Jonston was unfairly sacked after Match against Peru for too much "caffeine" in blood!! Just Outrageous!! Absolutely insane !! This unsettled the team. But players like Hutchinson, Lou Macari, Souness should have been brought in. Ally MacLeod selection played without imagination against Iran drawing 1-1. They had to win their next match against Holland by 3-0 or bust! With Souness in, they played their best football and beat Holland 3-2 but couldn't make round two. Sadly Scotland went home because of the coach's blunders! So many talented players just wasted away !!
@@tomellis4324 macari never performed in a Scotland shirt, not in the same class as Kenny Dalglish,Derek Parlane,Derek johnstone both of whom should have played,Mcleod did,nt seem to like Rangers players.
@santhanaraj5863 Macari played against Peru (and he was shite.) His major contribution was ducking out of the wall when Peru scored directly from a free-kick.
Better than England in 74 & 78! It was good while it lasted & Ally gave us hope. We are a small nation of 5 million but produced so many great players that English teams needed to win anything. The players were at fault not Ally. He was a good man & overall a good manager. Should have took Alex Ferguson with him.
It did look like it might have been Jordan...but not one complaint from the Welsh guys...and there are stills that seem to show that it wasn't Jordan that handled the ball...only saying
I was at that game at anfield.supporting Wales The ground was 98% full of Scots. Scotland had every part of the stadium. Wales fans were in the kop with Scotland fans. A handful of police spent all the game trying to keep the fans apart. There was fighting throughout the game in the kop. It was terrifying. There was a nasty atmosphere throughout the game in the kop. When Scotland scored we decided to leave the ground while the jocks were celebrating, only to be chased outside by scousers chanting Merseyside la, la, la. In 49 years supporting Cardiff city and Wales, i have never been that scared for my safety. And iv been to west ham, Millwall Leeds, Chelsea, spurs, man u and more.all in the 70s. Nothing comes close to that night in the kop.
Poor Ally MacLeod. Felt sorry for him as he buried his head into his hands. Classic shot of him. He did get us there & the players didn't perform until last match. So let's not be too hard on him. A nice guy & a fair manager all round.
Yes he was a nice guy and a gentleman but his arrogance in not watching the group opponents especially Iran and Peru before the tournament was his downfall
Remarkable how Scottish the Celtic players were back then, the Billy’s, Jimmy’s, Danny’s, and so on on. It seems good Scottish Catholics back then were proud to be Scottish, and didn’t name their children the likes of Aiden and other pseudo-Irish names. You can tell be their qualities as men, as well, compared to their cretins today. Rangers fan here, as you may have guessed.
Our biggest failure was Alan Rough as I was wondering why Peter Latchford or McCloy weren't in net as both were used to the big stage in Scotland, Rough was shit as when he got thoroughly tested he bottled it.
Rough was not up to international standards but I will defend him as he was a part time-keeper and McLeod knew this, and in the game against Peru he actually saved Scotland from a bigger defeat.
1974 WC we didn't lose a match in the group stage & still came home early. Just can't make it up with the Scotland team. It's always a glorious disaster in the end but we love 'em.
Scotland were robbed of blatant penalty awards in these highlights then given a penalty for Joe Jordan's handball in the Wales box! It might be karma but refereeing in 1978 suuuuuucked.
Too reliant on an aerial attack when all the best teams were playing at ground level. The British style of play didn’t really change until more international players came into the Div 1 and eventually EPL.
We were lucky to have Brian Clough at Forest. He was a great believer in playing football on the ground. I think three of the Scottish squad were Forest players. Archie Gemmil, Kenny Burns, John Robertson. Robbo was an amazing player.
Please, someone, help me with my decades of uncertainty... back in these days I could only see these matches in black-and-white on tv - and in color magazines sometimes it seemed the Scottish team wore black jerseys and sometimes the same jerseyes seemed a very dark blue. I could never be sure... the Scottish team never in fact wore black jerseys, right?
If only Jock Stein or Alex Ferguson was in charge at Argentina 78! 🇦🇷 With that squad Scotland would have had a real chance rather than what happened under Ally MacLeod 😳
There was a trivia question doing the rounds at the time ,what player signed for Liverpool but made his debut at Anfield for the away team, apparently it was Dalglish but not sure it’s true or not….🤔
I was actually worried that they could win the world cup with that team, great midfield. When they did their lap of honor at Hampden before leaving I was full of dread. No need to worry first plane home as usual, karma for the lap of honor!
@polaris7122 The so-called "lap of honour" at Hampden was on the advice of the Strathclyde Police who were worried that Glasgow Airport wouldn't be able to function if thousands of supporters turned to see the squad fly out. It was therefore decided to open Hampden beforehand so that the fans could give the team a send-off before they went to the airport.
Easy to see why Scotland were seen as one of the favourites in Argentina after topping a tough group containing Czechoslovakia (the European champions) and Wales, who had reached the last eight of that 1976 tournament won by Czechoslovakia. Both teams would have been sick of the sight of Joe Jordan at the end!
If anyone had bothered to think about it, Scotland's position as one of the favourites was based on turning over Czechoslovakia (who were not the team of the previous year), in the autumn at Hampden Park. There's a big difference between that and taking on the world's top teams in South America 9 months later.
Very true. They had a GOOD side not great and were handicapped by key players being injured and off the boil/past it by the summer and a manager who was out of his depth. He picked his old mates from Aberdeen - Bobby Clark and Joe Harper - PLEASE.
You had the players to have lifted 😆 the 78 WC , top midfielders coming out of Alleys arse , Dalglish Jordan Joe almost always turned up on the Big Occasions , maybe the Defeat to us knocked the stuffing out of your Boys , strange you had it All going for use , I think Bonnie Scotland got caught in the headlights - Pity Really as at that time you had us English behind use as well .
