On my first trip to Scotland, crossing the Borders, I heard someone speaking and thought, "OMG. I'll never understand this." But of course, the good Scotsman heard my American English and instantly snapped into a more understandable form of his native tongue. Lovely country and people! Really missing traveling! Ugh!

As an American English speaker he’s comfortable listening to various forms of the Scots language a lot of the words sound like onomatopoeia and I spoke to the convention I can imagine that for people speaking standard English this is why the Scots language sounds primitive and childish it’s invoking an expectation that the words are trying to represent sounds in nature

"wir" is the uneumphatic form of 'our'... We'r< is fine in scots, no need for that dialect spelling there. "wir/wor/wur" (our)...oor. @@miamha

@@stonedape2406 Well, I don't understand Scots but as a Dane, from Jutland, with a knowlegde of English, I'm able to read some of it. "Richt" is for exampel "right" in jutish dialects and "efter" is "after" in standard danish, but I found out that there are lots of words within the diffrent dialects of Scots that are almoste the same, some are the same, as in standard danish and dialects of danish. As an example alle the Scots words with dobbel "o" sounds very much alike Danish when pronunced, we just use an "u" : Moos/Mus, Loos/Lus, Hoos/Hus, oot/ud, Broon/Brun and so on.
@stonedape2406
@stonedape2406 3 года назад
@@ole7146 yeah, scots kept some older features that were lost in it's sister language of English, including not going through or not going through the same way the great vowel shift. That is why as you said, some vowel sounds like 'oo' for u are kept, among other things. I can see many parallels through Norwegian, which I'm currently learning.

Eejit means idiot in Scottish and Irish language
@innesmacneil
@innesmacneil 4 года назад
no it doesn’t in gàidhlig (scottish gaelic) idiot is amadan (m), òinseach (f), gloic (p), eejit is scots
@kingofcelts
@kingofcelts 4 года назад
@@innesmacneil You're right, it's not Irish either. Amadán is the main one I heard when I was young and it was used in rural Dublin. Ludar or a word to that effect was another of my Aunt's favourites. Those words that peppered the English language are long forgotten where I live now. Óinseach is in the dictionary, but I don't know of it's usage much...
